I just purchased a Drop-in K&N filter and was wondering if there would be a benefit to taking the intake tube (elephant trunk haha) off the box? The open nozzel would be pointed toward the ground and I would cover the hole with some screen just to keep the big stuff out.

I did finally find the thread where some guys did that. Its just temporary until i can continue my Quest of mod-o-rama and purchase an SRI.

Did you notice any difference in sound/power? Did you put a screen on it like you mentioned? Does the MAF just hang in the engine bay?

Looks like the wrong move to me... Now the opening is directly behind the hot radiator. It would be fun to plug in a scanner and look at the AIT with both setups.

I did a similar thing.

I removed the charcoal filter in my intake and replaced my OEM intake filter with a K&N one.
Now I can hear the air being sucked in, not sure about power increases.

I dont really feel any power gains but I think the engine may be and little louder. I did add a pulley and put a tanabe touring exhaust on it which ive noticed a little more umph. I chose not to put a screen on it but just to keep a wachful eye on it cause it already has the filter protecting it. There is nothing connected to the tube i took off and figured sense hot air rises it wouldn"t hurt just to try something different until I can get a SRI.

Is it okay for the MAF to just hang in the engine bay like that?

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see anything hanging loose in the pics.

I cut my intake tube back to where it's a larger diameter and put a velocity stack on it...

The picture with his MAF...it just looks like it's hanging there. I don't see where it's secured??

But how do you like your intake like that, tooter? I don't know if I would want to commit to actually cutting it, haha. Good sound? I assume you're running a dorp-in filter with that setup? Where did you get the velo stack? (I know, too many questions!)

when i first recieved my k&n drop in filter I did a test along a street from one point to another in both directions and noticed the difference in speed/or extra speed i got between the points in 3rd gear was an extra 7-9km/hr (depending on the direction) between the same points.. did the test with stock filter then 5min later same spot noticed extra speed and that was with the stock 'elephant snout' intake.

i've taken off the elephant snout and put a pipe to the other side for a 'fancy cold air intake pipe' havn'et done the same point to point acceleration test yet but it sounds alot more.. 'pod filter-eeeee'

tpa5,

the maf is not pictured. if you look at it the pictures are kind of skewed. his stock airbox is still there. the snorkel piece that he removed simply pops in place. if he doesn't like it, it will simply pop back into place. I actually removed mine as well. I did notice my temps increase (via ultragauge) though I haven't done before and after measurements.

I can't really see it making much difference. I personally have been looking at the ebay intakes that are running like $50 or so. I can't really see why not to get one vs the name brands that run $200+

I took mine off when I did my short throw shifter as I took out the airbox to get to everything anyway. I figured why not since I was already there.

the velocity stack is funny.

*smacks face*

Yup, you're right. I'm dumb haha.

I figured that temps would increase with this mod, simply because, like Jason said, you're sucking air from right behind the rad.

If you do buy an eBay intake, let us know how it works. I've wondered the difference as well between a Weapon R or some such vs. a fleabay intake.

I just did it for the fun of it.

It can always be glued back together again... although I can't imagine why I'd ever want to.

The throat of the velocity stack is larger in diameter than the stock opening that I cut off so the air box does get a little more air easier. I do like that it still points in the right direction, away from the radiator heat and towards the relatively cooler air of the fenderwell. Hey, I might even add some tubing and extend it to the opening in the well.

There is no difference in the sound, and yes it's just the stock filter. The velocity stack came from a flea market sometime in the 1980's that I got for $1. Never had a use for it until now.
