View Full Version : Resetting Service Required Light
I change my own oil but the damned service required light came on and really did not want to take my Yaris to the dealer to get the light reset so I tried a few things, this is what I think I did to get it off.
1. Turn the ignition all the way on.
2. Turn the ignition off.
3. Press in and hold the trip meter reset button.
4. Turn the ignition all the way on. I noticed the service button blinking
5. After about five seconds, turn the ignition off. Then release the trip meter reset button
6. Turn the ignition all the way on. The service light comes on and then goes off after a few seconds.
If someone else has one of these lights on, give it a try and see if I remember correctly.
I forgot to say release the trip meter reset button between 5 & 6.

Also found in your owners manual, and in about 10 posts from the past fro here.
Nice bump though, this topic on reseting after an oil change should become a sticky.

The odometer has to be in the "Trip A" setting first.

I took my car to the dealership and watched them reset it.
1. With the odometer on trip A and the ignition off, press and hold the reset button.
2. Turn the ignition on (no need to start the car) and wait for it to start blinking. It will count down and when it's done, it'll be reset.

Is that the same spot as the aux input for Ipod?

If your car is ever locked out of gear, it allows you to move the shifter in and out of gears so it can be driven to the dealer.

Buried on page 121 of the handy manual.....
ref: 2007 Yaris hatchback from Jan '06 Prod (OM52700U), page 121, item (m):
"
.....
The system must be reset after the engine oil replacement. Reset the system by the following procedure:
1. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position with the trip A reading shown.
2. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position while holding down the trip meter reset knob.
Hold down the knob for at leat 5 seconds. The indication light flashes and the bars displayed in the odometer disappear gradually. The odometer indicates "000000" and the light goes off.
If the system fails to reaset, the light will continue flashing. "
Well these instructions seem reasonable. Toyota isn't telling us the mileage interval (probably 5000 miles) and it probably can be reset anytime, and the light will turnon when 5000 miles has elapsed.

I tried it this morning. I set the ODO on trip A and turn the ignition key to OFF i held the Trip Meter button and turned the ingition key on. The light blinked faster than normal and the Odometer read - - - - - after about 5 seconds the light disappered

Its preset into the computer. You just changed it before it came on. At least when it does come on, you will already know the reset.

This trick just saved me a bunch of annoyance--for a different issue. I've had my hatch for 2 weeks. Today I was on a round of trips, and on one re-start, the Power Steering light came on, just as I noticed there was no Power Steering. I just tried this re-set, and it worked--and now I have Power Steering again.

well...last night after i finished the oil change, i forgot to reset it.
and then..since i was too tired i went straight to bed.
just now my wife called saying that service light is now on...
hehehe...now i'm screwed.
i promise her last night that i will take care of it.
oh well...
I just got mine done last week and I asked to make sure they reset that thing! Also, mine came on about 200 miles before 5000!! It scared me so I took it in and got it serviced and the tires rotated! :)

I bought my Yaris in December and have 12,000 miles on it already. I just changed the oil at 11,000 and the light started coming on and now is on all the time.
Is that happening so they can change my oil for $30 a crack?

^ you have a check engine light, not the maintenance light. take it to the dealer.
Does any one happen to know if this erases the mileage on Trip A when this is done? I'm just curious because I always track my my miles per tank on the trip meter and am afraid I'll lose the info. I should probably get in the habit of logging it elsewhere anyway just in case.
TIA

The odometer has to be in the "Trip A" setting first.
was gonna say he had left one thing to do which should have been int he beginning.... i did that to mine then ignition off, press and hold trip button, ignition on and wait till it count downs and you set. It was quicker thhan i thought. Oh yeah i had to do that since i can save more money getting the oil from my brothers store (advance auto) and get his discount to get castrol syntec 5w30 rather than paying 40 bucks to Toyota dealer umph!

Is there a way to change the interval at which the light comes on at? Just hit 5000 in my car yesterday. Once I switch to synthetic, I was gonna also switch the interval to 7500 miles instead of every 5000. Having to constantly reset that light is going to become annoying! Or what about disabling the light? I know how to track my maintenances anyway (always have).

1. Theres is no way to change the 5000 mile mark. 2. You could pull your gauges and cut the power to the light. 3. Have a Yaris imported from a non-US market.

Every 5000 miles is "constantly"? I wouldn't be annoyed by that, but to each his own.

When I drive as much as I do (I hit 5000 in less than 2 months easily) it does seem like constantly. More to the point is the resetting when it is inconsistent with when the maintenance actually occurs.

Yeah, that kind of sucks. But it's only like a 3 minute fix at the most. You spent that much time asking if you could change the interval.
Just saying :iono:

1. press odo/trip till you get trip a
2. hold trip a while turning ignition to on position, don't start engine.
3. trip a will switch to blinking lines and the maint light will also blink. when it goes away and the trip meter flashes, you are done.
