The Yaris 1NZ-FE engine displaces 1497 cubic centimeters. This converts to about 91 cubic inches. It's rated at 106 horsepower. This is more than one horsepower per cubic inch.
If the Yaris engine was the same size as a 350 cubic inch small block Chevy engine, it would produce 408 horsepower.

I don't think it would be such a linear relationship :D

I didn't mean literally a 350 ci Yaris engine.
Just noting the amount of power per unit of displacement the little engine produces. And while there are plenty of engines with way better ratios, the 1NZ-FE is still quite respectable.

You are quite correct the Yaris engine is an awesome little powerplant.
By contrast a 1972 BMW 2002 fuel injected engine put out 100 horsepower. It was considered a kickass little car.
My 1974 Beetle was 1600cc and 48 horsepower. It never got more than 28 mpg driving 65 miles an hour. The ECHO/Yaris engien will kick its ass in mgs and it has more than twice the hp.

That was one of the very best 2002 years. The government mandated crap was just beginning.

Remember...lightand strong all harden steel body and safty. engine puts out highest hp to torque ratio in is class. 103 torque with only 2300 lbs is easy compared to the competion. Its a real fast geared transmission not a slow CVT type like the nissans and others. thats why it can do 0-60 in 9.2 seconds. http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/images/smilies/laughabove.gifFaster than fit, nissian and others in its class. VVT and a fast tranny is the key to the " FUN FEEL" in a yaris. I have a sedan and it can almost beat my 6 cly 3.1 liter malibu. its engnerring and weight ratio. the Yaris can take them all on.
