What is the diff between Injen and k&n systems besides price? Looking at both and nothing pops out.

Pretty much the same other than the name. You would never tell the difference between the two as far as power/sound is concerned. Also the filter material may be slightly different and some will come with a hydroshield or things like that.

Really I would recommend you pick up which ever you get a better price for. I prefer injen and have used them on all my previous cars.

Are you comparing cold air to cold air. Make sure youre not comparing the short ram K&N.

I love the K&N brand, but I have both in stock and I can't give a compelling reason to pay more for it.

short ram just means it sits in the engine bay instead of down by the wheel. Hotter air than a cold air

Anyway, I think this will be my first mod on a car since I was 18. I am now 50! Is there a way to get the intake in the grill area to get air that is moving fast already--thus actually colder? Or are there just too many bugs?

The air will be considerably colder towards the bottom of the bumper but I live in FL and I will gaurentee that during the summer no matter what intake you have, you will get heat soak. Another thing to consider is your ride height. We live in an extremely wet climate and if you are as low as I am you are going to want to be extremely careful going through puddles so you dont hydrolock.

The short ram like afe has is going to come with a heat shield so it kinda helps block out the hot engine air and take only air from right behind the grill. Not sure how good it works. I also have hood spacers which I am hoping allow some of that hot engine bay air out and away from my intake but I don't have any real world data to see if it actually works either. If you have a LB which it looks like you do, you may want to condsider the simota intake I would have gotten it if it fit sedans. It sits right behind the grill and is a closed box with an opening only towards the grill.

It makes it a LOT easier to service the filter for one thing. Both come with a filter, so you won't get bugged by either.

Cold air is cooler looking (shiny pipe and all) and under some conditions, pulls colder air and therefore makes a little more power. SRI is more convenient and with a heat shield provided, provides some protection from engine bay heat build up.

With a SRI, and some craftsmanship, you can make your own hood scoop-to-heatshield air intake. Way cooler, more effective than both a SRI or a CAI.
