Leaving this weekend to drive out to Columbus OH. Apprx. 730 miles each way.
Last time I made this trip I was on stock tires @ 38psi, & summer gas. I was getting 42-44 mpg.
Well now I just put on General Altimax Arctics for the winter, fresh oil change, and winter gas.
If I can get around 39+ mpg. this time I'll be pretty happy with that. Plus I'll only have to stop once for fuel, except for a brief stop to Cabela's in Hamburg, PA.
Right now combined city/hywy driving 37+- mpg. on the Generals. Of course since the snows have gone on daytime temps are in the 50's.

I posted this thread just so i can compare the mileage I got over the summer on this exact trip vs. now with the snows and different gas blend.
Will try to take a few pics along the way, as time and good weather permit.
This has been a bad day here in the States and while this may not be the time or the place or the forum for that matter, and not to turn this into a political or religious thread my thoughts and dare I say prayers go out to anyone affected by what took place in CT. today.

Yeah, I know CTScott and enviri live in Connecticut and I thought how much more intense and magnified this must seem for them and their families....even more numbing than for those of us outside Connecticut.

Have a safe / happy one and keep us up to par . We're getting 37 overall with the Blizzak WS 70s' since put on 3 > 4 weeks ago . The Altimax look to have a fairly low resistant tread design . All the siping of the winter tires probably won't help the F.E.. The Eco-Meter is showing 39 for now . The calculated has been lower since the cold / wet weather . Might have to reset it . Now at 96 .

I drive from Temecula Ca to Redding Ca a few times a year on I-5 at 713 miles each way. If I can stubbornly avoid the road pressure to hit 70, 75, or more mles per hour I can eek out 38-39 mpg and thats the bet Ive ever done.
Otherwise, that trip at 75+ mph puts me into the 34-35 mpg range.

I just paid 2.81 9/10 on 12/16 (lowest credit card price in our metro North of I-10 on that day). The cheapest in our metro on 12/16 (and right now) is 2.68 9/10 in League City (about 50 miles south of me) at both HEB and MurphyUSA/Wal-Mart. I heard the price is about 3.97 9/10 though in Hawaii.

I'll bet proximity to production helps re the price for all 3 of us (posts #19, #20, and #21). Around our metro, League City is pretty close to a few refineries and other often inexpensive gas locales (Friendswood and Alvin) are fairly close by. I also found the same to be true in high-tax California.
Taxes sometimes play an even bigger role. Look at New Jersey vs New York and Connecticut. Also, South Carolina often has some of if not the cheapest gas, and there aren't any refineries in South Carolina.

UPDATE:
752.2 miles door to door
4 Stops - Twice for Gasoline, first at the midway point, 2nd at the end.
Trip running time - 12 hrs. 46 min. (included a drive through at Mac's for coffee and b-fast)
Started with a full tank stopped midway through put in 9.78 gals.
Stopped again .5 mile my from final destination put in 9.329 gals
752.2/19.109=39.36 mpg.
Will post some overcast, and highway pics soon.
UltraGauge had me at 41.2 for the trip, but I know that that is based on 11.1 gal at full when in fact it can be 11.6 or even more at the first click. It has always registered 1-2 mpg more than the pump actual, (which Is really the only thing I go by).
The temps were moderate for mid-december started in the low 30's at 2 AM in SE Massachusetts and wound up in low 50's near Columbus. Was overcast whole trip and only once a brief rain event otherwise roads were dry.
Returning Thursday, when the weather is forecast to be mix of rain/sleet/snow etc.
Gas on the road was 3.39/gal. Here outside Columbus in 7 days it has been 3.25, 2.99, 3.07 currently 3.19 gal.
Happy Holidays.

You're right. I saw your post and made note of this before doing my price search. I found a station 3 miles north of the station I used on 12/16 and it was only 1 cent more per gallon (now 2.82 9/10) and it ended up being fairly crowded. This station is tied for the second cheapest in our entire metro. My 2.81 9/10 on 12/16 was the cheapest credit card price north of I-10, but not even in the top 15 overall). The cheapest is still in League City, but that price has risen from 2.68 9/10 on 12/16 to 2.79 9/10 now.
I hope those of you who are experiencing significant wind today aren't experiencing power outages. I celebrated Christmas last night with a group of friends who 80% or so (like me) have no family in Texas. Because the remaining percentage do, Christmas Eve was chosen for the celebration. About 10 minutes after I awakened this morning, my power went out. I waited for about 2 hours for it to come back on (it didn't), then headed to Starbucks (internet and food). Just a few minutes ago, I spoke with another customer here who just drove through the traffic light closest to my house and he said it is still out. Argh. Another customer and his wife told me they got stuck on a road earlier today (pretty far from my house) because a big tree had blown over onto the road. Actually, I really feel bad for neighbors who are having gatherings and might not have generators. At least the temperature is in the high 60s (F), and the sky is quite blue now  (it was raining when I awakened this morning). Happy Holidays to all!

