View Full Version : Ebay Fog Light Rant

I typically get 2 to 3 PMs a week from people who have purchased cheap fog light kits on eBay and are having trouble installing them. These always turn into PM chains, as there is never good documentation with the kits, and typically, the people who have purchased them and are asking the questions have zero experience with automotive wiring.
I never mind helping people out, but I have reached the end of my patience with this topic. So, from now on, those who PM me for support with ebay fog kits will simply receive a link to this thread.
Micro Image (a supporting vendor of this forum) sells fog light kits for 2006-2011 Yaris that are actually documented and work properly with the Yaris. They charge more than the cheap ebay kits sell for, but include a high quality relay that plugs into the OEM fog light relay socket. The cheap relay included with the ebay kits is an extremely poor quality relay with a high likelihood of eventual catastrophic failure. I have seen enough pictures of melted ones to know that it is not something that I would want to have sitting under my dash.

Does anybody know where I can get JUST the wiring harness. I bought these cheap ebay lights and am one of the people that have been PMing CT so I just need a new harness. And what are the bulbs that come with the Micro Image lights? I either have H1 or H11 HIDs that came with the eBay kit so I just want to keep my HIDs if possible since I have tested them and they actually work. If I can still use my HIDs that came with the kit I will probably buy the whole kit.

After seeing this for years and dealing with helping folks like Scott has on this topic the short answer is you will not be able to get just a harness somewhere unless someone has one just kicking around for some unknown reason.

Funny. The HIDs look just like the ones I put in my headlights and I've tested them so I they seem good. Their slim ballast and the only slim ballasts I've found are $70+. And besides theres a fuse.

I purchased after market ones that couldn't be aimed right. Even the ones Toyota sells arent really fog lights. They have poor adjustability too and actually make the fog harder to see through. They are really driving lights that ad a tiny bit of periferal illumination that can help in spotting roadside game at night. Even with yellow bulbs they dont cut the fog but they add a nice aesthetic touch to the car I think. If I had to do it again I would have mounted the lights only and wouldn't have gone to the trouble of wiring them in.

So I picked up the Micro Image kit about 2 months ago and they were easy to put in. I did put the Ebay HID lights in and I personally think they look way better than the HID lights my dad bought at a shop (but thats just me). I haven't had any problems so far. Just wanted to share.

Update: As CTScott said for us RHD guys, the wires are mirrored.
I found my scenario a bit different from what is documented. When I tap my red wire to yellow wire 3 and my white one to white/black wire. The fogs work with park and headlights.
The switch has the fog symbol lit on light switch on but the LED on the switch doesn't work (not too worried about that), the fog symbol on the dash comes on.

Further update, my headlamp switch started acting up. The dash lights, ac and shifter lights would randomly switch off and on. I bought the stalk with the integrated fog light switch and it was a really simple swap. Just follow ctscott's video carefully on how to remove the steering wheel and associated click spring.
Many thanks to CtScott again, this is really the best move for the fog light install.

Hi there,
I'm planning to get mine fog lights for christmas (quite mild weather here, about +5°C, not really usual) :D
Talking about the Micro Image kit, some questions are left:
1) Do I get it right that if I put in a light stalk with a fog light switch (and plug the relay, and of course install the wiring and the lights in the engine bay  ), I can turn on the lights from there?
I just don't like to use the cable clips which cut through the insulation ;)
Am I right they are just needed to switch it using the small switch included in the package?
2) Are the fog lights a special american version?
In Germany, they don't need to be tinted, but all lights have to have a signing similar to at least on of the three shown on page 4 of http://www.jokin.de/news/35/rueckleuchten.pdf
Otherwise, I could get trouble if the cops check my car or when I got to the mandatory technical inspection (once in two years).
If these two points work out, I'd consider ordering them :)

Correct on the wiring piece. You could also solder and shrink tube the included switch connections. The splice taps included with the kit make it so that those not comfortable with soldering can easily install the kit. The splice taps are used on the low current, coil side of the fog light circuit.
The markings on the glass of the light housings are "DOT" and "SAE".
The real Toyota fog lights have the "E2" in a circle marking on them.

I wasn't sure on which thread to post this. I ordered my OEM light stalk PN 84140-52151 last week and the package was delivered today. Wrong part was sent. Why? The vendor asked me for my VIN number and decided to send me the original light stalk that the car came with. Yes my order showed I requested and the order was taken for pn 84140-52151. I called, bitched, and now going through the motions to have the correct part sent to me. When all is said and done, I will lose a week and a half. My point here is if you plan on ordering this part, DO NOT GIVE YOUR VIN NUMBER. Just request the part number and be done with it. Hope this saves someone else the crap I went through.

That's a bummer. The key with ordering parts not intended for your car is to look on ebay for one with the part in question and then give the dealer its VIN. Or, simply order the part based on part number and don't give a VIN.

