Installed my Trd rear sway bar today. It's pretty wet up here in Mass today so I haven't gone too crazy testing it out, but corners much flatter and just feels tighter over all.

Yes, the rear sway bay can make a dramatic difference in handling.
IMO, it gives you the most bang for the buck than any other thing you can do for your suspension . .

And those big rigs won't blow you off the highway any longer.
Soooo much more relaxing.

Update: Day two with the sway bar. I swear it's like driving a different car. Corners flat, and just over all more stable. I highly recommend this mode.

Too bad when I checked with the local Toyota dealer they said the TRD rear sway bar is not available in Canada.

Thanks .. though I am trying to find something in Canada, as shipping across the border is less than desirable, especially when shipping UPS. But I am in no hurry to make a purchase.

Plan to get one installed before the winter . The rear of the sedan seems a bit squirmy when driving on snow covered roads . Hopefully that'll help with stability . Use Blizzak WS 70s in winter .

Thanks .. do you know anyplace in Canada that sells them (like the TRD model) ? But if need be I will order from Micro Image. I just hate the whole shipping thing across the border, but I imagine they will be accommodating.

Fed Ex and USPS are not that bad. But UPS is another story.

I am going to try to get the part from Toyota Canada out of Vancouver. That price should probably be lower than having to get it from the US and paying for shipping.

Just cause this item is bulky and difficult to ship. I am going to try to get the part from Canada first .. as I am sure you can appreciate.

Had you looked into a better sway? like the WhiteLine? They may have a dealer in Canada.

Will get it through a TOYOTA dealer . Certain dealers have coupons ( download and print ) that discount parts . Some up to 20% . Look under parts department of TOYOTA dealer sites . Some charge more than others for the sway bar and install , so shop around . May be able to get one to match other dealer . Cheapest I found was a little under $220 for part and install . Not that pricey .

If Hershey is in Canada, a local source will probably be cheaper. My post was to send one to enviri after he sends his to.... and so on...

I can deal with $220 for part and installation. If it helps the handling . Then worth it .

No I don't get into Boston much ( By choice ). I have tested it on a few curvy roads out in the burbs though:tongue:

There's other manufacturers besides TRD, such as Tanabe or Whiteline as mentioned. Maybe you can find a way to get the bar brought to you? Drive down?

I installed the Whiteline rear bar on my 2013 Yaris today, and agree with all the other posts - it's like a completely different car! Good old Aussie product!

The installation instructions are sparse (and that's being generous). Getting the long bolt through the shock mount was a bit of a challenge. I initially thought the instructions were wrong/obsolete/generic, and put the first bolt through from the inside to the outside. Then I realised that the threaded part of the bolt would be inside the shock mounting bush, and could chew the bush, or have other problems.

The approach which worked for me was to pull the shock out of the lower mount, put the bolt through, then pull the bolt straight back until the head entered a depression in the brake backing plate. At this point the tip of the bolt was just poking through the shock mount, and the shock could be pushed back in. Then, a jack to lift the shock a tiny bit, wiggle the bolt in a bit, lift the shock mount, wiggle bolt, repeat.

So, even though on first inspection it may appear that it's impossible to get the long bolt in from the outside, it is doable, although very fiddly.

But, if anyone is wondering whether to add a rear anti-sway bar, my vote is enthusiastically YES!

Tomorrow I take the Yaris on the freeway, and hopefully will no longer get blown about by the trucks swishing past :)

Cheers,
Andrew

Awesome, congrats on a successful install! Do you have it set on soft (21mm equivalent) or stiff (23mm equivalent)?

The installation instructions are sparse (and that's being generous).

For anyone else doing it, we provide a DIY tutorial, and I'm pretty sure there's one on here too.

Putting a jack under the shock lower mount to line up the holes allows you to slip the bolt in and out without much of a problem.

Have to disagree, at least in my case. I was seriously thinking of cutting or grinding 2 or 3 mm off the end of the bolt, because it really looked impossible without removing the brake backing plate. Hence taking the time to post my experience...

When I check the install post-freeway drive, I'll take some measurements of the bolt length, abd gap between shock mount and backing plate - maybe something's changed on 2013 models?

Cheers,
Andrew

I did 200 km to work and back today, with the rear sway bar on the soft setting, and I'm still excited at the improvement!

The run to work was in blowy, gusty weather, and I was no longer correcting the steering to keep the Yaris in my own lane. I could still feel the buffeting, but it wasn't moving the car around.

I sat beside a truck and trailer, and again found the car comfortably stable, unlike in standard form. Why don't Toyota put a rear bar on as standard ???

I also measured the supplied long mounting bolt - 110 mm, and the gap between the shock mount and brake backing plate - 100.5 mm.
No wonder I had dramas! There is an indentation in the backing plate, but no way is it 10 mm deep!

My dad's getting an identical Yaris next week, so if he decides to get the same sway bar, and there's the same fitting challenge, I'll take pics/vids to demonstrate.

Cheers,
Andrew

maybe something's changed on 2013 models?

On the Prius C, we ran the bolt from the inside out instead, it wouldn't go at all from the outside. I don't know if the C is set up more like the 12+ Yaris or not, but I think so.

I'll get a 2012+ to drive by so we can check it out. Sounds like the Prius C set up to me.

I have a TRD one from Garm on my sedan. It makes a huge difference and is really easy to install.

Does anyone know if a rear sway bar can be installed on a 2002 Echo. Ive watched videos on the install on a Yaris and when looking at the rear suspension of my echo it doesn't have the same mounting locations. It honestly looks as if the only mounting location is the bottom of the rear strut there doesn't seem to be the mounting location forward of the strut as in the videos I have seen.

Thanks

We have a Whiteline sway bar made for your car. It only requires the lower shock bolt location, and uses U bolts to attach to the beam rear axle.

I've copied it over to the Echo product page, it has a slightly different part number than the Yaris one. You should find it there now. I have two in stock.

Thanks again Cali.

I watched your install video. So you figure if you didnt raise the axle beam the bracket would have fit without grinding it down?

cali yaris

^ That was on the Yaris, and yes, probably because I'm using the alternate set of holes.

Did not see this problem at all on our Prius C install, and you probably won't on your Echo. But do take a look when you do your install.