In So-Cal if I drive to achieve maximum MPG on the freeway (uh, "slow enough to") I'd be ticketed for obstructing traffic

Bronsin I was doing locked in cruise control 62 when speed limit was 65 and 55 when posted 55, I didn't exceed speed limits, actually the ultraGauge trip function I believe had me at an avg. speed for the trip at 58 and change mph. I had the CC on ALWAYS.
There was no traffic, I mean none, zero, zilch, nada anywhwere and I mean anywhere along this trip. Nothing in New Haven, NJ, PA NONE. I doubt I will ever be that lucky again.
Returning Thursday AM. Snowstorm coming through here tonight through tmrw PM. Will see how that goes.

38-40 psi is the only range I like. I wish I could stand a psi closer to my tire max (44), but when I go over 40 I feel like I'm constantly driving on bricks. Each person has their own preference, as the tire max (or even 20 percent over) is just fine to some people.

Wind! Wow! When that Starbucks closed, the barista (with help) could barely get the door open to let everyone out. I had two more things I wanted to lok up on the internet, so I sat in my car for a few minutes after they closed. During this time, WHILE I WAS SITTING IN IT, THE WIND WAS BLOWING THE BODY OF MY YARIS AROUND!....as if it was floating with the wheels stationary. This had never happened to me before. This also happened one more time at another stop I had to make on the way home. When I awakened this morning, the news ticker alerted me to 3 deaths due to the wind and related storms just in the Gulf States -- 1 of those in Houston where a tree blew over onto a pick up and the driver was killed. I also learned that I was among 70,000 people locally who lost power. The tornado in Alabama was part of the alert, as was news about the terrible accident on I-40 in Oklahoma. I also heard 'headed north' (rust belt and NE U.S.)...so YW members up there, be safe .
Making it through the winters up there driving (especially when you have to drive to get to work ----instead of using public transportation) I have to give all of you who have to do that a lot of credit. I could drive and live with a 105 degree heat index 365 days a year. I could also live in an area where it snows all the time during the winter if I didn't HAVE to drive, but I couldn't live in an area with snow and snow on the ground all winter if I also HAD to drive daily during the 'snow season'.
Also, FYI -- I picked up a Dallas TV station last night (previously unaware this station was part of my cable tier) and a traffic reporter mentioned that salt is used on the roads in Dallas...so It's not just in the most northern states (if I remember correctly which areas use salt and which don't was bart of the discussion on one or more threads re the 'Bolt T.S.B.').

Running my winter snows at 35 psi all around.
Just stopped snowing here got about 4-6 inches, the worst part of the trip home tmrw. will the the first few hours till I get into PA, leaving at 0400 hrs.
Anyone who has read any of my posts knows I like to try to squeeze every mile out of this little egg. No excessive speeds, CC on all the time, never touching the brake if possible, rolling to stop signs and lights. I can live with 39 mpg this trip NP, and in the winter if I can get 36-38 conbined I can live with that.
I mean really, I don't think I could have done much better on the way out, no traffic etc. Weather conditions tmrw, plus picking up my brother in NJ mid afternoon, I'll be happy if I can get 35-36 mpg.
BTW-I stopped at Cabela's on the way out and got a Ragg Wool Sweater on sale for 17.99 + tax.

Bronsin, I have an automatic, but I learned my lesson last time I made this trip, there are only a couple of steep long climb ups, and when I came to them I would switch the CC off.
But I would say it was on 90% of the trip. Again, and I can't state this point enough, I ran into no traffic whatsoever, no even at at a toll. It was remarkable. And most speed adjustments that I needed I made with the CC stalk.
I left at 0220 hrs on a Sunday morning.

For some reason the 'winter snows at 35 psi all around' made me think of Idahotom's fairly recent post where he wrote that he let some air out of the normally amply inflated tires on his Yaris in order to get up his hill re snowfall.