Well here is my story regarding installing fog lights on my 2010. I was in the hospital for a few weeks for major surgery during the past holidays...it wasn't cool. Anyhow my wife surprised me when I was stuck in the hospital with a new fog light set...not the one I wanted from Garm, but a set they used to sell at MicroImage. Long story short this outfit she purchased them from require a 20% restocking fee to return them so I am stuck with them. Actually, I only plan on using the lights and the harness that go upto the fuse box under the hood. I will be using the toyota relay and OEM light stalk from there. My question now, at the fuse box, plug A24 you have a pigtail that goes to pin #1 & #2. Are these wires from 1 and 2 joined together and spliced to a common wire and the split again at the othe end or does the wire from pin1 go direct to one light and the pin from #2 go direct to the other light? I know, another reason to rant....but I already covered that at home....she meant well though.

That's a sad enough story to warrant a response.
Pins 1 and 2 are separate feeds to the two lights (as each pin has a limit to the current it can pass), but from there they are joined together, so as the hit the fog light relay there is a single wire. To rewire your kit, you want to keep the two sets of wires intact until they hit their end points. The ground wires you can join into a singe ring terminal and connect under the left side headlight. With the other two wires you will bring them both into the fuse box. For the connection to pins 1 and 2, I assume that your kit does not contain proper pins to do so. If you need them I keep them on hand.

Thank you Scott. I already have the pins I need for #1 & #2. I will most likely do a video on this like every other mod i have done. I will be sure to give you credit for your efforts, as well as, give MicroImage a plug for their higher quality kit they offer. By the way, does anyone want my substandard relay and switch I won't be using?

So I too am one of those out there who couldn't resist grabbing those e-bay headlight / fog light set-ups. I am also, by no means, an electrician (vehicle or otherwise). I made a beginners mistake in trying to get the running lights to work and I left the power to the light on while cutting the stock running light off.
This made a very quick spark, slight burnt smell and the worst of all, none of my running lights (LED FWD, HALOs, and Rear Running) will turn on now. I figured I blew a fuse, but after testing (and replacing the two that say running lights in the manual) I have found not one of the fuses were bad, and I have found nothing to get any of these lights to work.
I have a 2007 two door with power nothing. It’s the most basic model the dealer sells with the exception of the A/C.
If anyone has any thoughts on what else could be wrong I would be forever grateful.

Reviving an old thread here... so with Microimage not apparently around anymore, is there a good source for a kit or parts list for my 07? I'm guessing the light switch would be the 84140-52151 referred to earlier? I don't mind researching and ordering all Toyota parts, but if the work has already been done I wouldn't mind "leveraging" it :)

Matt, I just bought a set of headlights from MicroImage on eBay. I think it's the same set they used to sell on their own store, minus documentation/instructions.
I haven't inspected the wiring harness yet, so I can't say if it came with the AliBaba sourced foglights, if it's stock or like stock from Toyota, or something else. So I don't quite know which sets of instructions to use for installation.
I'll keep you posted.

I actually developed the harness for MicroImage. They did start with the same type of harness, which is included with these types of kits, but very little of the original harness is actually used to turn the kit into a plug n play kit. Since Micro Image closed I have modified quite a few of the aftermarket kits for people to make them like the MI kit.
Making the kits plug n play requires obtaining the correct connector pins for the under-hood fuse box connections, obtaining the OEM fog light relay and either modifying the circuit board of the included switch, or wiring in a more compatible switch (with the switching and illumination circuits separate) .

I think I know there's one for OEM, another for generic add-ons, and at least one tutorial for MicroImage foglights. Just seeing how I'm not sure which one to follow, and if I have all the correct parts to make it as seamless and OEM-looking and -working as possible.

That is the standard completely incompatible ebay kit. As I mentioned above you would need to modify the harness as well as modify the circuit board for the switch to make it work. There are numerous DIYs for the aftermarket fogs, but I don't believe that any of them are complete with the switch modifications.
I was checking my car's wiring and it has the wire and plug for each fog lamp in the front. It does not have the relay and ovbiously not the stalk. So, all I have to do is change the stalk, plug the relay and install the fog lamps?

Theoretically that is correct. Was your car a Japanese market Vitz?
I purchased it in Panama, AFAIK it is labeled by Toyota as general market, but it shares several parts. The stalk, for example, is the same.

Was this plug n play solely for the benefit of connecting to a fog enabled stalk, or was the use of the switch in between the seats more straightforward ?
Based on the wiring diagragm and parts I was looking at, it looks to be a simpler install so long as i wire to the relay properly.

The purpose of the plug and play kit was to take advantage of the wiring that already goes through the firewall for fog lights.
The aftermarket kits are not actually designed for the car. There was a DIY on here about using the aftermarket kits with the OEM wiring, but the internal circuitry of the switch included with the kit bridges the switching and the illumination circuits together. Also the relay included with most aftermarket kits is garbage and many who have used it have eventually had it internally fail and melt its plastic case.

