more performace/MPG with cat delete?

Friend of mine told me I should take my car to a muffler/welding shop and tell them to cut out the cat and replace with a pipe of same diameter for better performance and MPG. He did and it only cost him $30.

True or Myth? :)

I think this was true with the old 70s cats and whatnot, but I don't think it makes much of a difference anymore.
