Breaking news right now so not much detail available. There seems to be some sort of fire risk with the window switches in a Gen 2 Yaris and some other types.

Toyota to recall 7.4 million cars

Toyota is voluntarily recalling more than seven million vehicles worldwide, including some Yaris, Corolla and Camry models, over faulty window switches.

The Japanese car maker said these would include 1.39 million vehicles across Europe, 2.47 million in the US and 1.4 million in China.

The call back is the biggest since Ford recalled 8 million vehicles in 1996.

Toyota said there had been no reports of accidents, injuries or deaths as a result of the window problem.

Toyota is also recalling 459,000 vehicles in Japan, 650,000 vehicles in Australia and Asia, as well as hundreds of thousands from across the Middle East, and from within Canada.

The range of Toyota cars affected include certain models of the Yaris, Vios, Corolla, Matrix, Auris, Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Tundra, Sequoia, xB and xD produced between 2005 and 2010.

Like most "recalls" I bet this is overblown nonsence that doesnt begin to threaten the safety of very many people.

And probably has something to do with imbecility on the part of the owner.

Although a few fatalities may be involved...

i hate toyota having my car for recall... last time they had mine for recall they flashed my ecu which changed the gas gauge bars when it falls of on certain km travelled..they didnt even tell me about it

Hrm, maybe I can get them to replace my window felt as well. I already have parts in hand and they'll be taking the panel off anyway... *crosses fingers*

Anyone venture to comment or show a diagram of what part is actually the culprit in the recall?

Actually they only have to pop the cover on the driver's arm rest to work on the switch assembly, which is this chunk:

Basically the switches are switching high current (~10 Amps) to the power window motors. They are directly doing the switching, rather than switching the coil on a relay (as is done with most of the other high-current switching on a vehicle). So, if the contacts are coated with something that is conductive or becomes conductive over time (the carbonization mentioned in the recall article), current flowing through the resistive (partially conductive) material will make it heat up. With the power windows being fused with a single 30A fuse, you have the potential to create up to a 420 Watt heater (14 Volts x 30 Amps) before the fuse blows.

I've never been back to the dealer with my car. I should take mine in for every TSB since it was new.

The fuel gauge has nothing to do with the ECM. The fuel gauge is directly connected to only the instrument cluster (of which they can not reflash). If something changed with your bars after the reflash, then it has to do with a change in fuel consumption.

Thanks for the reply CTScott, guess I'm stuck doing the felt myself... no godsent miracles to save me the trouble.

pulling off the door panels is easy peasey...putting them back on can be a chore to get the clips to align correctly and not fall off, but still not too bad.

Yea, just short of time in general. I'm not necessarily scared of the job, just looked forward to it maybe getting done automagically.

I clicked on this thread and could only see the OP. I thought HA, HA, HA not for hand crank window owners. I then started to scroll down and saw your first post -- same thought!

People self greasing their "notchy" electric window switches and having them burst into flames isnt a safety recall.

Its HILARIOUS!!!

:bonk:

Its serves them right for thinking they are better than me and my hand crank windows!

I don't agree with the 'thinking they're better' part, but I do agree (and maybe it's mean) that it is hilarious!

Unless it puts a child in danger. Then it isn't funny at all.

now im confused.. my average mpg before toyota had the car was 1st bar falls off at around 110km, 2nd bar 190-200km... after toyota my km was 165km n 2nd bar was gone.. and my average is 175 km for that 2nd bar to fall off.. but over all my mpg is the same for the whole tank. toyota must have done something >> but for now i dont really care..

I've repaired switches like these since I worked for Volvo in the 80s.
The carbon is NON conductive, thats why the switches stop working.
Wiping off the NON conductive carbon, allows the switch to contact.

BTW Pretty much all window switches do this wether they use a relay or not..

The grease used in Toyota switches become carbonized, and conductive.

And what does this idiotic statement have to do with the 7.4 million Toyotas worldwide that are being recalled?

Carbon is conductive and generates a great deal of heat when current is run through it, hence carbon-arc lighting or carbon-arc welding.

Did you miss the memo that the Yaris/Belta/Vios/Vitz are manufactured and assembled in Japan?

This is why I like cranks and manual locks. There are less moving parts and components to malfunction, break, or wear out.

I didn't buy a Hyundai because none of them came with crank windows or used real non-electronic keys to unlock the doors. I'm so glad I held out for the old trailing edge technology.

Right ALL power window switches do this. So ONE incident triggers a recall costing millions which does NOTHING to improve safety.:iono:

...more than two....but definitely fewer than fifteen....so, you're right, not very many.
