As the title says... Post what brand, weight, and mileage intervals you do your oil changes with. Also, don't be afraid to throw in your oil filter brand that you like.

I use Pennzoil Ultra. 5W-30. I change at every 5,000 miles. I use Toyota OEM filters.

I have used Mobil 1 0W-30 & NAPA gold filters since my Yaris was new. It has 67K miles on it now and I change the oil every 5000 miles, although I plan on extending it to 10000 miles next oil change (I will switch to NAPA platinum filter).

I change mine once a year with Amsoil. I bounce from 0w-20 and 5w-20. I'm also using Amsoil EA oil filters, once a year as well. When Amsoil temporarily discontinued their EA oil filter for the Yaris, I was using MANN oil filters and changing them every 7500 miles.

Been doing this for a while now, and my engine compression test is just a few psi lower than a brand new engine. So I think the Amsoil is worth it ;)

Twice a year at 6 months or just under 5,000 miles . Have to because of the Platinum warranty . Use Shell synthetic 5w-20 for the cold months and their 5w-30 during the warmer weather . Now using AC Delco PF 1233 oil filter for less than $4 each . Shell synthetic is under $3.40 a quart . May get a used oil analysis at upcoming oil change . Depends if the weather cooperates . Outdoor O.C. on the drive .

You'd be better off running 0/30 for cold and 5/30 for hot.

The 30 wt end of the oil is measured at 212*F, that does not change once your engine is warmed up, wether it be winter or summer.

I had a '82 Subaru with 188K on it that I only changed the filter on it occasionally. I burned and seeped oil at a 1 qt/month rate. That equates to 3 gallons a year.

That makes me laugh.

My father didnt change the oil on his cars either...not to stick it "to the man" but in his mind if the engine light wasn't coming on, there is nothing to worry about or to do.

His cars typically got an oil change at the dealership he traded them in to for his next car. Typically every 5 to 6 years, and 50-60,000 miles.

Dont know where I got my OCD-about-maintenance gene from, but Im a stick to the book kind of guy when it comes to vehicle maintenance.

My old man NEVER had an engine failure.

yea, but things like efficiency are affected. And when you are paying 50¢ a gallon it really doesn't matter, but when you are paying $3.50, 5 mpg can make a difference. And i am sure that person who didn't change the oil didn't change any other fluid either, and that can also kill gas mileage.

I use mobile1 and mobile1 filters on all our cars and I do it whenever the maintenace schedule calls for it depending on the which car it is.
Question..I used to have an s10 truck. The 2 wheel drive called for a pf41 filter and the 4 wheel drive called for a pf51 filter which was a much longer filter. I started using the longer filter on my 2 wheel drive truck thinking more filter capacity is better. Is there a longer version of the 103 filter for the Yaris?

I believe the Corolla filter is longer and fits perfectly, or it could be the matrix. if you search the forums, their was a member that bought them by the box from the dealer.

for me, local mechanics are charging dirt cheap for oil changes. $16 for everything for a synthetic oil change.

Every so often someone fires up this type of thread again and I chuckle cause they are so fun to read. I changed over to AMSOIL a few years back and became an AMSOIL dealer going on a year and a half. I change my oil once every 10-12k as Kaotic does.

I have all lubricants now AMSOIL. I really noticed a nice difference with engine temps when I changed to their coolant and I really like how my tranny as well as my brakes feels with their fluids. Overall a great product line in my book. I think that I did take pictures of the top/bottom ends of my first motor when it blew and they both looked super clean. I ran AMSOIL for about 20k prior to the blown pistons. Before that I ran both Royal Purple and also Mobil1. Personally I preferred the Royal Purple over the Mobil1, but for some reason when I ran RP the engine temps seemed to be a bit higher.

People can say what they want, but actually I believe in the product so much that I still have my racing oil in the motor right now in Northern Maine temps. I plan on changing it again here shortly and am thinking about sending it off for an analysis. I have almost 10k on it. Usually I would run their SAE 5W-30 Signature Series and only change to the racing oil for the land speed weekends. I never ran 5-20 nor 0-20, but that is just me.

