New Yaris LB owner here. Had it for almost a week and love it. The only thing I really miss with the car is keyless entry. Done some digging around, I see where most everyone has installed "non-Toyota" solutions. My dealer has offered me good pricing on the VIP system (parts dept), and I was curious if it is plug and play. Thx!

If your dealership is offering it to you as a good price and they are the ones installing it, the part will be covered under the toyota 3 years 36,000 mile warranty. The same happened with me. I've had my yaris for 2 weeks and had the same install. It's all covered under the factory warranty.

shagrat, you have power locks?

They have a good price on the parts, labor is a bit out there. I noticed the part number gets very specific depending on the car, making me curious how "plug and play" the system is.
My car came with pwr locks. I'm not after a security system per-se, I just dislike having to use keys to lock/unlock the car. Was in Circuit City over the weekend and they had a dei keyless kit for 109 installed (way cheaper than the Toyota parts). I'm just worried I'd get a slacker who'd mess up the car.

Picked up the VIP system today. It is plug and play, the exception being having to move a couple wires from the factory harness over to a the alarm wiring bundle...no cutting. My wife and I are going to tackle it this weekend.

Good move. The keyless entry is a lifesaver and having the security i guess gives you a sense of security.

What is the Toyota VIP security system? How is it different than keyless entry?

For me, it is both an alarm and keyless entry. My car came with all power, no keyless entry. It is listed on the Toyota website under accessories.

My wife and I installed it this past weekend. Definately 99% plug and play and Toyota has excellent instructions. There were three wires I had to swap between the vehicle harness and the VIP harness. This was easily accomplished using a jewelers screwdriver. In all, it took us about four hours including running through the post installation checklist and adjustments. Honestly, the hardest part was taking off the necessary panels for access. It was so easy "a caveman could do it." :)

My dealer gave it to me for $295.00, matching what trdparts4u (http://www.trdparts4u.com) sells it for.

Thats a good price. Do I understand that the set will not only add security but also remote door locking and opening?

If you have power locks, it will add keyless entry as well as security.

I was looking into the idea of getting this, but i came across the idea of the programable Keyless/Sec. System, that has different settings for items, such as windows: Example: A Lexus has the windows set to lower 10% to let heat out of the vehicle when you open the doors to the vehicle, I thought that was pretty cool.
I dont know if they have any setups like that, not to mention has anyone tried to setup an electronic switch in the hatch of the yaris to open with a hit of a button, for say on the keyless? Automatic lift-gate? Just put some heavier duty cylinders to open the gate from close to open?

So they didn't have any problem selling it to you knowing that you weren't going to let them gouge you on labour?

Well, I checked the Toyota Canada accessories site:
Keyless Entry $353.50
Security Upgrade (Dealer installed keyless entry required) $107.75
Those are installed prices(sans taxes) I think I'm going to take my income tax money and either get them to do it for the above prices or see how much cheaper it would be for be to do it myself.
I've been using just a Club(name brand) for too long, plus I really miss having keyless entry.(Our written-off Echo (http://www.echodrivers.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10373&highlight=) did, but aftermarket)
The thing I don't like about going aftermarket is that the people installing your alarm have never seen an Echo before. The worker at the place told us that we didn't have power locks, because he couldn't find the switch. :iono:

The parts and service departments are separate. The parts department agreed to match the price on the phone and ordered it for me. When I picked it up the next day, I had the parts guy print off the installation guide for me. When I got it home and opened it up, I called the service department and was quoted seven hours labor...needless to say I said thank you and hung up promptly.

Installation included:
*Removing a few pieces including the passenger glove box and driver side plastics.
*Temporarily removing the daylight running light relay.
*Unplugging/plugging different plugs to run alarm harness inline.
*Removing pins (three I believe) from factory harness and swapping them with pins from alarm harness (jeweler's screwdriver all that was needed to release the pins).
*Running piezo buzzer into the engine compartment...a factory plug is removed from firewall and replaced with a new one included with alarm kit.
*Pop led/glass break sensor into console panel (by aux plug).
*Mounting alarm brain to passenger side behind glove box.
*Zip-tie cables up neatly
*Test.
*Reinstall removed plastics and glove box.
The Toyota instruction sheet was extremely helpful. The drawings made finding everything very easy. My Yaris is a commuter to/from work (consultant...lots of road time). My accessories are all removable or small enought to put in the glove box (gps, ipod, etc...). The alarm has basic functionality (as compared to DEI, Viper, etc...), but is more than I was looking for...and my doors/hatch unlock without a key :).

It's possible that you are describing something else, but as a FYI -
When you open the door on a car and the window rolls down and then it rolls back up when you close the door, that's because the door is supposed to seal better/easier that way.
I need to look into getting this system, especially if it's plug and play.

does the vip security system pop the trunk too? or does it just unlock and lock the doors?
also, what the does the remote look like? can you take a picture? I looked in the yaris manual and it shows a key with built in buttons, not a seperate remote attached to your original key.

The VIP security is a separate remote. It's actually the same remore (identical) as my fathers 2003 4 door tacoma. Just a lock and unlock. You hit the lock to lock and unlock once to unlock the driver door and twice to unlock all doors including the back hatch. Does not pop the hatch though. It also has an insert in the center concole button holes with a blinking red light and a VIP Security written on it.
