Yep.. thats right. On the way to work this morning, a deer decided it had enough and decided suicide was the only way out. He picked my car of course.

More details to come and pictures. If it gets totalled, I have all my OEM parts so i will be swapping everything back to OEM before they take it away. weather I get another yaris or not is still in the air...

So pissed right now.

Apparently we didn't kill enough of those little douchebags this year. I've seen a crapton of them on the roads around here lately.

Some pictures of the damage.

From what I can see, passenger side headlamp assembly has broken tabs,

The front support is bent along with whatever it bolted to it.

Pass fender is kinked.

busted windshield

Busted Bumper

pulls slightly to the left now. :iono: But not horribly. just noticeable.

Engine still runs. No leaking anything.

Soo.. If Garm is reading this... I may be in the market for an aftermarket front bumper and support bracket now.. I wont know anything til I talk with the insurance guy and see what he quotes.

If they want to total it I'd definitely see about buying the car back and fixing it anyway. Even on a salvage title that car is in too good of condition to throw away.

Somewhere on the side of the road. If I find it, you can have it. lol

Yea, I think I am more pissed of at the fact I just bought new tires for autocross this weekend. Now I wont be able to run it. I haven't done autocross in 2 months and its eating me alive. Gotta wait til weds to get an estimate and see if they will cut me a check or I will have someone else fix it. If the price is right I may just do it myself.

Finally talked to the adjuster. He quoted me $2,595 as of right now. May cost more after they tear it down and check more stuff. I got a $500 deductable.

I could get a MicroImage vented hood $150 and an aftermarket from bumper off ebay which is about $300 shipped. I do understand most of those will require work to fit correctly. Need new Headlights anyways so i could go with new 06-08 headlights.

I would have to talk to the guys who are doing the work. Not sure if I want to get them to just cut me a check or let professionals do it...

If I were you I would take the car to a few local body shops and get bids you can probally buy some aftermarket upgrade parts like you wanted and in the end have money in your pocket lefover to cover your deductable so you pay nothing if you have them write you a check. Just keep in mind if you do that and then the body shop doing the work finds something that the adjuster didnt its more of a hassle then if you go to one of the insurance designated body shops. However in my experience and familys experience the insurance designated body shops tend to do a mediocer job not real good but not real bad either. They use them because they are cheaper. A lot of times they used used bumpers refurbished parts sometimes body lines dont line up perfectly or paint isnt a perfect match. They dont blend the paint. '

So either way its still not a bad idea to have a high quality body shop look at it one that you know has good reviews or referral from a friend.

That is not an unreasonable quote, but you could pocket some money or do some extra upgrades by doing it yourself. All of the damaged areas are bolt-ons, so there is no tin knocking required to rebuild her.

^ yea, I think the only down fall to do it my self is that the only other car I got is a Rav4 that has a transmission that has problems shifting from 1st to 2nd and sometimes 2nd to 3rd. Runs fine other than that.

I will weigh my options and make a decision tomorrow. Will go around a few good body shops and get some quotes also. I think the most expensive and wide range cost would be getting it painted.

ilikerice
05-08-2013, 03:23 PM
quick update. Just got email back from Toyota Collision body shop I went to yesterday to get an estimate. They quoted $3,491... $1,534 in parts, rest is labor and misc supplies. $739 in body labor, $563 in paint labor and $136 in glass labor.

If it only cost $1,500 in parts from a dealer.. looks like I may do this myself.. gonna check one other shop today after work.

yeppers, its going to the body shop this weekend and they will start working on it monday. found out that my friend who owns a body shop is now doing insurance jobs. He will be doing the work, he painted my rear bumper and side skirts. So I think I will be getting that vented fiber glass hood and new front bumper to match the rest of my body kit.

Does the front fascia only have the one tear (driver side upper corner of grill)?

It looks like it is fixable (plastic welded and bodyworked) for less than $300.

ilikerice
05-11-2013, 02:18 PM
Yea. Just the tear. I'm actually gonna keep the damaged front bumper and get the bumper latches for the front like I do for my rear bumper. I will be able to swap bumpers at the autocross event now and still be in stf class. The vented bumpers and vented hood puts me in SMF class.

While I was growing up, my grandparents lived in an area that was a few miles from a four lane road. After leaving the 4 lane road, the road to their house was windy, with a golf course on both sides most of the way. One day, while I was there for a visit, I heard a knock on the front door. I answered the front door, and it was the dad from the family next door. He had one of those old, old Pontiac Bonneville station wagons. That thing was a tank. He was knocking on the door because he was driving home (on that road that splits the golf course) and a huge buck (deer) ran right in his path while exiting a fairway. TOTALED that big tank station wagon. The neighbor walked away without a scratch.

ilikerice, glad to hear you're okay!

