Yaris Serpentine belt snapped

Hi Guys,

I've recently attempted to jump start another car and while idleing I gave the Yaris a rev to add some extra power to the jump.

However, when i revved it I heard a crack and a piece of something came flying out of the engine.

Car was still running okay but battery light came on, so timing belt is still fine.

However upon inspection, some sort of pulley wheel had completely fallen to pieces underneath the car and the drive belt wasn't attached to the alternator.

I'm not sure what it was that broke off however I'm wondering if anyone else can help? It's like a hard plastic wheel which was ribbed around the edge from what I can make out.

Could anyone suggest what this part is and is it easy to replace?

The car is a 2007 Toyota Yaris 1.8SR and currently has around 37,000 miles on the lock.

Pulley still on the alternator?

I am looking at the European EPC for the 1.8L and so far I can't find the plastic idler pulley. In a picture of the 1.8 that I ran into on Google, I see it, but for some reason I am not seeing or finding it in the parts catalog.

Thanks for the replies, I don't have the vin to hand just now, will wait until I'm home.

I believe it's the large black wheel but I don't know what it's connected to, not sure if it's plastic, perhaps it's carbon?

Pulley is still attached to alternator.

I'm thinking it's either the crankshaft pulley or the air conditioning pulley, but can't tell which.

Does anyone know if the crank pulley is metal?

Crank Pulley would be metal.

Okay upon further investigation and after someone else looking at it, the drive belt is still intact, but is off completely, not snapped.

As for the pulley in question, it appears now to be the air conditioning compressor pulley.

Is it normally possible for this to break up? Also would I be able to replace the pulley or would the entire compressor need replacing?

Toyota doesn't show a part number for the separate pulley, so you will probably have to replace the whole compressor. In the meantime, you shouldn't drive the car with the belt not spinning since the water pump is driven by the belt. You can temporarily put on the belt for the 1.8 without AC, which is part number 99366-K0910. That gives you a less than $25 USD temporary fix.

Just got off the phone to toyota for a new compressor, they want £850 for the part and including labour to fit, £1350 which is basically 2136USD to fix.

However, I've found a local scrap yard who have an AC Compressor from a 2009 Yaris.

Do you think this would fit the 2007 model?

Whatever you do, do not pay dealership prices for a simple compressor. They run $300-400 aftermarket, even less used. Are you DIY inclined?

An 09 one would be fine, as long as it is off a 1.8L Yaris as well. The part number is 88310-52601 for 2007-2011.
