Just want to share what I have done over the weekend...

I just installed a backup camera on my girlfriend's Yaris. The car came with a hole for the camera, so I went and bought a 3rd party camera that fits right in the OEM location. It looks OEM from the outside. I am planning to get a double-din radio to display the image, but right now just settling on 4.3inch LCD screen.

Install was relatively easy. It took about 2 hours total to wire up everything neatly. The system works just like OEM, the camera is on only when the car is in reverse.

It cost me about $35 for the camera and about $25 for the LCD screen.

Here is a pic of your hatch door and the location to install the camera.

I have those cameras from eBay. Search eBay for E328. Comes with a cable power adapter you have to solder, and RCA line. The RCA line is about 17 feet. I use the cameras for something else.

I have about 30 to 40 cables if anyone needs an extra. This is the cable that runs from the Camera to the monitor.

For those that don't want to run cables they also have wireless.

This is the exact camera I got and it fits perfectly. It basically fill up the hole in that exact shape. Very good day and night quality too. I don't know if it's really that Sony CCD that makes the difference.

hello, may I ask you if the connector that came from vehicle for the OEM camera at the tailgate (close to the hole where the camera was installed) did you wire something there (to that connector?) if yes, can you tell me what and how? my Yaris has on that connector 4 cables, pink, brown, black and blue. Also, where in the car you placed the monitor? thanks.

Don't know about the Yaris wiring, but the camera has a diagram. Also you can put the Monitor on your rearview mirror or on the dash.

Some people replace the radio with a computer display/radio/stero.

I thought that on the third generation yaris the camera is already installed by default! Any way I have a question regarding the camera and the display monitor.

This camera comes in very handy when I park the car but the display I have a few issues with. For one during the day if the sun is shining on the LCD touch screen I can not see any thing. I got an Ipad screen protector and I plan to cut out the 4.3 inch square to use on the monitor. It cost me 15 euros but I could not find any thing for an 4.3 inch screen and when I went around asking for it people looked at me like I have too much time on my hands or some thing.

The other thing that bothers me with the touch screen is that when I am not using my rear camera it is of no use to me. So if I had my way I would just turn it off but I do not think that is possible or better yet to continue showing the rear camera and possible recording it. Of course I know that the last part would involve some additional hardware but I think that is an investment that may one day pay off in the case of some accident especially if there was also a front camera set up in the car some where and I could record that as well.

would it work if I tap the reverse camera to the reverse signal light ?

or is there a cleaner install for a connector in the fuse box ?

Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, on my yaris that's where the keyhole is. I wonder if I can stuff a camera there instead. Mind posting picture of it on the outside?

It's amazing.

When I was a bus driver/college student in the 1980s (the University ran the city bus line and all its drivers were work-study students) we had ONE bus with a back-up camera. A REALLY BIG DEAL; and it cost more than a new small car. Camera on the back; miniature CRT screen on the dash.

We were told not to turn it on unless actually backing up - because sunshine would hurt the tubes and electronics of the camera. Now this was not old equipment - the bus was a 1985 Gillig, the equipment put on in 1986 when the bus was placed in service.

Today those things are the size of a big bolt - and you can buy the hardware for less than $100.

By 2017 or 2018 back-up cameras will be mandetory on all cars in the US. Hence why its starting to be standard on a lot of cars now.

I use the camera list in post #5. It is designed for Toyota. It's snaps right into the factory camera slot. It's not an universal camera.

Quick questions, where did you wire the red wire and the black wire for the reverse camera ?

Thanks :)

Have you installed your reverse camera yet ?

How did you feed the wires through the trunk and into the rubber grommet ?

thanks

Realize this is an old thread. Well, last year anyways.

I'm planning on putting a Back up camera on my 2010 sedan Yaris. I bought wireless adapters so I don't have to mess with the wiring all the way to the front.

It looks simple enough (famous last words). The only real wiring will be from the camera that already has a slot on the trunk. Looks like I have to cut a couple of screw wholes and one cable whole. Then run the cable via the harness under the trunk liner back to the left reverse light. Spice the reverse wires to the the camera. Hope it's that easy. On the other end, I'll hook a 4.3" monitor to the lighter plug, and hope I don't have to use it, lol.

Here's a camera I found on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/170-CMOS-Anti-Fog-Night-Vision-Waterproof-Car-Rear-View-Reverse-Backup-Camera/231571879816?_trksid=p2050601.c100085.m2372&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1% 26asc%3D20140211132617%26meid%3Da4218ff912464c6c91 08cc613925a951%26pid%3D100085%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D4%2 6sd%3D390712768007%26clkid%3D6444060139841760279&_qi=RTM2067268

I also have the License Plate Frame camera. I'll see which I want to use.

Sorry to bump an older thread here, but the camera link in post #5 does not work anymore (well no stock anyway). Does anyone have updated links on a camera that will fit exactly into the pre-made slot?

Have done some searches on ebay and amazon but not sure how well they would fit into the slot
