Hi, I haven't posted in years so forgive me if I'm not in the right place or using proper etiquette in any way.
I got into a pretty bad accident yesterday. 4 car pile-up and I was the second car. The lady who hit all 3 of us in line got careless driving, and this was the result of the accident.
Question is, does it look totaled to you? I find out tomorrow for sure. Just wondering what you all think I should expect them to say.
It's a 2010 Yaris Liftback with approx 49900 miles. Thanks.

Wow! Thank God you and your kid are ok.
looks totaled even if they were able to fix it, it wouldn't be the same..

Sadly, this is my son's second accident and he is only 7.5 months old. Someone struck my other 2009 Yaris back on my birthday in Nov. last year and I ended up trading it in for this one on Dec. 28th after it was 'repaired'. Needless to say, I owe much more than the car is worth, so if they total it, I'm out atleast 6k.
I actually hurt my back, neck, arm and hit my head on the steering wheel, my son is ok.

Yeah, sorry to say, that's probably totaled :( How badly were you injured?

It's totaled (easily) if you take to a dealer's repair shop. Mine wasn't as bad yours, but I made this mistake and had to buy back my car as a salvage and did alot of running around to get it re-registered as a result.
After the buy-back I took it to a reputable shop that got it fixed like new with used parts. Also, I saw a Prius there that was smashed in at the rear way worse than yours at that time. When I went back to pick up my car 2 weeks later, that same Prius looked like nothing happened to it and I watched the owner drive away in it with a clean title still in hand.
Long story short, if you wanna keep your car your best bet right now is to hunt down a good shop before getting it towed over there. Hope this helps. Good luck, and hope you get better soon.

This is my old echo. I got re ended as well. The air bags alone wrote the car off.
Estimated price was $18000 with labor to fix it.

Wow that doesn't even look that bad. My airbags surprisingly did not deploy, so that will probably help...

That much frame work will take weeks to repair. Just in labor cost it might total out the car. even if they do fix it, it will never be the same, getting a frame back to OEM shape isn't easy and it is doubted that the insurance will pay to have a real high quality shop do the work. Odds are it will either be crazy expensive or will just be written off as totaled.
Sorry to hear that this happened.

Is there any damage to the front, or is it all to the tail end?

I need a new front bumper, that's it in the front. My rear bumper ended up being attached to the car that rear ended me, and it was towed away. I need my license plate from it.

My bet is that it is totaled (particularly after doing some reshaping of that same area to allow me to weld in the supports for Crashy's dump bed). For your car a wrecked in the front Yaris would need to be located and then the entire rear third if the car would need to be transplanted. That would mean an incredible amount of labor and a finished product lacking the structural integrity it once had.
The rear of the Yaris is extremely vulnerable, and really expensive to repair. Especially the parts right in front of the rear bumper. Hopefully you can get money out of the insurance companies for injuries.

I got hit so hard that I actually hit the person infront of me. So that's why my air bags went off, I also had damage to my front bumper, windshield, etc...

With does many injuries, I think it would be best to get a lawyer involved. Since it was not your fault for the accedent..

Good to see you're both fine . Would be good thing if all hatchbacks had the air bag like that of the I.Q.. Not much between rear passenger and hatch door , especially if a pick up truck or larger vehicle hits the rear end . Maybe in a year or 2 . Hope you have better days ahead .

We are all very happy to hear you and the little one are okay.
I would not want the car back even if it was not totaled.
I would aquire an attorney,I'm not a sue happy person, but in this case
you may have a case with the other drivers insurance company.
Good luck,best wishes.

I figured it would be totaled. :frown: It doesn't take much to rack up the dollars. I have over $1000 hail damage to my Yaris and it almost looks perfect.
I'm glad you and your son are OK. And I'm glad you have retained an attorney. I hope you all throw the book at her. Was that careless woman who hit all of you texting?

Hopefully we will get some relief with the attorney. I have no idea if she was texting or not at this point. I am going to pick up the police report tomorrow morning. I will let you know, I'm sure a cell phone was involved one way or another.
Glad to hear you and your son are okay! I'm pleased to see you already have an attorney, shame on that foolish driver for not paying attention; make sure your attorney gives her a powerful legal smacking. I hate careless drivers. She should, at best, have her license revoked and be made to take a driving course. Hopefully the law can get her to compensate you for the loss of your vehicle, and the bodily injuries you sustained.
Keep us posted!
a big thing around here is to buy "gap" insurnace. not sure if you had it but it covers the difference between the value of the car and what you owe on it if you are upside down.
many times you are required to get it unless you put a large chunk down on a car. there again, around here.

I wish I had purchased that when I bought the car back in December '11, however if I decided to do that, it would bring my monthly payments to nearly $400 a month because I was already upside down on my trade-in.
I am hoping to get a chunk back from the extended warranty I purchased through the dealership.

Sorry to hear about all this, situation sucks especially when you owe more than the car is worth. :frown:
If you haven't yet, be sure to have yourself and your son double checked by a doctor, even if your neck and back are seemingly OK. People often feel the effects later down the road after such accidents. I'm sure you and your son are fine though, since this is still not a very serious accident.
Hope everything goes OK.
BTW, the irony of economy hatchbacks is that they cost more to fix when rear ended than sedans, even if much more expensive. A Mercedes S-class would likely just need a new bumper cover in the same accident, for example.

Hate hearing about careless people causing so much heart break for others, just glad you two are ok! Cars can be replaced, people can't and at least you only substained minor injuries. I just bought a '10 Yaris same color as your and have already had crazy drivers nearly hit me twice. I was able to get GAP insurance with my loan and am very glad I did.
Good luck to you and hope everything works out in your favor!!

Thanks so much. I am planning on having my son re-checked by his pediatrician soon. My husband works for Honda and I am probably going to end up getting a 1 year lease since they offer that to employees and their spouses. I would like a CRV but that is also a hatch... Blah.

I have the gap insurance on my Yaris; the Toyota finance mgr. tried to talk me into adding it on when I financed w/TFS, but I knew in advance my insurance company also offered it. It costs only $5.00 every 6 months, well worth the money.

So glad you are ok!
About three months ago my hatch was rearended by a Chrysler Sebring convertable, it only crimped the plate and pressed in screw head marks from his car's bumper into mine. Not worth persuing... Before that my Dad backed my Mom's 2006 Corolla into the front of the Yari which was parked right behind it in our DRIVEWAY! My niece was in the car, I was just getting in. No damage, incredibly strong car....10 YO girl was fine. Before that I rammed a large branch in the middle of the road after a hurricane at night. Just cracked a small part of the lower black grill mesh.
Overall, these cars are quite sturdy in low impact hits...

I'm sorry to hear you had to end up giving up your car. Hope you at least win your injury case and get another car soon.
