Driving car at 75mph on position 3 :(

Yesterday, I drove the Yaris Sedan to airport. On the way home, my friend on the passenger seat touched the transmission shift from position "D" to "3". But I didn't notice that and the engine noise is very loud because I was driving at 75 mph. When we got home, I realized that I had been driving the car on "3" for 3 hours!!

Is it really bad for my car???

No, not bad at all....worse case you wasted some gas. I suppose one could argue that driving like this is harded or places more stress on the car, but I doubt you did any damage...you're just out some $$ on gas that didn't have to be burnt.

I routinely move the AT selector from D to 3 to engine-brake the car's speed. I'm careful to be mindful of the speed of the car, as doing so going too fast for a lower gear can kick up the RPM's.

I routinely engine-brake from D to 3, then 3 to 2 conditions depending.

No harm to your AT, to be sure, assuming you do it right.

I never understood this. If you want the ability to engine brake, buy a manual! Putting extra wear on your expensive, complicated auto tranny isn't worth it! Brake pads are cheaper!

My buddy has this early 90's escort that is a total heap, but it only has 60,000 miles. Engine and everything is pristine, but the body is shot. Typical Ohio car. Its an auto. When I got my Yaris and started playing with it, he would ride with me and I would be shifting from gear to gear. He must have had race car envy. :rolleyes: Low and behold a week later he started engine braking with his auto tranny. Now, his car sits in his yard. Tranny problems. I'll let you guys know when I'm done laughing at him.

Brake pads are WAY CHEAPER! Just use brakes! Auto or manual, just use brakes...

Sorry friend but you're out of touch with the realities of auto-tranny's sir....even Toyota suggest engine braking, and it shows in the Yaris 2007 LB owners manual.

I've owned many, many AT cars domestic and foreign, and after 100's of thousands of miles driven with engine braking, NEVER a transmisison problem. Never. Your friend's Ford Escort is a piece of sheet, and not representative of using engine-braking with a decent car. I just left a Ford Mustang for the Yaris and let me tell you that Ford produces a crap product...but that's another thread....lol

The Toyota AT in the Yaris is near bullet proof, and using the engine to slow the car down is NOT going to harm the transmission in ANY way unless one does it wrong, like dropping into 2nd gear at 75 or something crazy, but then that is also true with manual cars too.

The "brake pads are cheaper" thinking only is true if you drive a sheet car with a sheet tranny....this thinking does not apply to Honda's nor Toyota's and this is perhaps true with all Japanese products. With a Toyota AT, you can save your brakes and NOT at the expense of a big Tranny repair bill.....you can have it both ways.

My 2003 Expedition drove great...fantastic really, with it's rear independent suspention, but it was not reliable....at 10,000 miles the rear differential had to be replaced, at 13,000 driver side window motor went out, at 19,000 miles the power stearing went out, at 26,000 miles the tranny started leaking....then I replace it with a 2006 Mustang, and it had even more problems....It was a happy day I got the Yaris....it's back to Japanese cars for me

Its called rev matching. Can't do that in an auto. Does the Yaris auto tranny do it for you?

No need for rev matching with an automatic. The torque converter has enough play to buffer the differences between the motor speed and the tranny speed...it's fluid driver after all...the lock up torque converted is disengaged at this point. The net effect of engine-braking is a decrease in car travel speed, and this saves on brake pads, but not at the cost of transmission damage.

I can't believe you Chino! And you call yourself one of us. You should know you can't ever compare a Toyota to a Ford. You break my heart and have forced me to question every post you've ever made. You don't deserve your Yaris regardless of transmission type... Just kidding Biotch! But, I have to say that engine braking with an auto does no harm to it, however, yes it is easier and more effective with a manual.

I hope the auto works fine downshifting and such....I just remember all the MR2 Spyders and the troubles with their auto sequentials. I like my Yaris so downshifting will be minimal for me thanks....driving in 3rd should be fine up to the rev limit.
