Mainly because I wish I could drive Crashy around town. It would be nice to make dump runs with her and be able to easily take her to some off-road places.

My other thought, before the whole Yaris truck idea, was to make one into a nice convertible.

That's something that I've wanted to have since I was a kid. A couple years ago I finally bought that Max Jax lift and it really is the handiest thing for everything from swapping on the Winter wheels and doing oil changes without laying in the floor to doing major work on vehicles.

Do you think a couple of extra steelies and some fiberglass fenders would hurt that bad...especially if you are removing weight in other areas to make it a truck?

It wouldn't be as much of a weight thing as a rolling resistance one. Although, it would never tip over.

I used rattle cans from automotivetouchup.com. It never ceases to amaze me as to how perfectly their paint matches. It just did the fender and you can't tell the difference between it and the door. The only issue is the cost. I bought 4 cans @ $22 each and I had to do so many coats to get the finish perfect that I blew through all four on just the fender.

The roof is thin sheet metal, with the primary strength being in the outer structure (above the doors) and the cross members. My intention is to build a tubular structure, kind of like the picture above, to replace the cross members.

I forgot about the wheels - I did sand them and shoot them white with Krylon primer and paint. I also shot the center of the hubs black so they don't look horrible showing through the wheels. I plan on finding a set of rally wheels for her, but for now the cheezy hubcaps are gone and the steelies are white.

I will definitely be throwing a set of fogs on her, and probably will add cruise control, just because I always have the parts on hand.

That was the great part - The previous owner only had liability insurance on the car, so no insurance company was involved to assess the condition of the car and potentially cause the title to switch to salvage. It will take a couple of weeks for me to get the title back from DMV in my name, but it will be a normal, not salvage title. Even the carfax on the car has no indication of it having an accident.

I have less than $1000 into the repairs, so when I filled out the paperwork to register the car I could honestly not check the box that indicated that the car had more than 75% of its book value in damage (which would also be a mechanism causing a live title to become a salvage one).

You need to run for political office. Someone with your brains and skills to get things done needs to be running the country!

So, the used radiator actually self-healed. I believe that the gasket between the top plastic tank and the aluminum fin section had shrunk a bit from being used, then drying out and sitting on a shelf for a year or so. I think that re-wetting and heating it swelled it back to shape. For now I am going to run with it as is.

kinda late to the punch here - but Scott, could you PM me about the core supports? i cant seem to figure out a few things about them - like if the sedan and HB share the same pieces or not. i can find all 4 pieces for the sedan, but not for the HB.

Funny story on that - I was scrambling to get the parts ordered before vacation and I did a buy it now on an ebay listing for all 4 of the parts for the radiator support structure for $100 (which is about 1/3 the price of buying the 4 from an online Toyota parts retailer). When I got back from vacation and opened the box I noticed that something looked a little different with the new ones. I went ahead an mounted them and everything fit OK. Then, when I went to put the headlight on, I realized that the headlight brackets on the radiator supports were in the wrong place (making the radiator tab of the headlight sit almost 1" too high. I went back to check my ebay purchase and noticed that in the listing it should compatibility with the 06-11 liftback and sedan, but the title of the listing was "2006-2011 Yaris Sedan Radiator Support". Somehow I missed that and didn't check the part numbers versus the EPC.

As it turns out the LB and Sedan share the bottom part. The sides, if purchased complete with the headlight brackets attached, are different, but if you purchase them without the headlight brackets, then they are the same. In that case you buy the headlight brackets separately. So, for that part I cut off the wrong headlight brackets and fabricated my own (since they are a simple L-shaped piece). The top is also different, but the primary difference is two extra support tabs (that have to be removed for the liftback) and two bumper clip holes in the wrong place (which can easily be redrilled for the liftback).

So, the bottom line is they top 3 parts are different, but can be easily made to work to save some serious coin. When I have a chance I will post the correct part numbers for the 4 liftback parts for you, in case you want to save the modification work to make the cheaper Sedan ones work.

mr_miles
08-19-2012, 04:09 PM
oh dang, I almost hit the "buy now" button one one of those bids. i knew the bottom piece was the same, but wasn't sure about the sides, and was pretty sure the top was different.
That would explain why the drivers side side mount on mine is cut. i bet the guy who fixed it before me did the same thing.

The sight glass is pretty limited. seeing liquid with bubbles running through there says that the system has at least some Freon in it. To really check it you want to check the pressure of the system, which can be done with an AC gauge set or with the Techstream tool.

Looks to have a bubble like that of a level . Did notice the plastic prongs that snap in place at the top of the radiator on the passenger side has slight play in it . They're not broke off . Should that be a concern ? Or be o.k.?

