There are two clips holding the pillar to the body. The center clip is standard round style used all over the car. The upper clip is special in that it is designed to hold the pillar in the event the curtain bag deploys.

Pull the trim from behind the weatherstrip toward the center of the car. When it pops loose you can see the upper clip holding it about 1.5 inches from the body. The clip rotates so that the end holding the trim can pulled through its opening thereby allowing it to be removed. It's best to use a needle nose pliers to rotate the clip as reaching it with your fingers will be difficult.
