After months of consideration and shopping around,today I finally upgraded from a 1995 Nissan Pulsar(N14) 1.6L (with 216000km) to a 2007 Toyota Vitz 1.3L (with 60,000km).

After walking out of the dealer's yard, I felt good and thought it would be the beginning of a long happy relationship, I was wrong.

About 1km away from the dealer, when I accelerated, the engine started vibrating and clunking to a point it felt like the engine might just suddenly die. Earlier in the day, when I test drove the car, this was not present.

I immediately drove it back to the dealer. He hopped into the car, drove around in it with me and agreed there was something wrong with the car.

He reckons it was from the spark plugs getting wet when he cleaned the engine bay in the afternoon. He's agreed to get the car to a mechanic on Monday.

Any thoughts?

Has this happened to anyone?

I feel so gutted at the moment.

Does New Zealand have any buyers remorse protection laws?

Chances are that it is simply a case of something getting wet that should not have. The ECM (engine computer) for example has a small vent on the back side of it that could let water in if you sprayed water behind it.

Thank you for your responses.

Yes, New Zealand does have buyer remorse protection laws. It basically states that if the fault is minor, the car dealer has a duty to repair or replace but if the fault is serious, the consumer will have the choice of either seeking a refund, replacement or accepting a repair.

Consumers Guarantees act for Motor Vehicle Dealers (http://www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/for-business/by-business-type/motor-vehicle-traders-1/consumer-guarantees-act-for-motor-vehicle-traders)

I am contemplating a refund rather than a repair.

First and foremost, sorry to hear that dude, truly am. I was also in your position but thankfully I bought the car Certified Used from Toyota and they put a sh*t ton of work into the car free of charge, and I'm keeping a close eye on anything else potentially gone wrong.

If you bought the car from a used car lot I would be especially leery of it. If the car turns out OK, cool. But if it turns out to be a major problem I would say back out of the deal immediately and get your money back if possible. I'm dealing with a Toyota Dealer and still having a hard time getting shit done, I can't imagine what a second hand dealer would be luck.

Best of luck and keep us posted

Thanks for this. As a fellow Kiwi Im keen to hear about what happened.

Also just upgraded to a new Vitz. Seems there are plenty of them coming into the country from Japan lately. Was yours an import?

I understand why people want a clean engine bay, but I've seen a HUGE number of threads here and over at infamousnissan where people have done hundreds of dollars in damage from trying to clean things.

I hope it all works out for you.

Thanks everyone for their response!

It turns out the issue with the vehicle was with a faulty ignition coil. While that was replaced, the dealer also had the spark plugs replaced as per Toyota specification (Denso ones).

After the replacement, I took the vehicle to Toyota for a second opinion and they could not find any other faults with it but found an error code for a faulty ignition code and cleared it.

Since that incident, I have enjoyed nothing but trouble free motoring!

why?
