CHICAGO – Saturn announced the addition of the all-new 2008 Astra to its lineup, bringing a decidedly European flavor to the North American compact car market. It is packed with a wide range of standard equipment and safety features, and delivers sporty performance with very good fuel economy.
The Saturn Astra will be offered in three-door and five-door models, each underpinned by a taught, European-bred suspension that delivers a sharp, responsive driving experience. Power comes from a 1.8L Ecotec four-cylinder engine that is both energetic and economical, delivering 140 horsepower (104 kW) and up to 34 mpg** on the highway.

Fall of 2007, as a 2008 model.
I attended the intro, and have posted a couple of blog entries on the car, the most recent today:

To compete with Mazda and VW, I think a stronger engine needs to be available at launch. Of course, to Yaris owners the 140-horsepower engine probably sounds powerful.

Typical GM... decent exterior (I'd call that more than decent, its pretty sexy), over-par amenities, but that interior... holy fucking ugly.
They should try using two colors.

Yup, cool car outside, 20 year old dinosaur inside. I still might consider one.
Shouldn't this be in the Off-Topic/Other section with all the other cars?

Sorry to be the opnly negative person about this one here but I don't like it at all ... interior and especially exterior.
Does this even meet our catagory class of Sub Compact? Looks bigger.
Nice car. Reminds be of my old 98 Civic Hatch without all the bling-bling. All the chrome finish is questionable and the gazillion of knobs and buttons in the interior seem a little overwhelming.
The nose seems to stick-out too much and the front bumper doesn't help.

Meh, the exterior isn't too bad, but that interior is awful. WTF is that 80's computer looking thing in the middle?

Just for the Record it is the same Exact car as the Opel/Vauxhall Astra

It's a bit more wagonny than I prefer, but it's not bad looking at all. I think I'd still buy a Mazda3 5-door before that, but it's nice to see another entry into the market.

Whats with Irmscher's name being on a fucking Saturn anyway? Its a far cry from a Speedster... I don't care who owns Opel.

Its a re-badged Opel Astra. It's Euro inside-out. It's also got a diesel version and a turbo-charged 2-door version. The turbo is great on straight lines but horrible on curves because of its massive understeer.

I like it. I guess cause its a funky hatchback-in a good way (not that the Yaris isn't). I like the 3-door better than the 5-door. I agree with some of you guys, the outside is nice but the inside:barf:
Kudos to GM for making Saturn more "upscale," from my understaning most of the product line up is a rebadged or modified Opel, which is good and bad. I guess that's why GM is able to re-do Saturn into a more credible brand so quickly with all these new models coming out, cause their basing it on existing models. I think the new VUE looks good, even if its based and re-badged from their other brands, I don't care for SUV's. I do like the Saturn Sky:wub: :headbang: That thing is sexy! I don't care too much for the Pontiac version. that's my rave/rant.

At the end of the day, its still a..... Saturn. We just got rid of an 02 Saturn L200 and replaced it with an 06 Mazda 3. My mother had an 02 L300 that she purchased at the same time. It was just totalled a couple of months ago, and replaced with an 07 Camry. I hope that anyone who purchases a Saturn has alot of free time, because you are going to need it. You will be spending alot of time at the dealership trying to get things fixed. Atleast for the first couple of years anyway. After that, you just give up.
Maybe this will give you an idea of how bad it was. We had so many problems, I told my other half to cal Saturn and ask them to extend the warranty due to the number of problems that we had. I was looked at like I was crazy. The next day, after a call to Saturn, the warranty was extended with no questions asked. However, there was a price. We had to sign paperwork stating that we would not sue, or seek any damages in exchange.

Opel's reliability is questionable. My wife's co-worker has the new Holden Vectra (a re-badged Opel Vectra). She says it spends more time at the dealerships for servicing one fault or another than it does on their garage. I told her maybe you should've bought a Camry instead.

I know we are talkin about this Saturn being a rebadged Opal, but most of GM is just a rebadged something or other, for example; Pontiac Vibe, Chevy Aveo, Pontiac GTO, most of there mid sized truck and suv's are Isuzu, I forget what else, but I know there is a lot more

finally a BMW I would buy :)
The astra is HOT it seriously makes me wonder how far I want to go with the yaris... I need maybe 1 foot more length with the seats down... the yaris is "perfectly" sized, but it would be nice to carry things that are 48" long and not ride up on the steering wheel.
Wont happen until late 08 maybe 09 though... gotta make a dent in these payments lol.