Deer are a constant concern here too. But yesterday I was on I-15, doing my usual 60 mph, and some yahoo pulling a open trailer full of crap (moving or going to the dump, couldn't tell) had a LazyBoy blow out right in front of me. I was far enough behind by chance so by the time I passed the chair it was stopped, never a problem for me but sure could have been! It stopped right on the dotted line between lanes so not an immediate hazard to others, rather then stop and deal with it myself I called 911 as the trooper barracks was only a half mile away and they got the flashers etc.
While I had the 911 op on the horn, I had exited and as it happened, pulled up along the still clueless trailer puller. " Here's his license number, he'll be driving by the barracks in about a minute". Sneaky yeah, but damn he needs a heads up on securing his frigging load!

I love the feeling of 'freedom/less regulation/trying things just to see if they'll work' in states like Texas and Idaho (as opposed to a 'different' () feeling in California and some of the northeastern states), but the scenario you witnessed is one downside to the former.

I hit a deer at NIGHT doing 60 down a dark highway. Never saw it. It took out the front drivers light ,hood and the whole side of the car. the drivers door window exploded but the tints held it together.
The damage was MUCH more than what you show and I was able to get the whole door, hood, headlight door glass at the boneyard. looks like an easy fix. My car was a 1989 Isuzu IMark RS hatchback with handling by Lotus. Same engine as the Lotus Elise minus the Turbo...

Deer would come into my backyard in California quite often. Not a nuisance. Only nuisance = Blue Jays getting 'drunk' off Pyracantha berries and dying (loud thud) flying into windows.

NEW UPDATE.. Got the car torn town from the body shop and adjuster came to look everything over again. Apparently there is alot more damage under the hood than they could have seen until they got the hood off. SOO, new price now is $4700 worth of damage..

Will be ordering new C-One replica front bumper and vented fiberglass hood from Garm today..

OK. So I am suppose to pick up my car up today. Small issue. I was told this bumper needed 06-08 headlights so I repeated this info to the body shop. Well, they don't fit correctly. But the 09-11 headlights do. Will find out if later if he is able to send those back for the newer ones. If not I may have to try and sell and buy new ones or if someone is willing to trade. We will see what happens. Right now the old projectors will fit but a few tabs are broken so they kind of rattle a bit he said.

Toyota sells replacement tabs that screw onto the headlights. If you looks by the tabs you will see the screw holes.

Two of the three tabs are replaceable - The top tab and the inside lower tab.

Part numbers for 09-11 headlights:

Top tab left: 81194-52080
Top tab right:81193-52080

Lower Inside tab left:81196-52050

ok, Good news and bad news.

Bad news, the aftermarket projector headlights do not come with detachable clips. Its all one piece.

Good news, the body shop doesn't know what they are talking about. The 06-08 headlights do fit this front bumper, its just not perfect.

Bad news. Somehow the part where the hood latch is doesn't seem to be correct. The ends where the headlight screws down into do not line up. off by an inch. So the only thing that is holding the headlights in are the 1 screw up top in the fender and the front bumper pushing against those taps on the bottom of the headlight. Works fine for now. No rattling and was still able to adjust the headlights to make them even.

Other bad news but knew about it. The hood and the bumper line up in the center but on the outside edges near the headlights there is a huge gap about 1/2 inch big. I think I could probably get the bumper to poke up a bit with some spacers and clips. in the mean time it is what it is.

OK, so the radiator support was not the problem. compared to another hatch and they are the same. then looked at my friends sedan and saw that yes, they are different.

Now, @CTscott, The following picture. Am I missing a piece that goes to the oem headlight that screws into place? is there a part that suppose to link the two together?

OR if anyone else has a picture of their headlamp where they meet up with the radiator support, please take a picture of that for me please.

ok. Still trying to figure this out.. Can someone please take pictures of their front bumper support and how their headlights are mounted to the radiator support. Also, please specify what year your yaris is, 3dr only please.

The OEM headlights from an 06-08 do not mount to my radiator support. BUT my HID 09-11 headlights do... I ordered new brackets but they are welded to the side support. I would have to cut and drill but I still don't think they would work.

From everything I have read, both 06-08 and the 09-11 yaris headlights are interchangeable and will bolt straight up. So why are these two headlights different just where they meet up with the bracket.

These pictures have better understanding of what I am dealing with.

Please someone throw me a bone on why this isn't working. Either I am going to have to go back to a stock front bumper and trade my 06-08 headlights for 09-11 headlights OR maybe I can just buy new side radiator support brackets from a 06-11 yaris.

Your front bumper looks OK from the photos; no creases. I had a woman run into the back of my hatchback while she was trying to swat a mosquito on her windshield. She creased and stretched the plastic. Most new bumpers ship in primer black.
I missed a black bear this past fall by its whisker.

Coulda been worse.

I'd bought a Suzuki-clone Chinese scooter for commuting, three years ago...I've had a satchel of problems with it, but fuel economy was not one of them. 80 mpg and highway speeds...great commuter bike.

Until I hit a deer last May.

No, didn't go down. But look at a Suzuki Burgman 400...that's what my ride basically WAS. All that plastic fairing...and the whole front area was demolished. Much of it was molded one-piece sections that wrapped over both sides; and EVERYTHING was destroyed to the frame. Both the external and the glovebox molding.

I'm trying to strip it down and run the frame with a seat...think, Honda Ruckus. But deer...let's just put it this way. MORE DEER PERMITS.
