Thought about it before, but decided not too.
Paint it (without sanding it first),if you like the look remove the paint, then sand prep and
paint it again...

It is probably just me ... but I don't like the look of chrome. This is why I like vehicles like the Honda Civic (I know .. did I really just admit that). It is for this reason that I don't like most of the new vehicles being produced these days.

But don't get me wrong .. I love my Yaris. Fortunately there is no chrome on my Yaris.

That looks 100% better!

Now, get rid of that cartoonish looking license plate frame and you'll be in business!

Yeah, until my plates come in, 6 to 8 weeks in Cali. They need to stay.
Unless I want to get pulled over.
This is my DD, I drive 60 miles round trip daily, too many CHPs around.

Its bad enough the GTR has no front plates. (refused to let the dealer drill the bumper of a $100,000 car)

Wait, in Cali you just roll around with a dealer tag til you get your tags? No temp tags in the back window?

Temp tag is on lower passenger windshield.
California law also allows you to drive 6 months without plates.
Sacramento is so broke, they take forever, so the law was changed to 6 months.

Many people here wait the full 6 months, so it looks like its still a new car!!

Steve Jobs never wanted plates on his car, so he returned his lease at 6 months!!

Oh, ok. In PA you get a temp tag that you tape in your rear window that's good for 3 months or so... but you get your new tags in less than a month.

Sorry about the thread jack!

That looks so much better. Very nice, indeed. It would be great if you could find some decent tails that actually looked like they were made for the car! How about rebadging with a VITZ nameplate?

Yeah, you need to remove the panel inside the trunk lid to access the bolts.

You will need to get new neoprene washers (6) before reassembling it.
They get damaged upon removal, and needed for watertightness.

I like my chrome trim. It reminds me of the early Austin Americas and early Mini Coopers.

I am happy that my 2007 has no chrome ... as I just hate the look of chrome. I guess you could call me happy.

There sure won't be a 2012 in my future. I also cannot stand that dumb single wiper on the 2012.

The single wiper clears more than the dual system I think. At least for the driver. It's also quiet as hell.

Im in the process of buying a 2012 and will definitely plasti dip the chrome. And maybe the side moldings also, depends on which color I end up choosing. Im debating between black, dark grey and silver. I find the chrome works with the dark grey but looks terrible on a silver car.

I don't like the single wiper either. I'd love it if a 2012 or 2013 owner weighed in re the safety of the single wiper -- does it clear the windshield as well as the double wipers on the Gen 2 Yaris in a medium or fairly hard rain? I don't like the chrome on any other color, but (after seeing the pictures of Hershey's friend's car) I do like the chrome and Classic Silver Metallic together on the 3-door. Isn't the Toyota emblem on your hatch chrome?

On your particular car, the black Yaris lettering and black Toyota emblem look good.

Not a problem with a single wiper.
Drove most of last week in the rain to and from work.

The rear is useless though!!

I like the single wiper, but trying to find a cheap alternative to replacing the full wiper with just a slide in insert.

Also, going to put a longer rear wiper on as there is room for it.

Let me know how the bigger wiper on the back works to see if I do it and then stop saying that is worthless weight :D

Remove the inside hatch panel with a clip removal tool.
http://www.amazon.com/Automotive-Molding-Removal-Marring-Scratch/dp/B003P6C38I/ref=sr_1_fed1_5?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1355199351&sr=1-5&keywords=trim+removal+tool+set

Remove screws and clips holding the trim piece on, from the insode!!

imike929
12-11-2012, 12:24 AM
Im sorry if this is a dumb question lol....do this with hatch open or closed?

imike929
12-11-2012, 12:42 AM
And with those tools (or a prybar) the hatch panel just pops off and back on when you're done?

Absolutely Red 12
12-11-2012, 01:16 AM
Open the hatch, look up, remove the panel.
Looking up inside the cavity, find 4 to 6 bolts sticking through, along the imaginary line of the trim.
Remove nuts from bolts. The trim is now held on by two clips on either end, using needle nose pliers, from the inside, squeeze clips, to release.
As I stated earlier, you WILL NEED new sealing washers, between the trim, and hatch, on the through bolts.
I bought very thin 1/4" rubber washers at Lowes.

Absolutely Red 12
12-11-2012, 01:17 AM
The hatch cover removes, and installs just like a door panel.

Dont use a metal panel remover, use a nylon one, else you will scratch the paint.

thanks buddy, i'll try it out!

Dumb question, but is that trim piece actually metal that could maybe be powder coated? Or is it just plastic like the badges/emblems?

b20vteg
12-18-2012, 12:47 AM
it's plastic.

Absolutely Red 12
12-18-2012, 11:58 AM
it's plastic.

^ What he said.

Chrome plastic, not plated. Just scuff it, spray adhesion promoter, 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of base, 3 coats of clear.

If youre car is red, I recommend pink primer.

I prefer a monocolor scheme on cars, but I find myself actually tolerating that one bit of chrome. Perhaps this is related to my overall satisfaction with the car itself. Quirky, yet a blast for a daily driver.
