Getting the oil changed and the snows off Wed. (Thank you General Altimax Arctics for the past few months, one great snow tire!)
The trip for me is 754 miles each way, leave in the the middle of the night on a Sat. or Sun morning with a full tank and re-fill almost exactly at the halfway mark. 375+.
Will log it all and compare to my Ultra-Gauge readings and post here. Running stock tires 38 psi. Will toss a bottle of Techron in after oil change. Replaced air filter at 36k miles now about 40'500 miles.
If no traffic delays, CC on ALWAYS. fully expect 42+ mpg. At least.
Since the snows have been on this past winter, mpg has been an abysmal 35.2 mpg. And that was probably 60/40 city, hywy.
Will try to take some pics along the way, but those who saw my last pics know Ansel Adams legacy is safe from me!

^Thanks
As a follow up and not to start a new thread. Oil was changed and tires switched over. They told me a couple of things that the stock original Potenzas will need to be replaced in the near future. OK knew that. Also that a caliper pin must have gotten stuck on the PS brake and caused uneven wear on the pad. Front brake job in the future. Going to have my mechanic take a look when I get back.
Well I'll run these tires the rest of this year switch over to the snows and get new ones next year. I'm guessing I'll get about 47-48k miles out of original tires.
Also talked to them about the control arm bolt, TSB, extended warranty etc. And had them inspect them while it was up on the lift. Also asked what that consisted of, they said they remove the bolt and inspect it.
They told me they were OK.

Are you going to Ohio, or leaving Ohio? Your location on your signature says S.E. New England.
Have fun. Stop at plenty of rest areas for that wonderful coffee. On the I76, I use to buy the coffee inside the rest area buildings. Then I figured out that the Gas Stations next to them had Fantastic Coffee. They have different flavors too.
Really like traveling. Not that my daughters out of college I have no where to go but local places.

^Leaving tonight, early tmrw morning to go out to Columbus.
Be out there for a couple of weeks. Got gas yesterday at the Stop & Shop for $3.36
Shell station around the corner from here is just under $3.60
I try to make only one or two stops on these trips, fuel, pit stop maybe a bite to eat but I pack coffee, gatorade, snacks. Apples and bananas, something I can toss out the window that is biodegradeable. j/k. And advil and aspirin.
Takes me about 12 hours if there are no major delays.
Last trip out I detoured to go to Cabelas, no need this time since they have now opened one outside of Columbus.

^ On this trip CC set around 62 when posted 65. I try to keep the RPM's just under 2700 and that for me is arounf 62, 62.8. And then whatever the speed limit was after that.
Here are the numbers and right now I am not sure if I'm disappointed or not
737.6 miles
18.51 gal.
39.848 mpg.
Utra-Gauge had me at 42.2mpg. So I'll split the difference and call it................................................ ...........................................the hell I will. the only gauge that matters to me are the pump readings the Ultra-Gauge has always been 3-4% better than actual.
I left at midnight no traffic whatsoever. Temp. when I left was mid 20's and was mid to high 20's for the first 5-6 hours.
I was really hoping for 42+mpg. So I don't know if it was combo temp and winter blend or what.
So thats it for the outbound leg.

Well, drove back from Ohio yesterday. For those of you who are curious It is apprx. 417 miles from Blacklick OH. to Cabelas in Hamburg PA. and I did that with 2 bars and apprx 2 gals of gas remaining.
This was by far my best tank ever. 417 is the farthest I have gone before filling up.
Ultra-Gauge had me at 46.4 mpg. Here are the actual pump and mileage numbers
744.7 miles
17.472 gals.
42.62 mpg.
I know the UG was higher than actual, but I also knew the actual was going to be good. I just kept driving. Mileage would have been better but I took the CC off around NY till I got through the construction in CT.
The first half was 417 and I got 9.623 gals. for 43.33. Had I left the CC on I think I could have gotten 43.5+ for the trip. I just wanted to get home.
And when I got home, I had a $26 love letter waiting for me from the Delaware toll blah, blah blah, on the way out there was some night constr. that funneled me into the EZpass lane at a toll, and I blew right through it. A toll I don't recall from my trip out at Christmas.
I used to think the mpg/mph sweet spot for me was just under 2700 rpm, but I am thinking now it is closer to 2650, which gets me about 62.2, 62.8 mph.
cheers.

^Nook, thats a good question, and I wish I had saved the numbers somewhere.
When I had a regular commute I tried a tank with the CC on whenever possible and the very next tank without it and I seem to recall it was 2-3 mpg difference. Now that was combined back roads 35-40 mph, city and highways 65 mph.
Since I have owned the car and installed the CC I always felt that I couldn't match the CC on mileage.
*BTW with regard to my "sweet spot" sentence, obviously the lower the RPM the better the mileage. Anything less than 2650 rpm 62mph, I believe that to be the minimum, and still be able to travel on 65mph posted highways without being a PITA.

