Radio works but nothing else does

I bought my 2007 yaris used a few years ago and the radio works but when I press any buttons other than for radio the unit switches off.

I took the unit out last weekend and was going to replace it, but then thought maybe there could a problem with the wiring. I'm just wondering whether this has been a known issue with the unit itself, or maybe the wiring.

To check the wiring do I need to get an ammeter or something. Just wondering if it's worth doing myself or take it to a shop.
