They're both good but I believe Japan (generally speaking) has had the upper edge. Both are good in their own right but I think Japanese cars exceed in most area's. Of course its bias to whether you like import or domestic.
P.S. I'd becareful about this kind of subject, it can be touchie and a domestic vs. Import war. Hold the flamming down!

Something to think about is, not who has the technology, but who is using it.

Oh so f'n true.
The US military is a decade ahead of anything you see on any consumer market. That fact helps me sleep at night.
Is this a trick question or can patriotism really blind people that badly? :)

your right about the US military equipment... their advanced, well... after WWII  lets just take drive by wire for example... they've been using those from back in the 70's and GPS from back in 89-91 "not sure" also there's the internet from NASA remember those videos from "the moon"???
but for the general public, military technology will only be available after like 30+years... unless they declassify the technology, only then will it be available for consumer/manufacturer use...

whats crazy about auto manufacturing is that people are all gung-ho about buying domestic vehicles, but soo many "american" cars arent even made in america anymore. i believe ford's fusion and other cars is made in mexico, and a bunch of chrysler cars are made in canada. meanwhile, japanese cars, like the camry, are being made here. i could really care less about "patriotism" when it comes to buying a car, cuz when it all comes down to it, it's all about dollars and cents...

Actually, the Germans are most often behind....Mercedes, BMW, Audi, VW, they have one of the worse dependability records of any make, often American cars show better dependability.
The Japanese DO NOT have better technology...why they make better cars then the US is not better technology, but because the US auto makers are heavily saddled with retiree's pensions, retirement funds, medical costs for old workers retired, that sort of thing...this massive "tax" per car sold is preventing the US makers from better quality-control, so they cut corners, just to survive. The Japanese have a much fatter profit margin then US makers, as they're not saddled with retiree and pensioner costs...plus the Unions in the States are killing profit for Ford, GM, and Chyrsler....to their detriment.
The US is not short of brains, nor technology....what holds them back are the massive costs that the Japanese do not have. The Japanese have more $$ for research & development, innovation, and testing...Ford, Chyrsler and GM are fighting to survive and so have little $$ to spare.
As for job security (some mentioned this earlier)...the US makers do not do a shit job for job security...this is stupid...how is putting out a shit product going to give you job security? If anything it will threaten US jobs, not secure them...if anyone has job security it is the Japanese, because as long as they make the best cars, they will have a job to build them.

Something to think about in regard to Patriotism:
Who is not patriotic?
The American buying a car made in Japan?
Or the American working making a shit product here?
It is VERY American to own the best regardless of country of origin. It is UN-American to make a shit product.
Ford, GM, and Chrysler are very UN-American for this reason.
And me, and many of you Americans that have bought a Japanese car...who could blame us? Did we let American industry down, or did they let us down?

Europe and the States are great at inventing stuff - the Japanese are superb, really superb, at adapting and improving what Europe and the States invent. Needless to say, this makes them able to sell more and better than the originators. It was once said by someone wiser than I (can't remember who, in other words) that America does not suffer from a Trade Gap, it suffers from a Design Gap. The rest of the world is just not interested in things designed for inch-sized wrenches, and designed to wear out 2 seconds after a stupid-short warranty has expired. Americans themselves are getting pretty sick of "just-barely-good-enough" design and engineering.
Rant off.

Well, that's new to me.
Keep in mind that "not shiny and cool looking" does not translate into "way behind."
your americans right???
no. ^__^;;
i'm obviously completely biased.
but with all the talk of european cars, i prefer british over german, italian, etc.

Lets get one thing straight...American car companies would make great cars if they wanted to. This has everything to do with the people up top that run the company, they have chosen this culture of mediocrity, not the workers. The workers do the best they can with what they are given. If the companies had thier shit together, then they could swing the pensions and medical AND build good cars too, workers benefits are not dragging them down......This is just mismanagement by CEO's who seem to have only a passing interest in producing automobiles and more interest in letting things stagnate while they live the good life.