Will be heading out to Ohio again in a couple of weeks, same 'ol same 'ol, leave at night only this time might be a weeknight so I am more likely to run into night construction.
I WILL NOT MISS THAT BLOODY $1.00 TOLL IN EASTON, PA. AGAIN! For the life of me I still don't remember how the heck that happened.
Will pull over for a break, coffee and gas at Miranda Hills at the Wilco Hess, just off 81. and just shy of Harrisburg which is almost exactly the halfway mark for me. About 370 miles. If I am having a good run I may push it past 400 again.
Right now with about 75% city driving I am just under 38 mpg.
^Bronsin, there are two crazy climbs on this drive, well there are several but these are back to back, the second and less severe is right over the Ohio River climbing up and out entering Ohio westbound. The first, and the only time the Yari has ever downshifted on its own with the CC on is the climb just before that one.
I think it is in Triadelphia, W. VA. westbound, it shocked the hell out of me I thought I was going to stall out on the grade up.
CC comes off before those now.

Yes, it is flat, but the New Jersey portion of the Philadelphia metro is still generally very pretty . The Houston metro (as you know) is pretty flat, and green, as well. I like flat... = better MPG ......and I'll take hurricanes over landslides (my part of the S.F. Bay Area) and earthquakes. Drove back from Columbus yesterday. Here are the numbers for the outbound leg.
738.3 miles
17.1 gals.
43.17 mpg.
Btw- Correction I stop at Manada Hills, not Miranda Hills. It is about the halfway point for this trip. Caught a little traffic just east of Columbus for about 10-15 min, otherwise nothing.
NOW here are the return numbers. I double checked them.
744.5 miles
16.047 gals.
46.39 mpg.
It was warmer, left at noon, Didn't run the A/C. I knew the mileage would be good when I didn't drop the 1st. bar until around 104 miles, 2nd dropped at 176.
I kept the CC on all through NY and CT unlike the previous trip. No traffic delays at all.
This is the best mileage I have ever achieved. What a great little car!
I've got some pics. on my phone of the UltraGauge, Odometer, gas pump etc. Have to download them.
At one point the UltraGauge had my MPG 49.4 lol.
I only use the actual pump numbers, and always stop at the first click.
I am convinced that the ambient temp is the most important factor, at least for me, to get those kind of numbers.
Cheers.

********Just a follow-up**********
I'm not going to start as new thread or comment on another, i'll just follow-up on mine.
My mpg right now, almost all city driving A/C on stop and go, traffic etc. is now at 34.2 mpg.
Just got an oil change 2 weeks ago, with bottle of Techron. Tires at 38 psi.
So there is over a 12 mpg. difference from what I logged in on my most recent trip to Ohio. 12 mpg. difference, and i'm not concerned a wit.
So to all those who feel their mileage is not what it should be, my advice for what it is worth, take it or leave it, is what it is and always has been. Fill up and go for a 4 or 5 hour highway drive with the CC on, and then check your mileage.
cheers,
BTW- I will heading out to OH again in about 6 weeks, and I am so convinced that my mileage like almost everyone else's here is primarily a direct result of ambient temperature and length and type of drive/commute. I probably won't even log my mileage here on my upcoming trip because it has been pretty consistant. Low to mid 40's depending on the temperature, on an automatic.

Same old stuff, 735 miles +/- each way, one stop, halfway point, CC on all the time, get through CT,NY,NJ in the dead of night and based on the temp outside I would be surprised if I wasn't running 40-42 mpg for the first 6 hours or so then 42+ when it warms up outside.

Got back a couple of days ago.
Here are the numbers:
Outbound leg - 40.5 mpg
Return leg - 41.8 mpg
MPG's about what I expected, a little low but it was cold out. I was checking the air intake temps. (it is some of the things I do on 12+ hour drives) as the temps dropped so did the mpg's. The gals./hr. number would increase as the temp dropped.
Odd thing happened just before I left. I was filling up for the trip home and the pump kept clicking off, at 2 gals. at 4 gals, at 5.8 gals, when it got to where I thought it would be full and it clicked I stopped so as not to overfill. Set UltraGauge to full tank, zeroed out the mpg and reset trip computer functions.
Had hoped to get to the Cabelas apprx. 417 miles down the road before I had planned to stop for gas and a bite to eat. Was at 388 miles and had been driving on 2 bars for quite a few miles and decided why chance anything, plus all the clicking at the gas station left me unsure as to whether or not I had actually filled up.
Turns out the UltraGauge was right had apprx 2+ gals. left. Could have easily made it to my pit stop. But again, when in doubt stop and get gas, plus I am not a big fan of driving with that little gas and who knows what other stuff is in the bottom of the tank, etc.
Again, great little car.
Of course the UltraGauge only knows what I plug into it, I just guessed the tank was pretty much full.

