My car just came back from dealer because of strange whining noise from either wpump or something in engine. Of course dealer says they cant diagnose it. Car only has 57k.
Help

Could be the water pump, alternator, A/C compressor (or something with the engine itself). You can remove the drive belt and run the engine for a minute. If the noise goes away, then you know it is one of the three devices driven by the belt. With it off you can spin each by hand to see if one of the three feels like its bearing is going.

Would the water pump be leaking fluid t was bad?

Often they do leak when bad, but if the bearings are just starting to go and the seals are still intact, then it would not leak.

Im gonna bring car back to dealer in 3k, if it gets worse. y say the pump will be covered with the 5 yr 60k warranty.
Thanks

C TScott, how are you? I got 2007 yaris hatch with 72k as now. I just replace the OEM alternator. I hear some noise from the engine is when the idle is low or the fan kicks in.
I dont hear it all the time. Its happens only when fan or low idle. Thanks!

I am having valve noise which started at 90,000 miles. the noise is most obvious while sitting in the drivers seat with auto trans in drive position. I think the firewall is blocking other engine sounds so that I can hear the valves clearly.try listening for noises from different locals.

Valve ticking is very normal for the 1NZ-FE engine. If you look at some of the oil discussion threads, some claim that certain oils reduce this noise.
