wondering if removing the factory built in air filter on the top of air box will help my milage or possibly hurt the engine?

Slight improvement to f/e.

However, that upper filter is a CARB requirement. Being in Cali, I'm not sure you'd pass inspection with it removed. From what I understand, inspection is a pretty anal issue down there.

Do you mean the filter that is behind the passenger side bottom glove box?

No. In the air intake there are two filters. A white fiber filter that sits on the lower portion of the air box, and a permanently affixed black charcoal filter attached to the upper part. He is talking about the charcoal filter.

So if you remove the carbon filter you get better mileage?

yes the black carbon filter, its looks like its quite air restrictive.
iam wondering how the smog police would know i removed it and if the engine would still run properly?

I'm guessing it's just to hold in fuel vapors after the engine shuts down. Mabye without it there would be a gas smell....

I pulled mine out of my Xa, big improvement in flow. Very noticable at the top of the rpm range. I broke it pulling it, you can dremel it out carefully and be able to put it back. It blocks noise as well, so now there is more of a growl out of the front. No gas fumes noticed. Not sure on MPG. I know it did not go down.

The Obama EPA will crucify you for that. You have admitted publicly to defiling a clean air system. You will be punished for your sin!
