Need to read a code for ABS light on, tried a simple £12 reader from ebay but no codes stored was displayed. Whats the reader that works best for the yaris please?

To read the ABS you need a Toyota specific reader, as standard code readers only read the emissions (OBD) related codes.
You can read the ABS codes though using just a jumper wire between the CG and TC pins on the diagnostic connector. You can use a piece of wire or paper clip to do so.

1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Insert the jumper between the two pins.
3. Turn the ignition to ON.
4. Watch the ABS light and it will flash in a pattern indicating the two digit stored code. (it will be a series of short flashes, followed by a pause between digits and it will repeat.)
5. To clear the stored code, press the brake pedal 8 times in less than 5 seconds.
There are about 20 or so codes, so let us know what code(s) you see and I will let you know the cause.

it flashed 3,1
just from web search am I right in saying its 'right front wheel speed sensor circuit'?
Ive fitted a new driveshaft recently and at the same time cleaned the sensor in the hope that would resolve to light.
So do I just need to replace the sensor and cable?

31 is the right front wheel sensor. Was there a lot of corrosion on the connector? If so, you might want to try cleaning both sides again.

I rechecked the ABS sensor and it had cracked so ordered a new one fitted it but the light it still on. Ive tried pressing the brake pedal 8 times but that did nothing, Ive also tried disconnecting the battery for an hour but the light is still on.
Ive checked the flash code again and it still says its the front right (3,1)
Any suggestions please?

Did you jump the pins (and leave them connected) before pressing the brake pedal 8 times?

OK. That would mean that it still thinks there is an issue with that corner. Did the harness look OK to the sensor?

the wire from the sensor to the connector seemed to be intact, is there anything else I can check or some way of testing the connection to the ABS unit?

You can pull the connector from the ABS actuator and test the wires for the sensor using a multimeter.
On the Connector A4, Front Right is pins 27 and 28
