View Full Version : 2013 Vios - Let's hope Toyota brings it to N. America

I know leaked images were posted someone on here a little while back, can't find where. But here are nice official photos.

Officially launched a few weeks ago at the Bangkok auto show (apparently the biggest market for the Vios).

Looks really good. Toyota NEEDS to bring this over as the new Yaris sedan (2014?). Nearly everyone offers a subcompact sedan, it makes no sense that Toyota, the world's largest automaker, would ignore the segment in America after they have sold well here in the past. They shouldn't leave Corolla as the only sedan choice at the small end as it continues to get bigger.

And clearly the Yaris Liftback has had very mediocre sales in it's first year and a half. Americans buy more sedans.

Interior is a huge upgrade.

Notice that unlike the 2nd gen Vios/Vitz/Yaris duo, the sedan and hatch share nothing except some mechanicals. Totally different interiors.

Yea, Toyota quite selling the sedan because it sold more than the liftback.

I can see you are Toyota's executive management team!

You are an idiot. That isn't what he is saying at all.

Personally I like the looks of the interior...nice refresh. Not so sure about the exterior as it is a mash up of other autos in their line up and even other manufacturers. Only time will tell.

Yeah, I did say in general that sedans sell far better than hatches in America.

As for Yaris, from 2007 though the introduction of the 5-door hatch, the sedan and hatch sold 50/50. Once there were two hatch styles, they began to outsell the sedan.

In my area, Yaris sedans outnumber hatches at least 4-1. Not sure why.

I drove a 2013 5-dr hatchback as my rental car when I was in Indianapolis last week. I absolutely hated the speedometer being on the driver's side. I'm sad to see the new sedan is moving to that again too. I think it being in the center makes it unique.

Same in my area. I see way more sedans. It is probably 6 - 1 around here.

one reason why they may keep it out is cos its to close in price with the Corolla , Yaris is great as a basic transportation in base or LE model. SE is at same price as a loaded Corolla in which case is a no brainier. Most ppl will buy Corolla its what we see at my place, the hb Yaris is to attract younger crowed... compete with Mazda 2 and little Ford.
So if you want a sedan get a Corolla ..bigger motor more room and so on.

Just my 2 cents

PS what i like about the new hb Yaris is that its all the same under , easy to work on and fun to drive brings out the kid in me :) love my 07 but next will be a newer Yaris two door black ...may even ger AC with it lol and power windows haha

Not sure why Toyota is stalling the advancement in engine and transmission tech in the low end of their cars including the current gen Corolla - 4 speed auto? Come on Toyota. Should of been a 5-speed 5 years ago. Should be a 6-speed in the 2014 model.

No doubt it's one of the reasons the 3rd gen Yaris hatch has slow sales. People expect a 40mpg EPA number in these cars and Toyota missed the chance.

That was reportedly Toyota's reasoning when it was announced that the sedan was being dropped from the US. They want to sell you a Corolla no doubt. For most buyers, it makes sense, but some would like the choice of buying a smaller and bit more affordable sedan. Toyota sold a lot of Yaris sedans after all.

Problem with Toyota's strategy here is that most competitors now offer a sub-compact sedan. Fiesta, Sonic, Accent, Rio, Versa...

Most importantly, it's not like Toyota is saving money on not building a subcompact sedan. It's being built, they just need to ship it here with slight modifications to meet US specs. There's only money to be made.

How 'bout a C.V.T. ? Didn't mind it with the PRIUS we had . Test drove a '12 SUZUKI SX-4 and had plenty of pep . A 5 speed auto would be a nice feature . The 5 speed auto of the '11 FIT coasts / glides very well . Does more hunting when climbing hills . Can be a bit annoying . A trade off .

Yeah, I have no clue what Toyota is thinking. 4-spd gear boxes are not good for performance or fuel efficiency, imo.

Personally I agree with you. I love having the center with exception to backseat speed police being able to be on top of your gauge all the time. Thing is that the bulk of the folks out there for one reason or another are scared of that type of change yet they don't mind having their eyeballs plastered to the 7" Nav screens in the center as well....

 , you're right about backseat police . When my mother goes with us she eyes it like a hawk and lets me know if over the speed limit . Drives me :bonk: ers . Will have to throw a blanket over it . We were adapted to the center console in a day . Like things that are different . It is cheaper to use old tech. Toyota earns very little selling these vehicles in the US. Almost no one would buy a $20k Yaris in the US, yet they can get that with all sorts of options overseas, because gas mileage is more important over there.

