Apparently the last time I got an oil change, the mechanic never put the dipstick back -so I've been driving without one for the past month. A fellow yaris owner in my neighborhood was nice enough to lend me his oil dipstick so I can check my oil level. Could there possibly be any engine damage driving without an oil dipstick?

You dont say when you used the borrowed dipstick you were low on oil. So, no, based on that you are fine.

But I would plug the hole with another dipstick!

maybe it was a certain ex-YW member stealing it for his lifelong mission of ridding the world of plastic dipsticks?

yesss..........my precioussssssssssssss.....all the plastic sticks are miiiiinneeee, they don't believes us....

I don't think there are any issues with running without a dipstick - maybe after a lot of time something could happen, but i doubt it. just cover the hole with some duct tape or something until you get another one, lol.

There were still oil left in the engine.

Anyone know how much it would cost to get a replacement?

BTW thanks for the replys!

Call a local junkyard...probably would give you one for a few bucks or maybe even free.

Why don't you try going back to the place that did your last oil change, and ask them if they still have your dipstick? It surely wouldn't cost you anything, if they do. I'd say you're going to make another appointment later if they ask you, or if they say that your oil is due for a change. If not, junkyard or dealership. Dealership would of course, be the most expensive alternative for replacement. Good Luck!

wow...just did google searching and even tried Rockauto.com but they are like the unicorn it would seem. I am not sure if my replacement motor came with one, but I can check

I contacted the dealership a couple of hours ago and they didn't have my dipstick. Dealership said they would order a new one.

Thanks for the replys.

And that's why I change my own oil. I think incompetence in the world is at an all time high.
