It's been a long time since I've posted on here (pretty much since I went back to stock) .. Well last night I forcefully had to say goodbye to my second Yaris (first one was traded back in for this one).

I was driving home and noticed that my fogs had stopped working about a mile and a half down the road from my job. As I pull towards the expressway, I notice a smell and it def. was electrical and sure enough when i look up, I noticed some black smoke billowing from under my hood *oh fuck*. I pull into the park and ride and when I get out of my car, I popped open the hood to where the smoke was. I knew it had to have been coming from the fuse box and sure enough, there was the box being melted by flames.

I didn't have my extinguisher (took it out years ago) so up in flames it went and 911 I called.

Gonna miss it. Glad to say I'm okay and glad I notice shit right away.

Only things of value that were completely incinerated were my PSP with all of my music, my spare glasses and DJ Domo.

Somehow my craftsman tools did not melt, my carbon fiber Ray-Bans (case was melted) and my Canon DSLR body and 2 lenses made it undamaged, but the camera had water damage. Drying it out to see what happens.

Have full coverage so I have a rental in the meantime.

Wow - I saw your post last night on Facebook about it and was glad to hear that you were able to walk away.

Based on your description of the fogs not coming on and then the fire originating from the under-hood fuse panel, it sounds like the fog light wiring within the fuse box was to blame. Did you just have the "standard" aftermarket fogs?

Thanks everyone.

Glad to see that there are some original members still posting too.

Only thing aftermarket was the wiring used from an aftermarket kit. I got tired of the aftermarket ones breaking with my first and bought factory. The wiring was the same used from even the first Yaris using the awesome tutorial on here to connect (I'm not being sarcastic, it's easy and is basically a factory setup).

Now the only thing is that I went to Mavis to get my driver tire plugged and they had the hood popped open after they said they were going to check the brakes only. Why would they need to do that? To check the fluids? It was opened for a while and down for a while before finally being lifted up.

Either than that, I haven't been under that hood unless for an oil change which I was planning to do this weekend (coming up on the 85000 mile mark).

Hmmm. If they removed the top of the brake fluid reservoir and did not replace it, brake fluid would have splashed out and could easily have caught fire once the engine and manifold heated up.

Holy shit man, I'd forgotten all about you. Along with BrazdonW, you had one of my favourite cars on the site for simple elegance in mods. Photoshoots were top notch too.

I believe you have now achieved a new level of notoriety. The first of us to go down in flames.

Got your eyes looking to the future yet?

It's in Huntington at the yard, but I'm able to go over there. Where abouts you gonna be on the island? I'll PM you my number.

Thanks

I'm probably not getting anything back on the account that I still owed a little over 6,600 on the vehicle.

But I told my importer to get my other car out of customs ASAP ..... might have a loaner to use in the mean time.

Old schooler? He drives an 08...my first as well. The good ol boys club mentality that keeps being presented here seems to be kinda a joke. The oldest model is a 99....hardly "old School" What's next?...Yaris Hall of Fame inductees? The original posters club?..I need another break from this forum...

dude. old schooler meaning in the yarisworld arena. I KNOW old school. The 'good ole days' in the northeast area was around '08-09, and just so you know, that's his second yaris. Before that, we were both in Import Fanatix with our 240sx's. Let there be an original posters club, i dont care. I owned older cars, (one was a 71 240z), and still keep in contact with the older crowd. In this forum, people buy and sell yaris pretty fast, and there is only a handful that keep em...let alone mod them within a year of ownership.

You picked a hell of a thread to be a dick.

I didn't post a lot but Trey's car was my background on my computer at my old job. Not long after that (early 2009), I bought my own Yaris to make it two in the family.

Sorry to hear of the loss T, but at least you're alright.

So here's the update:

Car started because of an electrical issue in the fuse box (or so the investigator concluded).

Car was appraised at *K and change. I still owed 6K and change and minus my 1K deductible, I'll get some money back.

And yes, I'm an old schooler to this Forum (2 Yarii to be exact) .. what's you're beef? ;)

Thanks everyone for your concern. I'll post up the last few pics I took yesterday. I went and got my one plate and CD's which I knew survived somehow lol.

amazing in a terrible way and amazing that you had yourself and some other items make it out reasonably ok. sorry to hear about this. as for folks always crashin in with BS well that is just the state of forums in general really and one reason why they become stale imho.