Just out of curiosity, does Ohio require a full 'sleeve/seal' around the nozzle? No requirement at all? (I've been to Ohio, but not since 2007 (IIRC), so I don't remember what the pumps look like (California = many sleeves almost made of steel (hard to hold away) and New Mexico (unless changed since 2010) = many, many pumps with no sleeve at all)).
I paid $2.709 gal. for gas a couple of hours ago (Kroger at US 290 and Spring-Cypress Rd -- cheapest in the metro area per Gas Buddy ($2.739 - 3 cent Kroger Card discount). This is the least I've paid for gas in months IIRC off the top of my head.

I drove from Newport, RI to Piscataway, NJ (through Providence, RI and Nyack, NY) on October 24th (late afternoon and night) and there was much highway construction around Providence and in CT. Trying to get as much as possible done before too much inclement weather?. Whenever he got a new Lincoln or Cadillac, he would have the stock horn replaced with one of those aftermarket horns.

Right you are. I toured the Benz factory in Alabama in early October, and the part of the paint process they let the public see is inspiring. I included the percentage of manufacturing time that they devote to the paint job in an earlier post (can't remember the number off the top of my head) and that percentage is significantly larger than any other single part of the manufacturing process. It makes sense that touching up would also require a laser like, detailed focus.

 You live in one of two states where you really can't know FOR CERTAIN how much gas is in the tank after a 'fill up', because you aren't allowed to pump your own gas. Given this (and the nature of the weather there during the winter), your 'erring on the side of extreme caution' approach makes more sense in your area than it might in others.

48 of the 50 U.S. states allow consumers to pump their own gas at the pump at a gas station. Two states do not -- New Jersey and Oregon (and Bronsin lives in New Jersey). I've asked a fair number of people in both states why and I've gotten two answers -- 1. I don't know (which obviously isn't the correct answer ) and 2. Because the decision makers in each of the two state governments don't want to cause unemployment to rise due to the pump attendants losing their jobs (which I understand is the correct answer). Some consumers like this law, and some think it is ridiculous. The people I've talked to who like this law primarily fall into two groups -- one in each state -- with people in Oregon liking it because of the political stance the law represents (they feel that the law is helping the citizens who are employed in these jobs) and supporters in New Jersey feeling the way they do re convenience (not having to get out of the car to pump gas when...it's cold...it's cold and snowing or raining...you are heading to an event where you don't want to have even a hint of the smell of gasoline on you...you are in the middle of christmas shopping...or a number of other reasons).
I think the law is ridiculous. I think it interferes with how a business owner (or corporation) wants to run a private business and how most consumers prefer to obtain the fuel for their vehicles. The impression I get is that most consumers aren't as picky as I am about the controlling the amount and assuring a fill up as I am, they just don't like that they aren't controlling the time expended aspect of the process, without any proven public good (like safety) that has to do with the actual physical operation of the business. I've had a few pump attendants (but zero consumers) tell me that safety is a reason, but I think that is BS (I'd love to see any study/research attempting to assert that point). If safety played a part, and people believed that, I think there would be more than two states out of fifty that would adopt the same requirement. The law also keeps the employee from using that time toward a pursuit that is actually valued by business owners in the marketplace, rather than their employment being forced upon said owners.
Gasoline is cheaper in New Jersey than in the surrounding states (NY, PA, and DE), and my understanding is that this is largely because the gas tax in New Jersey is lower than in surrounding states, and that New Jersey makes up for this by having a much higher cigarette tax, and some other taxes are higher. If I lived in Bergen County, NJ (one of 3 New Jersey counties that shares a northern border with the State of New York), I would drive across the state line into New York to be able to pump my own gas (and pay more per gallon). Living in the New Jersey part of the Philadelphia, PA metro (as Bronsin does) would drive me crazy, not because of the physical surroundings.... Moorestown, Mt. Laurel, and a number of other towns are beautiful.... but because in order to get out of state to be able to pump my own gas I'd have to pay a toll on one of the bridges to cross the river and return .
I don't know what the regulations are, neither at the federal level nor state to state re gasoline containers/canisters. I have a Yaris hatch (so no enclosed trunk) and a gas container wouldn't really fit with what I have stored behind the rear seat and under the package shelf. I have AAA road service and I'm allowed a certain number of calls before they start charging me per call. My Yaris is so reliable that all of my AAA calls within memory (not too many ) have been because I ran out of gas...and AAA brings me gas (part of the cost of my membership).

