With a screw driver. Create a noose put it around the filter then spin the thing tight around the filter. Then rotate the whole assembly I think it's anti clock wise.
The 2NZ-FE uses a canister-type oil filter: it screws onto the engine block beside the oil sump. You will see it clearly from underneath. No special service tools required for it, but tools do exist to make removal easier.
An effective DIY/household tools method of twisting off a stubborn filter is to hammer a punch or or stake or a similarly long, slender rod into its side and unwind it. Works every time and does not rely on a friction-based strap or pliers since it could be slippery from oil.

Thanks for the reply but the filter on my car is an eco paper filter not the cannister type and there is no obvious housing.

The oil filter assembly on your engine looks like this:
48064
There is a drain plug at the bottom, which you open first to empty it, and then you remove the canister to change the element (part number 04152-40060).
The wrench for removing the canister is: Assenmacher Specialty Tools TOY 640
The canister is an odd size (64.24 mm), so the standard filter wrenches don't fit (64mm is too small and 65 mm is too large)

Can I ask please. Is this the same filter and part numbers (with the same odd size for the removal tool) as on the new type Yaris (2011 year, 1.33 litre engine)

Hmm seems like a metal band oil filter wrench should work to grab the housing and turn it counter clockwise to remove? 64mm is ~2 1/2 inches. Metal band filter wrenches typicially accommodate filters from say 2 1/4 inches to 3 1/8 inches or similar.
2 1/2 inches is pretty small for an oil filter.....
