SSK Bracket help!

I can't get the cables off the original bracket. I have tried the door knob trick and wd40, and still nothing. I am pretty frustrated because I really want to change it soon. I have followed the DIY instruction here and I can't seem to get the cable loose. Please help! I'm about to lose my hair

You mean the little U-shaped clips that hold them on to the larger bracket?

Vise grips are very helpful... took me a while to get them off too. Just clamped 'em on the lip and wriggled it like crazy!

Try it in the morning... a little rest and not being frustrated went a long way for me! :thumbsup:

Hey brah. Take in a deep breath and exhale slowly (do this 3 times). Then go crack open a can of beer and take a break. Ok, good..now back to installing the super awesome "because race car" mod.

What seemed to work for me was taking a long flat head screwdriver and shoving it in the tight area between the U-clip and the top of the transmission cable. Turn the screwdriver left and right with your hand and eventually the clip will break loose. If that doesn't work, soak the U-clip in WD40 for a few hours or longer and try again.

Just don't let the frustration get to you. Like jpmck03 said above, having a clear mind goes a long way. Take a break if you need it. Modding your car should be fun. :)

Is it going to damage the cable if I have the vice grip too tight??? I wiggled the hell out of it already...LOL I know it should be fun and very rewarding but frustration happens sometimes. I can't work on it for a while again until I get out of school. So, my question is that will it damage the cables if I leave the short shifter because I installed it last month and recently I noticed that it's really rough to shift. I am sitting down now and having my coke LOL i don't drink! HAHA

I don't think you have to worry about having the vice grips on too tight... I'd just soak the clips in some WD-40 and let it work in for a few hours and try it again. I'd be a little wary about jamming a screwdriver in there as Freestylin mentioned, but that might work. You'd just be careful to not bend that clip while torquing down on the screwdriver.

I hear you on school, I'm in and working too, so "car time" is limited! You should be okay with not having the bracket on for a little while. I know that lots have people have run without the bracket and have been fine, so you should be too. But, you'll like it a lot more once you get that bracket in there, IMHO.

Oh, and glad to hear that you don't drink, but doing a bit of coke to relax might be a bit extreme... I hear it's a helluva drug! :laugh:

HAHAHA!!! gotta do a rick james on me. I guess I'll soak it WD40 next time I do it. Man, I really like the yaris because of the huge MPG factor. I changed my intake and the increase of MPG was noticeable. I just wish that the handling was better. Yes, I have been made fun of by those "sports car drivers" who believe that I am doing to much for yaris. I don't give a crap really!!! Anyways, where I am getting at is that have you ever been told such???

What you have to do is push the shifter cable and then pull the clip. Trust me! been there done that.

Mario, pull down or up? Also, what clip are you talking about? Is it the flat metal facing you when you are removing it?

I can post up some some pictures of when I did my DIY when I get back home... you have to pull up on that aluminum looking clip that holds the shifter cable into the bracket. Hard to put into words, but when you figure it out, you'll say, "oh, duh, that was easy!"

To be honest guys I feel like an idiot at the moment..lol This is my first time modding a car and have no prior experience other than reading forums. I know I may sound really needy but I'm a type of person who likes to venture into new things. Old gramps always told me nothing venture, nothing gain. i had a similar problem installing the MI short shift bracket, a claw hammer hooking on that lit of the u clip and a few tugs gave me enough gap to get a screw drive in to wiggle wiggle wiggle.

WD40 is a 100% must !!

To make it easier, what i did was to rotate the clip such that the flat part is facing LEFT instead up upwards in the picture.

Using a flat head screw driver and putting it in between the cable and the flat part, kinda using the "uneven" surface of the gearbox as leverage to "lift" the clip out.

It makes it alot easier for the right side cable, the left side requires abit more dexterity lol

Just watch your strength as to not damage anything and not let the clip fly out and go missing in the engine bay =P