I disassembled my eBay harness, bought the proper relay, and have everything wired inside the car (using switch) and got everything under the hood wired up.
Relay clicks, and one fog lights up pretty weakly. I believe I traced it to the connection to the under hood fuse panel, I don't think my wires are reaching the pins fully. I bought the pins below thinking they were the right kind, but they do not go all the way into the plug. Are these correct, or an I missing some trick to 'insert wire'?
http://i.imgur.com/qdVuxpVl.jpg
Edit: connection might be good, as I tried it without the plug and touched the pins directly. Still one light on weak and the other off. Either bad lights or I need to have a dedicated wire to each, as they are spliced further down.
Odd I would expect both to be on weakly in that case

It seems decent and I will be wiring similar to a factory set up. I just made a minor mod to the wiring that came with the lights. The power wire to both lights were spliced together, I cut the splice so that each light is independent of the other. The two wires will be plugged into the underhood fuse panel.

OK many aftermarket Fog Light Kits will work with the factory wiring. A few things need to be fixed in the kit I used.
1. The wiring from the right fog light ties into the left. I separated the wires so that each light has its own wires.
2. The Toyota relay is not necessary. A Denso 567-0001 relay is readily available and inexpensive and WILL work.
3. In the directions found here, the aftermarket switch MUST be modified to work with the factory wiring. Simply remove the resistor indicated in the directions. Also in my kit, two of the switch wires were tied together. I separated them. One pair to lighting, the other pair to the headlight switch wiring.
4. The wires to plug into the outside fuse block, any reputable car audio shop can make the ends with the right connector on it.
Fog Lights I used worked perfectly.

OK I want to finish this up.
The wires to plug into the outside fuse block, any reputable car audio shop can make the ends with the right connector on it. In fact, for the two wires with the ends crimped on them was a total of $4.76.
The owner was intrigued. In exchange for explaining exactly what I had done, he loaned me a portable soldering iron, gave me a couple pieces of heat shrink and let me finish it there in his parking lot.

Anyway its finished and it works

I have not seen any good complete kits since MicroImage closed. I used to build the plug and play harnesses for them and can modify the crappy kits into the equivalent.
I am planning to install a cheap kit in the yaris using the original stalk and relay in the inside part of the car. However, since there is no possibility of getting the adapted harness, could you tell me which kind of pins should be used to connect both lights to pin 1 and 2 in the relay box?

Ok, I bought a new Stalk Switch. I'm just trying to find where the relay is located for my Daughter's 2013 Yaris. The loom connection for the bulbs are there. The fuses are in the fuse boxes that are identified as front Fog Lights. I'll buy whatever the f**k i need to buy for her car to work safely but the link you gave to micro whatever took me to a site when I clicked the Toyota Yaris tab it took me to a Nissan parts manual. Really appreciate a direction to get things for this vehicle. I see buying a Yaris in the Midwest is as bad as buying a Toyota in 1978 with respect to finding documentation on it. Everything is RHD.
At any rate any help would be appreciated. I can't find the damn relay or where it should be.on this 2013. Her 2010 was so much easier.
After reading the entire thread, not realizing it went back several years and rhe Microimage has been closed for years now.
Do I need to short any pins on the Stalk Switch connector? I bought a new switch with the Fog light switch on it for the 2013. It's installed as are a nice set of Fog Lights and Ultra 2 GTR Lighting LED fog light bulbs so I'd really like to get these fired up for her. Just can't seem to find the relay or where it needs to be installed.

Was hoping to find CTScott was still around since the last post on this thread was in 2016. His PM box has exceeded. It's storage cap so I'm guessing he's not around anymore. Guess I'll figure this out myself. Finding schematics on this vehicle sucks.

I have a 2014 LE and all I had to do was swap out the headlight switch/signal stalk for one with the fog light switch(Mine happened to come out of a 2010 Tundra) and install the fog light assemblies, bulbs and bumper trim pieces. The H11 connectors on my car were just taped onto the crash support behind the bumper cover.
Totally pre-wired, no finding fog light relay nonsense. Even the indicator on the gauge cluster works.

I am not sure if this will help. A FSM, Chilton's or Hanes manual will help!

both of those are GARBAGE..and good as a backup light on a truck and thats about it
if you want better country lighting get yourself some HID's for the headlights aim for 8000-10,000, and get a matching set of 8000+ for the fog lights, at that point youll never even consider auxillery lighting
my wife has issues with her night vision and we do ALOT of night driving in the winter and its useualy deep out in he country, i tossed in a set of the bellow link and it was litteraly night n day, shes actualy speeding on the country roads instead of holding up traffic, added the fogs and hid'd them and even on the worst of nights visability is NOT an issue

They are unavailable.
I thought HID are illegal?

What HID did you put in ONLY the foglights?
I don't want to mess with my normal lights.

HID conversions are allowed in Australia, providing that HID lights were originally available as a factory option on the vehicle. You also have to fit the complete alternate light assembly.
While there are HID conversion kits available that will replace the original H4 globes, they don't match well with the H4 reflectors, and will most likely not focus the light where you want it.
Have you considered an LED light bar? There are brackets available that will fit on the front number plate mount for these.