I would love to be able to pump my own gas! When I was flying I pumped it myself too. The line boys who did it got tips and they worked at the airport to get money for lessons. So it was considered bad form not to let them do it.
Then one day they put Jet fuel in somebodys Bonanza and it crashed on takeoff, lucky no injuries/fatalities. That put a damper on things....
I reconcile myself to somebody else pumping my gas in that they have a job...

I respect your views, I just look at it differently. I used to try to outsmart the attendant by picking a big station, then picking the pump the farthest away from the attendant 'kiosk' and hurrying to start pumping. Some of the times I tried this it worked and the attendant never came out. During my last two trips that included New Jersey, I decided this was too much trouble. Now I get gas right before entering New Jersey, and upon leaving if necessary...just not while I'm there. But I still go to Wawa! I just remembered that one of my AAA calls within memory (see post # 39) was for a dead battery. Not the fault of the battery or my Yaris....I played the radio for too long with the engine off .

That way, I got 115l and saved 23€ - about enough for a half fillup :D
However, I split the action via two stations to reduce the risk of getting caught.
Tobacco is cheaper in Luxemburg, too, but I don't smoke (because I believe the soldering smoke has hurt my lungs enough already) ;)
*In Germany, a single-use-bottle (and since some years even on beer/soda/water cans) deposit has been established a long time ago.
E.g. France or Luxemburg don't have this, I see the result each summer when I'm on holidays in France: lots of empty bottles lying around at the beach and elsewhere.
The downside is that although the deposit system claims to be uniform, lots of stores only have to accept the type of containers they sell.
Returning plastic bottles is no problem anywhere, but the two stores in the suburb where I live don't sell beer etc. in cans, so I have no chance to return the empty cans of the cheap beer I like locally, instead, I have to go down into the city and get it away there.
Of course you can just throw them away, but at a deposit of 0,25€ per container (!), at least I don't do this.
So I buy Energy drink across the border without deposit ;)
This is totally legal (as it is no tax issue); I even started collecting the aluminium cans I emptied at home (at the university, I use to throw them into the bins), but my mum recently visited me and threw them away :frown:

Good for you ! More power to you ! People shouldn't have to go to such lengths to avoid the overreaching hand of government . It wouldn't make sense for me to do that, as gas is pretty inexpensive here...and not really less expensive in any nearby area. To give you an idea how physically large this area is, Greater Houston (Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land --- the 9 county metropolitan area defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget) = 10,062 square miles.....the entire Federal Republic of Germany = 137,847 square miles (conversion = approximately 2.59 square kilometers per square mile). People in the U.S., however, do go out of their way (extraordinarily in the opinion of some) to pay less. I posted in another thread about my ex-girlfriend's parents who take their van down to Portland, Oregon (from a Seattle, Washington suburb) to fill it up with alcohol because there is no sales tax in Oregon (and pick up other items as well). Bronsin lives close to Delaware (no sales tax in Delaware) and it wouldn't take too large a purchase for him to justify the gas and bridge toll.

*Bump*
With recent trip numbers
Just back from trip out to Ohio. Outbound leg 42.73 mpg. 744 miles/One stop.
Return leg 43.97 mpg. 742+ miles. One stop and a huge ( 1 hour 20 min delay for night roadwork in around Westport CT.)
Reset the UltraGauge when I stopped for gas at 418 miles. I really believe that but for the delays in CT. could have been a 500 mile plus tank. or damn close.
First long trip on the Hankook's @ 36 psi, much stiffer ride than the stocks at 38 psi.
Question for those in PA., off the turnpike, do any of those 6 wind turbines ever turn? I have never, I mean never, never ever, seen one of those turning. BTW- I like the Yoko billboard, lol.

[B]( 1 hour 20 min delay for night roadwork in around Westport CT.)
A report was released recently (by the White House, IIRC) that stated CT has the worst roads of any state. I've driven in every state except HI and AK (now with my Yaris as well), and in CT I've driven in Brandon, Enfield, Vernon, Manchester, Hartford, New Haven, Mystic, Danbury, Greenwich, the area around Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, and a fair number of other towns, as well as on I-95, I-91, I-84, and the Wilbur Cross/Merritt. If memory serves me, I've always had a pretty positive opinion (in general) about the roads in CT.....that those high taxes are going for something besides public employee pensions....jk...sort of . I can't say I've had quite as rosy an opinion about the roads in Ohio.

Reviving this thread because I am out to Ohio this week same stuff, put the snows on this past weekend. Fresh off an oil change and bottle of Techron.
Will log the miles and see how the old egg does after 5/6 years. As always, expecting 40-42mpg outbound, running at night at colder temps. Will be nice to fill up for $25.
Just under 60k on the car.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you! Drive safe!