It costs about $20 for synthetic oil changes at home . Oil filter $4 ( AC Delco PF1233 or Toyota YZZF2 ) , 4 quarts Shell synthetic oil at $3.50 each ( w/tax ) , and paper towels . Can't beat that . Here are U.O.A.s from the sedan . Column 1 : Shell syn 5w-20 , 2nd : Shell syn 5w-30 , 3rd : Pennzoil Yellow Bottle ( P.Y.B. ) regular 5w-30 . So now you have voided out any warranty you had left or you were already out of warranty...correct?

Using AMSOIL at the drain intervals they gaurantee DOES NOT void any manufacturer warranties.

Either way why in the hell would you worry about having a Yaris warranty? It is just about impossible to mess up this 1nz-fe powerplant unless you do performance changes that push it past the threshold it can handle. I could understand if it were an upper end Camry, Camry Hybrid, Landcruiser, truck, Avalon, etc.

Amsoil's intervals are 25k miles or one year, which ever comes first. You retain your warranty as long as you don't have engine modifications on your car. I believe Amsoil will pay for any damages if you're within your warranty period.

I agree with fnkngrv re why would anybody worry about the engine warranty on a Yaris. The only way I can imagine frying the engine (stock) within the warranty period would be if you changed the oil and forgot to secure the drain plug. See post #49. Okay, assuming I agreed with you on what you just said, why then would you bother to run a premium priced synthetic oil if the only way this engine will ever fail is if you failed to secure the drain plug? So you can go 10,000 miles on 1 oil change? Wouldn't you would be further ahead moneywise to do 2 oil changes at 5000 miles with conventional oil?

After rereading my post #40 on this thread, I wasn't saying which I use (conventional or synthetic) but I can see why someone reading that post might think I use synthetic. I've never used synthetic oil in any car I've owned, and I've evolved to a philosophy fairly similar to UberSilver's post #8 on this thread re mileage intervals. I think the deal Why? found in his area is amazing. Only $1.05 more for a synthetic change/filter in MA than a conventional change/filter in TX! I've found almost everything to be more expensive in MA than in TX.

One might wonder why the lack of an 'outcry' re Toyota's warranty not matching that of some competitors. I feel there isn't an 'outcry' because matching those warranties isn't necessary. The overall reliability of Toyota vehicles across the whole company speaks for itself.

To others: I don't know why the system is doing this, but bairjo is replying to my post in #58 and I'm replying to his post in this #59 - not each of us replying to our own posts.

Nice catch on the system posting issues. I think we have talked this subject to death until next month when another "which oil should i use" thread is started. It was good discussion this time around.

Thanks. I don't know why are getting that system area. When this specific thread started, I looked at my log book and made a list of the mileage for each oil change. Then I misplaced the list. I just found it. I'll include it as a reply to UberSilver's post #8 and as a last post on this until next month or beyond. In the beginning (when I was still under warranty and also a noob as a Toyota owner) I changed my oil more frequently. For the last 122k + miles I've tried to be just under 20k between oil/filter changes.

I currently have 235,728 miles on my Yaris. I had the spark plugs replaced at just over 208,000 miles for the first time (amazingly, a Toyota dealer was the cheapest place I found). When I picked the car up, the service writer at the dealership told me they tried to find things to recommend that I do re service, and the only thing they could come up with was to change the air filter (I had a new one waiting in the wings t put in myself after the spark plug change). He said the engine is in great shape and is not burning any oil.

P.S. oops...almost certain I left one out. I felt guilty after the 34,014 lapse between odometer 38,036 and 72,050 so I changed again at 74,000+ . Will check log book again.

P.P.S. Checked. 74,000+, to be exact, was 74,480

They didn't put the cap back on after putting the oil in the engine! I drove back to the place and pointed this out to the owner. They drove to the Toyota dealership, bought me a new cap, returned, changed the oil and filter again, and gave the car back to me with a cupon for a free oil change. I did avail myself of the free oil change (and double checked the results upon completion), but by the time for the next oil/filter change came around I went to another place I'd found (that was cheaper as well).

