Not sure if this is just for China, or will be coming to the US/EU in a short while. By the time production will be ready, the current Yaris/Vitz will be 4 years old, a little short of a model cycle, but remember that the 3rd Gen isn't much different from the 2nd gen.

"TMC World Premieres New Vehicles and Concepts at Shanghai Auto Show

Shanghai, China, April 20, 2013—Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) unveiled the new "Yaris" hatchback here today at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, which will run from today through April 291. The new Yaris and the new "Vios" sedan—also on display—are production versions of global-strategic concept models that TMC first displayed at last year's Beijing Motor Show. Production and sales in China of both vehicles are scheduled to start at the end of this year.

Two world premiere concepts—to be sold exclusively in China—are also on display at the show: the "Yundong Shuangqing II"2, a concept equipped with a hybrid system currently under development at the Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing (China) Co., Ltd. R&D Center in Changshu, China, and the "Toyota FT-HT Yuejia" 3, a six-seater concept developed to appeal to young Chinese consumers.

The Toyota-brand booth at this year's Shanghai Motor Show is its largest ever, with an area of approximately 4,600 square meters and a record total of 52 production vehicles and concepts on display.

At a press conference during the exhibition, TMC Vice Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada reflected on Toyota's history in China: "Toyota exported its first 'Toyota Crown' to China in 1964. Since then, for 50 years, Toyota has constantly interacted with its Chinese customers and partners and pondered deeply about what it should do to be of service to the country of China." Uchiyamada went on to remark that Toyota began production of the Prius in China in 2005, which was the first time the Prius was produced outside of Japan. Uchiyamada closed by reaffirming Toyota's continued commitment to China: "Over the next 50 years, we, as the 'China Toyota' firmly rooted in this country, will work closely together and do our best to be of service to the development of China, to local society and to our customers."

TMC aims to continue producing ever-better cars—ranging from environment-friendly vehicles to specially equipped vehicles to sports cars—to meet the needs of a broad range of vehicle users in China."

I don't like it. I think it looks like some strange combination of Matrix, Ford Fiesta, and Ford Focus.

Glad I found my 2013 Red Coupe - It is perfect & I'll have it for years. This one looks like it is longer (at least the hood) :iono:

looks like an updated matrix

why?

unless it comes with a brand new engine and transmission combo with all new tech that can get 50 mpg on gas alone, it is just another lump of metal that is behind the times.

looks like an updated matrix

its what it might be since the Matrix is being dropped from Toyota line..this just might be the replacement a larger Yaris.
Looks ok, kind of like the lexus 300 wagon ...but really now if they make the car bigger than what is the point is Toyota to pull out of making sub compact cars?

Ugly. The Yaris is the new Matrix. I like the third generation much better, over the second and the forth, it's has the look that isn't desperate either.

I've noticed Yaris owners getting more respect on the roads, compared to Hyundai and Kias yet again can those two cars really compare :)

Well, we got a new Yaris for the 2012 model year. I can't imagine this is going to come here after just two model years. My guess is this is a Yaris for the Chinese market only.

I'm not a fan of the growing size either. That might not be the north american yaris though, if it even arrives on north american shores, since toyota is suppose to have a partnership with mazda (http://blog.caranddriver.com/next-generation-mazda-2-and-a-subcompact-toyota-to-be-produced-at-mazdas-mexican-plant/) to build the next subcompact for both (presumably the next 2 & yaris).

now that would be interesting if it really happened.

+2 . Had a FORD Festiva back in the '90s . The 1.3 ltr. is a tough cookie . Also had a MAZDA Protege' sedan with the 1.5 ltr., that engine was only out for a year if I remember correctly . Had lots of head and leg room . So , would be a good combo for longevity .

At this rate my next car will just end up being a Nissan.

