I have the strangest issue. Whenever I go to fill up my tank, the moment the pump clicks and stops the flow, a bit of fuel spills out. I HATE it. I can't figure out why it's happening and Toyota is of no help. I cringe everytime my precious fuel is wasted. Any ideas as to why this may be happening?
Note: I don't top off my tank. This happens when filling up from any level.
Thanks

Hmmm .. cannot say that I have had this problem with my Yaris, but I will admit that it is something I am scared of. I always stop putting in gas in the tank when the gas pump stops by itself.

I do as well. But when the gas pump stops, it seems it may be too late because that's when it spills.

It sounds like the refueling valve is plugged or sticking. It is a valve on the top of the charcoal canister that closes when the tank it full to prevent fuel from entering the canister. If it is closed while fueling the air has to escape though a tiny (2mm) orifice. That creates the same effect as filling a bottle directly against a faucet where, when it is close to full, water sprays out as the air can't escape fast enough and compresses.

How would I go about fixing it? It seems pretty invasive. Would I be better off leaving it alone?

It's a fairly easy thing to check out, since the canister is mounted behind the gas tank an is readily accessible. It's just a matter of disconnecting the valve and blowing through it.

How would I access the canister?

Just stick your head under the back bumper on the driver's side and you'll see it sitting there.

My 2012 has the same problem, every time I fill up, the pump shuts off when full and a small amount gets spewn out of the filler tube on the ground. I will be checking it out today after I get home.
