I almost hit a coyote on the way to work last fall and thought to myself, "Boy, this would spell doomsday for the GhostTurd."
I did this with the following tools: Drill, welder, chopsaw, angle grinder, plasma cutter (although you could get by with other), and of course, paint.
It is very solid, supported at 4 points. I'm new to this site but have done several fun modifications to the car to make it more comfortable and safe to drive.
If there is a lot of interest in the cattle guard, I can post some more pictures and explanations.
Curious to see how it turned out. Post some pics

Definitely post pics. There has been quite a bit of interest on doing something like that.

I hit one of those damn things in my Yaris. It broke the lower grill and cracked the bumper cover below the lower grill. I also had to replace a handful of those little push-pin retainers.
It was a lot less damage than I expected. I was running 60mph at the time.
C'mon man, you can't breeze in, make a post like that, then not present pictures! Boo!!

I hit a giant jack rabbit, this would have saved me...

I'd posted this in the tech section but thought it could benefit someone here. I nearly hit a coyote one morning with the Ghost Turd so this was the solution. It took about 45 hours start-to-finish and is very solid.

OK, pics.... How do you upload pictures when the 'Insert Image' icon wants you to point to a URL? (help...)

You can either upload to a file hosting site like Photobucket or there should be an another option to add the pic as an attachment to the thread in the "advanced" menu.
I use photobucket...

Now put some big round foglights in the cattle guard and make it look like a rally car. :burnrubber:

All of the bends are done with a chopsaw, welder & angle grinder. Tedious.
The trickiest part is building your grommet mounts. You have to buy slightly longer metric bolts with which to replace the bumper mounting bolts because your grommets (what you see sticking out of the plastic bumper cover) have a 1/4" base that require more bolt shank. I just used a generic holesaw & drill to get the 2nd bumper hole made (the driver side). The passenger hole is already there for your tow hookup.
If someone is really serious about building one, I can put the car back on the rack and take some pictures of the underside for the lower supports. Without solid under-support, this would only be for decoration.

I am very impressed with the fabrication technique for achieving the bend. Some serious work went into that.

I've contemplated this once or twice, but I'm not sure how I'd go about anchoring the lower portion of it. I think I would go with mandrel bent round tubing attached to square/rectangular uprights, like on a police cruiser. Since I'm not skilled with a welder and don't have a mandrel bender, it's just going to be a pipe dream for me.
That, and there's probably some interference with pedestrian crash safety regulations. =(

Just put some nerf padding on there and it'll pass.