I like the styling to be honest...I know its a bit longer but I grew to love alot of different cars...I think it could be something hot in the States but I know for sure there gonna change a lot of the styling before they ever bring them to the States. I just wished they brought the RS Yaris's out to the states along with the Ford Focus ST and RS

The color is pretty sweet, but I want bolder. I'm a sucker for color and that has been my biggest gripe with Toyota; it is all shades of gray with a splash of orange or red mixed in. MOPAR/FIAT is all over color variety and Ford is joining the trend. C'mon Toyota, make it happen. Styling-wise, that Yaris is looking a bit long. Seems hard to imagine that that production wouldn't eat away Corolla sales, or vice versa.

this is not a china-only car, rather this is a smaller yaris which will compete in the ecocar segment in thailand (governemnt's deal=smaller tax but must comply with emissions and has at least 20km/L, etc.)

http://motorspices.com/blog/this-is-it-toyota-yaris-eco-car-version/2013_04_20_toyota_yaris_chinese_2/

in the philippines, it is to compete with the hyundai eon, mitsubishi mirage and other sub-subcompact cars--if it even makes it to our shores. either that or the 3rd gen yaris will, as they will tend to eat each other's sales.

Fail. :barf:
I can't believe they can't get their crap together anymore. WTF is up with those weird faux volvo tails?
So disappointing... OTOH the interiors aren't so bad I guess... Still no center console, though.

With a tiny bit of Mazda 3 hatchback DNA too. X_X

Ahhh..I'm sure you guys will grow into the style one day. Look at the 3rd gen. When it first came out, everybody was bashing the style. Now that it is out, it seems like more and more people are liking the new changes. I guess we'll see....

I kind of like it , because it looks sportier, longer and lower. But that may mean a heavier car with less economy . I wonder if they plan to go with the CVT transmission, like in the Corolla, for 40mpg economy . The face is an improvement over the 2015- 2016 . I also read somewhere that the next Yaris might be made jointly with Mazda.

Having driven all three generations of Yaris a fair bit, I am still strongly of the opinion that the 3rd generation version sucks compared to the 2nd.

And I have also driven all 3 versions and I think the 15-16 is a huge improvement, specifically the seat comfort and the much softer materials on the interior. My 11 Yaris felt like a compromise. And the manual in the 15/16 is also an improvement. But it certainly isn't as slick as a Honda manual.

The stock L (and possibly the LE) trim perhaps doesn't really shine brighter versus the stock 2nd generation, but the 3rd Gen SE is a step up in almost every way really. Personally, I like them all - but the 3rd Gen SE is my favorite (USA) incarnation.

Though, I have to admit that ern-diz's modified black/black 2nd Gen is pretty sexy...

The 3rd gen Yaris is very sluggish and wallowey compared to the earlier versions, and lacks their crisp, immediate feel. The design of the new dashboard looks like it came out of an old 1970s GM pickup - oversized for a small car and lacking all the handy storage compartments its predecessors have. The radio head unit has a pretty weird user interface too. This might not be a bad car, but it just doesn't stack up relative to the ones that came before it.

That model replaced the Japan made 3rd genenertaion here in Panama, now is imported from Thailand and we have both the hatchback and the new sedan (Vios derived).
The new model is selling well beacuse is bigger and longer (also heavier), when I bough mine in the auto show, people complained about the 3rd gen price vs. size.
I donīt get it, the Yaris has always been a sub-compact, but the market wanted bigger cars even if they are less safe and (1 or none airbag are typical in major brands) and donīt have the Toyota reliability.
The design is diferent from the others Toyota models and the cues are more from emerging markets cars like the Etios, is not a bad car but I prefer the global Yaris (Vitz).I suppose that this decision respond to Toyota Corporation Japan from a economic standpoint (currency exchange), logistics, etc.

Edit: The new ones model come with the classic 1NZ-FE and 2NZ-FE, but there is a sticker in the sedan gas cap that indicates only "95 octane", my car (2NZ-FE) uses 91 octane gasoline without issues.

I think this body style is amazing. It just seems to be more proportionate which is something all Yaris models in the past seemed to lack. Finally they move away from the egg shape.

I've seen a lot of them, when I was on vacation in Thailand last year...and...they just don't look that good.

They look really cheaply produced when you look closely...