Toyota is going to need to move production of the Yaris outside of Japan, at least for those sold in the west. There's too much cost cutting needed now just to offer the Yaris in the US. Building them in Mexico probably makes the most sense. Of course, that all depends on which existing plant could facilitate that. If they are going to invest billions in a new plant, that plant will have to build a lot more than just Yaris's.

Did they hire any of the old NUMMI workers? A guy I lost touch with has a little brother who was planning to become a LEO. While he was in school, he knocked up his girlfriend. Her father was an executive at the NUMMI plant. They married and her father got him a job at the NUMMI plant. The last time I saw the little brother, I asked him if he was still planning on becoming an LEO. He said no....that with overtime he was making more money than he would in law enforcement (and his wife was pregnant with their third child at the time). When the big changes started happening, I kept an eye on that news for quite a bit of time (mostly from out of state).

One of the things I like most about the USDM, etc. 3rd Gen 5-door hatch is that that small second window (that is easier to break than a larger one) was eliminated from the rear passenger doors. This puts a small window right back in the mix. Idiotic.

Me? I'm not a huge fan of the Vios sedan, personally. Just my two cents.

And as far as the four-speed gearbox thing goes, I don't really get the big deal. Yaris still gets mileage that is on par with its competition. Plus, using a "parts bin" transmission allows Toyota to keep costs down, not to mention it's proven technology.

The Yaris is still competitive with regards to performance among the segment. So why does it need another gear if it's fuel economy and performance are at the levels of other cars with five- and six-speed automatics?

I like the interior of the new sedan. Like some others said, the sedan is a lot more common around here than the hatch, but both are fairly prominent. It's rare I go a day without seeing at least 2 Yarii on the road.

I just don't like how newer cars look in general. To me it's just like every auto maker out there is making the same car. I miss the 90s/early 00s when there was a pretty wide variance in how vehicles looked. All the USDM muscle car things might as well be the same car, and every sedan/hatch anyone makes might as well be the same car. What happened to unique styling?

This subject makes me think about the drveway where my aunt and uncle live. They live in a high end country club community. My uncle is a good friend of the original developer and the developer let him pick out the lot he and my aunt wanted. Most of the original layout of the golf course was on flat land, with a few holes and a couple of dozen homes up a bit on a steep hill. The golf holes on the hill cut accross the side of the hill and the uphill side was barren land (filled in by houses and continuation of the streets many years later. My aunt and uncle live at the end of a long driveway that cuts across the hill just as the golf holes do. The driveway is the first driveway on the left after one starts up the steep hill. One of the golf holes is along the uphill side of the driveway and the 5 houses before my aunt and uncle's house are along the left side of the driveway. Those 5 houses look out on the street below and then more houses and more of the golf course beyond that. My aunt and uncle's house has a slight bit of the same view the other 5 do, but mostly looks onto the golf course (as it is on the golf course) and a perfectly centered view of one of tallest mountains in the SF Bay Area.

My aunt and uncle have lived there for decades and I lived within 10 miles of them for most of my life before movings to Texas. The neighbors are thus well aware of where I am going. I've also visited many times in the last 6-7 years, so the neighbors are well aware of my Yaris...................................I don't know if the 5 neighbors along the driveway resent anyone connected with the best located house at the end or if they think a Yaris is too plebian to be in their midst, but almost invariably (I'M GOING MY USUAL 'SO SLOW I'm about to stall' (maybe 5-7 MPH) with my stereo off as well) if any neighbors are standing in a personal driveway chatting when I drive by, one of the members of the group will stop and make a HAND MOTION FOR ME TO SLOW DOWN........:rolleyes:....and it isn't a 55+ community.

I hate that. And those stupid yellow 'slow down' signs. I actually stopped the car and screamed and some one that did that to me. You should have seen that person, they never expect someone of my stature to climb out of the Yaris. It makes for wonderful reactions.

You're right, that would be fun (in an anonymous situation). In that particular situation I just endured because if I did otherwise, my aunt would have been mortified. She is a dear, sweet person who treats me (in very good ways) more like a second son than a nephew (my departed mother was her sister and only sibling).

I know what you mean about people not expecting a tall, substantial guy to get out of a small car. I don't get that as much with my Yaris as I did with the last generation (2001) Suzuki Swift I had before my Yaris. I've never had anyone say anything about the Yaris being a clown car, but I did hear that term when I had my Swift.
