This was in my backyard today. I caught it with a 300mm lens, hand held.

Very nice!
You stripped (or YW did) all the EXIF data. Shutter? Aperture? ISO?
Enquiring minds need to know....

What an exceptional moment, Garm. You picture demonstrates the value of being aware of the world around us so that we can enjoy the "show".

About a half year ago, my wife and I were hiking up in the Park late in the day, and our neighbors were there with their high end camera and tripod and happened to capture the most remarkable double rainbow. The Sun was almost setting so the light was coming in both very bright and very low, and the clouds were wildly dramatic like in an Italian fresco. There was intense rainfall to the northeast while at the same time everything was bathed in golden sunlight passing under the clouds. The phenomenon came and went in moments, but was long enough for them to capture. We have a reminder of that experience on our wall.

Auspicious moments like these remind me of the movie "The Outsiders" where one of the characters quotes from an old poem:

"Nothing gold can stay."

Photoshop might have done that when I resized it and saved it for the web.

Here is the shot right before that one. It was sprinkling; a few raindrops are visible.

Great shots!

I had an Osprey fly right towards me then pull up about 6 feet from my face and take off behind some trees about three weeks ago. I was standing on my boat in the back yard doing some wiring, I turn around and here comes a big ass bird of prey wings full open coming right towards me...and then up and gone.

The bird wasn't attacking me, I just happened to be in it's flight path as it was being harassed by a group of small birds.

I wish I could have captured that image on camera.

Absolutely magnificent!! These new cameras are supplying the ordinary point-&-click guys with National Geographic-grade photos. Sorry, I gotta steal that one for my files...

:w00t: . We see red-tailed hawks in the trees off to the sides of the interstate . Much easier to spot them when the leaves are gone . Beautiful sight . Great pics .

Please do, and thanks.

Turns out it's a femaile juvenile  sharp-shinned hawk.