" It costs about $20 for synthetic oil changes at home . All oil intervals in the reports had the Toyota 90915-YZZF2 oil filter . "

Did a oil change earlier and will be posting a new U.O.A. of the SHELL synthetic 5w-20 (S.N.) with a AC Delco oil filter . The oil / filter had 4,649 miles of use . Had to get it done thanks to poor weather in the upcoming weeks . Have to change oil / filter on the driveway ( brrrrr , was 28 with a light wind and some sun :frown: ) . Replaced the AC Delco to the Toyota oil filter with another round of the SHELL syn 5w-20 . Will be about a few weeks before posting the U.O.A.. Hope all turns out well .

It is interesting that the semis are going 100+ thousand miles in some trucks. They send off oil samples every so often and do an oil change only when the numbers start to look bad. Often they can tell when something is going wrong with the engine before it breaks by picking up on what is in the oil. Also, they use gallons of oil, not quarts.

Got an oil/filter change recently at 240,010 miles...about 14,000 since last change. I could have gone longer, but figured this close to a milestone would make it easy to remember without looking at my records. Later that day I got my free tire rotation at Firestone....about 15,000 miles on the tires....again an easy to remember milestone. Firestone does a free balancing with each rotation, which I did not know before. I just happened to see the tech roll one of the tires away from my car, mount it on the machine, and close the lid.

P.S. This = my 15th oil change since purchased new

^^^^^ P.S. Added on 5-22-13

P.P.S. ----- Just noticed today (2-28-14) that this was my 16th oil change, not 15th

Hey guys,
just purchased 2007 Yaris RS with 106k kms.
Two days ago did an oil change.
Prefer Mobil synthetic 5W30 (Extended Perfomance if possible).
With Mobil oil filter or K&N filter.

5qt jug of synthetic Mobil from Walmart in the states is roughly $26.
Mobil filter is $15 and K&N is $8.

Gonna do oil change every 4000 kms.

This is just awesome... Really, really inspiring to hear you got your oil changed at 240,010, just awesome! I've had my 2013 for about 7 weeks and just turned over 1,000 miles...I'll be lucky to put on 7,500 miles on it in a year. With this kind of mileage (240,010) I'll never think twice about putting extra miles on my car - you should be proud!

OH, I just figured it out, you averaged an oil change every 16,000 miles - I can't wait to change the oil on this car, but it will be awhile. Every time I talk about how easy it will be to change the oil on 'Scruffy', I get the ball & chain saying, 'Don't forget you have 2 years of free oil changes' - Yeah whatever!

Thanks. My inspiration among Yaris owners who purchased new is Yarisworld member trini_per4mance. As of March 27th, 2013 he had 492,000 miles on his Yaris. Before doing his brakes for the first time at 400,000 miles, the only repairs he did were replacing the alternator at 323,000 miles and replacing the shocks and struts at a bit over 150,000 miles (and he probably didn't HAVE to replace the shocks and struts). You can do a user name search for trini_per4ormance and when the results display, go down to the 5th thread listed (Finally, 450,000 miles....etc) and click on page 1 and look at post #1. whenever trini completes a new repair, he updates that post with a text edit to include the new information. If I can get to 400,000 or close to it without any more repairs (just the alternator and wheel bearings so far)....just oil/filter changes and a battery and another set of tires I'll probably trade it in at that time (or donate it to charity)

Among Yarisworld members who are original owners, there are at least 4 between trini and me. When Contraband831 posted that he was at 246,000 I was at 244,400. Another original owner/member is at 265,000+ miles and two more are at 350,000+ miles. Tops among our non original owners (and he's enhanced his Yaris quite a bit) is Mazilla at over 530,000 miles. Mazilla bought a courier company that included 20 Yari....and each Yaris (among the 20) was at some point in the range between 350,000 and 500,000 miles!