That's where the condenser snaps on the radiator. They typically snap on pretty tightly, so I would check to see if the condenser is bent or if it is simply not snapped all the way on.

that was quick. You should keep it flat black two tone

lol i done the two tone thing. i had my friend install two new fenders and front bumper after my first accident. it was a like a year later when a car stopped short and i rear ended her keyword "HER" lol. so the insurance got me a new bumber and had the body shop work on it. my fenders are still black since they werent touched in the accident. Here is a pic i just took when i was in PA. notice the bumber is painted. it was fixed again after another accident that was taken cared by the insurance and body shop.

Thanks. It actually looks great from about 15 feet away. From 3 feet away it is pretty obvious that I shot it will rattle cans (lots of orange peel). I had an issue with shooting the clear too soon on the hood and it reacted with the base coat, so I had to sand the whole hood down and start again. In doing so I really gouged the metal, so the hood has a lot of imperfections. I figured that it looks good enough for now for driving her around without it looking too bad.

I am currently shopping for an HVLP painting system and once I pick one up, I'll reshoot the bumper and hood (and probably replace the hood again, since they are only $65 for a new primed one).

Theoretically it will help. I just have a mantra that says that if I can buy a tool for less than what someone would charge me to do a job, I do so.

I have a buddy who was an auto body guy in his past life and he said that he'll teach me how to use it (I think he really just wants to use it on his 69 Firebird that he is restoring).

Ebay Power Mirrors arrived today.

This has to be one of the simplest upgrades to do. All of the wiring is in place on non-power Yaris, so you simply swap the mirrors, pop the switch into the dash and plug the connector (that is taped to the top of the under-dash fuse box) into it. Turn the ignition switch on and watch them move.

The mirrors were $31 each shipped and are new aftermarket ones. The power mirror switch I picked up off Ebay for $24.

Unboxing the new ones:

Swapping the existing red covers onto the new ones (they come with unpainted black ones):

New mirror on and plugging connector into the existing wiring:

Switch installed and mirrors operational:

Ebay Power Mirrors arrived today.

I really don't care much for the power mirrors (though I do have them in my RS Yaris). I am much more of a fan of the power windows and the power locks (as I pretty much use one or the other on a regular basis).

The power mirrors are for me pretty much a set it and forget it kind of deal. Unless I go to the car wash ... in which case I always seem to have to readjust them.

But I am looking forward to this thread in the future as I am just amazed at what you have done to that car.

Exactly. I did my daily driven 09 with Herculiner this past Winter and it worked great as both an undercoating and sound reducer, so I will definitely be doing this one as well.

This week the power door and power window kits arrived, so I have been working on installing them. I was initially going to install OEM power window regulators and motors and OEM door locks, but that turned out to be cost prohibitive.

I bought the power lock kit from A1Electric.com ($120 for the 2 door power lock kit with a keyless entry system) and the power window kit off ebay ($85 http://www.ebay.com/itm/190585310986?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)

I have the power door lock kit and the power window kit mounted, wired, and tested. Now I need to install the window and door lock switches in the arm rests and wire up the keyless entry receiver. I am still waiting for my Scion IQ hatch knob to arrive so I can wire up the hatch popper, like I did on my 09.

Here's the driver's side kit installed:

I'm just lazy. I don't like cranking windows or turning keys in locks. No matter what I do with her, the front doors will remain intact, so the power kits will be handy. The hatch is still TBD, but for now I like being lazy.

Mine wasn't intermittent. In my case the wire had a resistance of almost 3K ohms, which was enough to prevent the horn relay coil from energizing.

With yours being intermittent, it may actually be a damaged wire in the spiral cable. Try holding the horn on, while rotating the wheel from side to side. If it cuts in and out, then the spiral cable is the culprit.

ern-diz
10-04-2012, 03:55 PM
I had a strange issue with her today. I had a need to lean on my horn (due to an idiot who ran a red light and almost clipped me). When I leaned on it it was silent, so I had to revert to a flagrant bit of international hand gestures.

Tonight I did some troubleshooting, but was assuming that the issue was a broken wire in the spiral cable. The actual problem turned out to be that the wire between the horn switch and the spiral cable was damaged when the airbag deployed. It wasn't visibly damaged, so I didn't notice it when I replaced the airbag.

So, since I am the person who's name is synonymous with Yaris cruise control, I figured the simplest fix would be to install cruise control on her. (Since the OEM cruise control stalks that I sell have the wiring harness attached with the integrated horn wire).

I absolutely love when u use something not working as an excuse to upgrade an entire system i.e. horn not working so I'm getting cruise control...not the first time I've seen u do that between crashy 1 & 2 and I just had to let u know how awesome it is lol.
