For those who want a roof-rack, here’s an option.

Yakima has their universal Q-system, but they don’t yet make clips for the Yaris Hatch-back roof. Even if they make these clips, the Q-stretch kit will be required, which they claim isn’t stable for long loads. These tracks, a much more sturdy option, are permanent, but available now. Also, if you sell your car you can keep everything but the track itself.

Here are the parts from www.yakima.com

Tracks- 42 inch

Control Tower with landing pad-

38” Fairing-

48” Cross-Bars-

Yes, Drilling is required. 8 holes must be drilled for each track for a total of 16 holes. Instructions and hardware are included with the Track system. Track placement is personal preference but measure twice and drill once. Drill carefully as the bit can catch and thread into your headliner and puncture it (almost happened to me). Also don’t rest your elbow to hard on your “thin bodied” roof as it can be dinged easily (also almost happened to me). My towers are an older model, hence, they look a little different than the Control Tower, but I already had them. The Control Tower is a newer, better version.
Here’s the finished product.

Yes, I've seen roof racks for the Yaris in other countries. I have been PM'ed several times about mine, however, and that is the reason for the post.

brrrr just looking at those pictures makes me feel cold and wet...

Nice rack though (biggrin), certainly looks like it comes in handy!

Much Appreciated! I was one of the PMers and plan to go this route to transport my Kayak(s).

Most of the reasons other countries have factory racks for the Liftback is that they sell the 5-door model. Hence they have somewhere to clip the back end.
Simple, really....

True, I didn't think about that... Those racks probably wouldn't work on our 3 door liftbacks anyway. I wish we could get the 5 door here in the states.

I checked the Yakima sight a few weeks ago. I got the answer that they are currently working on a setup for the '07 Yaris LB. This meant 2 things, a: they will make a kit for it and b: they wont be able to work a system out and we are SOL. Either way, they say they are working on it. I'll wait for a non-drilled kit or order one from the Canooks.

Yakima's website has said their fit team has been working on one since I got my LB last August. Also, IF they make it, it's going to be the Q-system with the Q-stretch kit. Yakima claims it's, "not stable for long loads", which is because of the ways it's tensioned down. Even if they make it, I won't regret my purchase as it's much more stable.

What is the length of your tracks? Also, I see it doesn't run the entire roof, did you do that for a reason or can you run a longer track? Thank you so much for your help.

My tracks are 42 inches. 54 inch tracks would be a little long, but could be shortened very easily as the ends are removeable.

I was able to attach my old school gutterless Thules with just the two doors. It works well for my bike adaptors, but I tournament fish from a 16 foot kayak, and need a longer rack base. I am probably going to use your idea.

THANKS AGAIN!

Depends on the application, its about 1' apart on you pictures? Not stable enough for skis - they'll flatter.

how much did you guys spend for your racks? w/o the attachments.

around 260$

I went with this company they were really good for me, had free shipping, and sent out a pair of replacement bars when the one bar has a scuff on it that went down to the metal.

I highly suggest :

btw to those who want to carry ski's, canoes, kayaks, or surfboards you might have to get the 477 short roof adaptor to carry stuff safely.

THANKS! =) i was really looking into that, but im just not feeling how close the bars have to be cause its only a 2 door. i think i like the way that Petersredyaris did it with the rails and the bars are more spaced out. BUT i dont like the fact that its permanent. =( decisions decisions. (keep in mind, im really only using the racks for looks. but i'll use them every once and a while for bikes)

YARIS - Thanks!!! I've been pouring over what method/brand/etc to go with for the last few weeks. I've talked to a few people that I've seen with the short roof adapter, and so far they all seem very satisfied. Although it does look a little busy and clustered, the system has grown on me. I'm going for strictly function, but not sure if I want to go with the permanence as Peter has shown.

If you don't mind sharing, what are all the pieces that you've purchased altogether?

After much research and consideration I ended up installing the Thule track system on my Yaris. All in all, I'm happy with the outcome and the versatility it gives me. I still have nightmares about drilling holes in the roof....

If yours are Yakima tracks do you know if 54" tracks would fit ? I'm thinking 54" would do better with longer objects.

I used the shortest Thule top-tracks available. I also cut the 50" load bars down to 40". The fairing is 38" (medium).

well thats differnt! :)
I like that my system isnt permanent... but yours is nice in that its small and tidy.

I dont mind mine being a foot apart.... its enough to get a bike on top and also a basket at the same time.... as I have it now.

All the parts I bought FYI are in that cargogear link... the extra stuff I bought was the fairing, a bike tray, and a yakima basketcase.

I'm looking to get a rack for my 3 dr next year and am currently researching my options. I will be using it for a kayak at least 13 feet long so I'm nervous about using the short roof adapter system for a load longer than the car for possible torsional load difficulties I may face at highway speed. I have no issue drilling the roof as I'll never be trading it in as the mileage is too high and payments too many. My only concern is that my roof is dented on the drivers side right where the permanent rails will need to go. My question is will it be fine and the roof only dips maybe 1/4 of an inch. Or should I try popping it up, something I've considered since the damage occurred :bonk:. Only possible problem with that would be metal fatigue. So if anyone could offer advice it would be greatly appreciated, thanks. :help:

Yeah, I would pull the headliner and pop up the dents n dings....I gotta do the same as I have hail damage...(or paint it white and put a red "Titleist" on the car)

CTScott

Mounting the tracks might actually help with straightening it out. Be careful popping the dents, as it is very easy to pop the roof sheet metal loose from its spot welds and seam sealer.

Sorry to bring this one back from the dead, but here's another option for cheap/inexpenssive roof racks for light-duty applications. (less than 150lb weight)

http://m.ebay.com/itm/381450555641

These bad boys arrived pretty quick and installation was also pretty fast. Here's their official website:

Make sure to follow the instructions in the video, so you don't get stuck!

I have a Thule system specific for my 2009 3Dr yaris made for short roof. Yes it was expensive but you get what you pay for and paying cheap you get cheap with eventual damage to your seals and paint.

Good tip, thanks.

For me, it would be primarily looks and functionality secondary. I occasionally haul stuff, but I just like the look of the roof racks more than I think I'd actually use it.

Silly, I know lol.

Pictures from the other day at a show with the Thule Aeroblade Roof Rack.. I think I will be doing a little adjustment tho.. I feel the bars are to close together. Maybe cause of the aerobar instead of the square.
