My Yaris is going to a new home

Ode to my Yaris:

It's been almost 2 years, and my used 08 Yaris 3-door hatchback gave me rock-solid dependable service while providing me with basic comfort and safety.

I've been reading about the recent open season on Yaris's (lost at least a couple last week alone), and I decided to quit while I was ahead.

The car was bought with the sole intention of squirreling away some money (insurance, gas, and maintenance) until something else caught my eye.

The little Yaris got 40.9 MPG and only required oil changes. It did it's job and I got back 77% of the used purchase price after adding 30,000 miles to the odometer. It went back to Carmax, where I bought it.

I couldn't be more happy. I just wish I had the space to keep it, but the Expedition is our weekend/recreational vehicle (with extended family trips) and the wife refuses to learn stick shift.

This forum has been great. I'm planning to stick around some more because one can never stop learning.

I'm keeping my Yaris until the wheels fall off. Can't afford not to. Us poor folk envy you rich folk who can buy and sell one's car when one gets tired of it. My uncle used to trade in his Lincoln each year for a new one. Of course, he has dough. I'm just a poor working stiff, though....

I, too, have allowed my eye to wander, fooled around, and fallen in love with another car. The grasshopper green Mazda2 hatchback (new in 2011). My 2008 may have to go the way of yours! Was actually offered $9,500 in trade, but would still have to fork over $8,000 for the NEW 2012; I am trying to justify to myself the expense when the Yaris is actually "fine" (if, now, boring in comparison). Anyone interested is welcome to help!

Carmax buys and sells used cars. They usually pay more for good condition cars than dealerships do for the trade in. They checked out the car and gave me a written quote good for 7 days.

I could have taken that to the dealer to negotiate a better offer on the trade in, but my kids were tired after Carmax (cutting into nap time) and we had planned to take them to 2 different dealerships to see which car to get.

I dragged the whole family with me, and it took the whole day to get it all done.

Hey Otterhere, I thought I saw a green Mazda 2 at the Carmax I was at. Maybe something slightly used would reduce the amount you fork out for your next car?

I bought my Yaris from Carmax. Now it's back.

I considered a trade-in only because I simply don't have the time or energy right now to deal with a private sale (am working about three full-time jobs), but knew I wouldn't get maxiumum value that way. $9,500 was the highest offer, but I think they're making up the difference in their asking price for the Mazda! Will check Carmax; thanks for the tip!

Never quite warmed up to the Yaris, so maybe it's time for a new home where it's loved.

you'd do much better selling you car on a consignment lot rather than taking the trade in value from ANY used car lot, including carmax.

I'm still waiting to hear what "caught your eye" (I'm currently eyeballing the new FIAT 500 POP; so over the Mazda2 now), or did you just settle on the Explorer? Confused.

Best of luck with your Lexus. They are nice and at least you stayed in the family. :thumbup: As for these types of threads though I get a real kick out of them. Not really your posts OP, but others that talk about really how the Yaris is such an econobox. Perhaps I just got really lucky with mine, but the build quality with exception to the plastics used as the under panels for the bumper and the cheap nuts/bolts they used has been great to me and that is with it being a 4 season car. I get to drive all sorts of cars with the amount of travel I do for business and for the most part I always wish that I was driving my Yaris instead. Perhaps I am just strange :iono: . The Yaris (07-11) has so much potential too if you put your mind to it. I have no clue about the 2012 since I am just not a Liftback type of guy.

I definitely see your point about buying a Yaris to save some dough for something else because in all honesty I personally think that the manufacturers/dealers are smoking crack with the pricing that they have on many makes/models out there. Trucks are a real sore spot to me. I will never be able to fathom how you can buy a Boss Mustang or High End Camaro for the same price or less than a truck these days. Trucks rust out easier than cars from my experience and not only that, but a lot of their parts shit the bed a hell of a lot faster and that is even on the ones that aren't work trucks, but just plain ol' daily drivers. I have been on the market now for months for a truck and the pricing is insane even for one that is 10-15 years old with a rusty ass frame and suspension parts. Just crazy.

I bought it used about 2 years ago from Carmax for $10,998. Carmax just gave me $8,500 for it a couple of weeks ago, and now it's up on their site with an asking price of $12,998.

I just looked up the MSRP back in 2008, and it was $11,550 (3-door Base).

Crazy.

^ That is crazy. I just NADA booked mine and the high retail is at 10,500 (07 S Sedan with 76k) ...wonder how Carmax thinks they can get away with the price bump.