Good to hear you made it back safely. No or sparse traffic definitely helps. I once went skiing for a week in early December with my girlfriend at Mt. Bachelor near Bend, Oregon. We flew to Portland, rented a car, and drove to Bend. We didn't encounter any inclement weather until about a day before we left, when it started snowing intermitantly. I had to buy chains for the rental car. We figured that when we got to the point where chains were needed, there would be someone there we could pay to put them on. No such luck. A nice man who had to put his on helped us and we got it done. Fortunately the rental car was FWD, and fortunately it was a very new automatic with a low first gear. We made it up Mt. Hood and over the other side without issue. I kept it in first gear nearly the whole way. The traffic was very sparse, in both directions. The sparse traffic was a VERY helpful 'aid'.

Just back home, Postponed my return one more day.
And of course I jinxed myself with all my "no traffic tales"
I left this AM at 0340 hrs. And walked through my door at 1830 hrs.
At one point around 0900 hrs. I, with hundreds, perhaps thousands were parked, well I was, engine off for almost an hour, sitting about five miles from the entrance to the Blue Mountain Tunnel on PA turnpike.
A tandem tractor trailer and another truck went through the guardrail on the Eastern side, eastbound lane of the Kittatinny Mountain Tunnel on the downhill rollout.
Through the guardrail off the side of the mountain. Have to tell you it's a bit unsettling seeing that many tires facing the sky. I hope those involved were not seriously injured.
Then there were the Harrisburg knots, the Tappan Zee crawl, the New Haven Maze to a standstill, the Branford race to nowhere etc. etc.
Will post my mileage numbers tomorrow, The Dewars is calling.
Will also be be posting a comment on the General Altimax Arctics in the wheel sub., what a great snow tire.

I mainly want the 49ers to get the #2 seed back (Green Bay will have to lose in addition to a 49er win) and the Texans to keep the #1 seed (you're right, just need to win).
Tuesday isn't as good as it would have been back in the day when so many bowl games were on the 1st and that kept people off the roads, but it would probably be okay. Depends on what time you leave. Might have fewer drunk and or tired drivers on the road on Wednesday if you can swing it.
When my previous reply to you posted, I saw NEexpat's reply from 11 munites earlier and typed a reply to him and posted it. I then saw this reply from you, but my reply to NEexpat was missing. Yep, Bronsin, have a safe trip mate.
I'm sure I don't have to say it, but I will anyway, when in doubt............................................. .................................................. .................................................. ...................slow down.
^^^^^ Sage advice. I wish more people down here would follow it while driving in the rain.

I plan on cruising at 60-65 mph to conserve gas as much as possible. I HOPE its not necessary to go 75 because traffic isnt safe at 65!
Of course if the weather gets involved I will get my wish and be lucky to average 40 or so...:frown:

I mainly want the 49ers to get the #2 seed back (Green Bay will have to lose in addition to a 49er win) and the Texans to keep the #1 seed (you're right, just need to win).
.
At least you have prospects for the post season. The Giants are better off falling on their swords and waiting for next year. If they make the playoffs it will just be WORSE.

Mileage Numbers:
Left with a full tank, stopped three times for gas.
1st. Filled to first click - 9.653 gls.
2nd. $20 in Clinton CT.- 5.436 gls.
3rd. Top off 1 mile from home - 4.557 gls.
Total 19.646 gls.
Total Miles 754.6 miles
Miles per gl. return trip 38.40 mpg.
Pretty consistent, all things considered.
UltraGuage had me at 42.4 mpg. I believe I am going to have to look into that and learn about calibrating it, if possible, the way those of you with Scanguages do.
Also I may change the Gas tank size setting from 11.1 to 11.6 or even 11.8. I kinda use that extra "unseen" gas as an added safety margin on DTE mileage number on the guage
Gas prices in Columbus the morning I left were 3.19/9 gl. Clinton CT. - 3.67/9 gl. Home 3.45/9 gl.
Still working on posting pics.
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year, and if your travelling stay safe.
Cheers.

Yeah, after a 6-2 start I thought they'd have a better second half. I like the Giants (even after watching the 49ers beat themselves and lose to them in the NFC Championship game last year and re the 1990 season) . I can't stand the Cheatriots, and I loved watching Eli and Co. beat them in Super Bowls 42 and 46.
