My drivers side front suspension started knocking today. It doesn't knock over bumps really and only knocks when I'm coasting, not when I have my foot on the accelerator. I can feel the knocking slightly in the steering wheel. I looked down there and there's some tarry black crap splattered around my wheel behind the brake. Any ideas?

Did you take the tire off and check for a torn rubber Cv joint boot? Engine mounts?
Dunno, but it sounds BAD and unsafe...

Just as I thought. That knocking means their's something majorly damaged or loose. The car was lowered?

Well, turns out the horrible knocking was from 2 of the lug nuts backing out. The wheel was vibrating all over the place. The 3rd backed out 1/2 way and luckily #4 was on snug. That could have got real sketchy, still gonna take it in to check out the gunky business... No idea how those little bastards came loose.

There is a giant hole in your cv boot...just in case you missed that.

Ha, yes, I do see.

Thats not where the knocking came from, though, it was the lugs.

But I'm going to probably just have to do a whole new axle assembly, thats usually the easiest / cheapest way, isn't it? (or so I hear)

Damn that could have ended bad. But yea I was gonna say something chewed into your cv boot.

Check the rim, wheel studs and lug nuts for damage. Also, who was last to remove those wheels? Hoping it wasn't sabatoge....

ha, it was me. It all lies on my shoulders. I don't know what happened, they have been on tight for a good 2 months and all of the sudden they backed out, idk. The existing lug nuts look fine as well as the studs. The rim looks okay too. I can see if I just didn't tighten one right but don't you think they would have come off in less than 2 months time? Weird shit.

Do your rims sit firmly on the hub, or is there play? If there's play you can easily
torque the rim off center and it will eventually work itself loose. You should be tightening your lug nuts while the tires are still off the ground. When you feel their as tight as you can get them by hand(because the wheel will eventually turn) give the tire a couple good kicks and make sure it doesn't settle in anymore.

Then drop the car until there's just enough weight on the tires to keep them from spinning while you torque them down... then drop them all the way and recheck torque one last time.

Hub centric rings will help if they are applicable.

Honestly, I think it was either somebody trying to steal my rims (I don't live in the greatest neighborhood) and got scared off by my dog... or I was just lazy and careless when I switched them out, most likely it was my laziness. It was a good wakeup call, though! haha.
