Not sure if there is a thread about this or what it relates to... but every time i turn my fan on i get this weird stale smell that will only go away when i turn the ac on. the smell happens with vents opened and closed. anyone experience this before? or know what it is?

Possibly your ducts are crudded up from running the system on "closed".
I would set the dial to "open" turn the blower on 2 and run it a few days.

Mine smells, too from time to time. I just saw that thread yesterday and plan to check my cabin air filter. If that's not the issue then I probably won't continue to troubleshoot as it doesn't really bother me much.

Check the vent system drain. it's likely plugged causing moisture to sit in the system and mold to grow. Also spraying some Fabreze (auto version) into the cowel air inlet while running the fan full speed, with the vent set to outside air, is said to kill the stench. I really my try it. Mine was stinky today and has been periodically for several years.

Mine started smelling late last summer after using the A/C on recirculate instead of running it on fresh air. I checked my drain hose and my problem isn't that, so I sprayed some Lysol down the intake screen.
My car didn't come with a cabin air filter, so I installed one 2 days ago - that makes a big difference too. Not hard to do, although I learned it's best to remove the items from the glovebox before undoing it. The entire thing fell off onto my feet and it was hard to put back the right way.
Happened on my old car. Just mold in the ac system. Lysol is a temporary cure, there is product (forgot the name) that you spray via a long tube. it forms a protective coating on the evaporator that prevents mold. Pretty good reviews.
Also, I try to turn the ac off a few minutes before shutting the car off to let it dry.
PS Jyst remembered, the name is Einszett Klima-Cleaner.

Thank you OP and Yury. Just in time.
A reviewer in amazon stated that he fed the cleaner tube into the drain plug. Basically a bottom-up approach, instead of the manufacturer instruction of top-bottom (vent down to evaporator) aproach. Comments?
How bout sloshing water sound upon initial start/drive? Solutions?
Sorry. didn't mean to hi-jack.
blocked weeping holes at the bottom of a door? whenever my car sits for a few days (which is often) and I open/close a door, a bit of water sips through the hole.

Are you sure it is a sloshing sound? Where do you hear it coming from? Apparently, the ABS system activates the solenoids to check them when you first start off when you hit about 4MPH. I thought it was something sloshing around too until I read about the ABS system's self daignostics.

Patiently cycled and Lysol-ed all vents from blower, installed a CAF & changed my a/c usage habits.
Gone is the smell so far...
Had to see how the Lysol holds up since I had it handy.

Ahh,, glad to hear that it's normal.
Got a link with a good read about this please and thank you.
UPDATE:
Just over a month: Lysol is gone, back is the smell.
