Took my car in for its oil change last weekend to the dealer, and when I said synthetic please they asked if I wanted 0w20... I didn't think my Yaris (2009) was one of those approved to use the 0w20 stuff?
I have no problems using it next time, but I have always ran the recommended 5w20. Of course its just out of warranty now as well.

i think they just keep using thinner and thinner for better mpg. i just bought a 2011 highlander 4 cylinder and the oil cap says 0w20
It does help gas mileage, but the oil quality is actually better. Even 7 years ago no one would have thought about using these oil grades because the oil would break down far to fast to be useful.
Now they are still extremely thin, but they are actually strong enough to last actually being used in cars.

Yeah, they put Kendall syn 5W-20 in my car this past oil change. I didn't say anything because in Houston, it is already too damn hot all the time.

The lower viscosity number only applies when the engine is cold and during warm up, once the engine temp is up to operating temperature the higher oil viscosity number is predominant.

Well te question about has something changed relates directly to 0w20 was not approved before so its good that it is now. Curious if it makes any difference. I doubt it seeing as most of the time the engine is in the higher temp range.

even at the higher temp range, the oil is thinner. That means better gas mileage.

I believe that Hersey had started a thread a couple years ago about the formal notice from Toyota about the change, but it might not have been him.

I think you are right and he posted this PDF file:
