View Full Version : When to shift

Hello Everone,
I'm bringing up a topic already discussed in this post, http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5979.
It says to never let the RPMs rise over 2k or 2.2 for merging. As some of you know I'm new to yaris and I'm new to the manual world. So my shifting is really crappy, and not smooth. I usually shift at 2.5k because I kind of let the RPMs drop trying to find the catch point between shifts. Should I try the 2k shifting?

If you want to save fuel, sure. If you want to get where you're going, shift based on the current driving conditions, terrain and when you feel like it.
I used to shift at 2k for the fuel savings but it tends to put you around 1200rpms at the next gear. that is alright as long as you don't have to accelerate quickly.
The yaris also reacts well to shifting around 5500rpms and it is a lot more fun...

i shift at 4000 all day everyday...

When I was in ECO driving mentality I would do the whole shifting around 2k-2200, but really I find the best spot for smooth shifting being at the following which you might want to try until you are more comfortable:
4k, 5k, 5800
shifting I have noticed between 2500-4k seems to be more blunt.

Just keep driving and do what feels right for you. You will get the feel for when to shift depending on power needs and the situation. Everyone drives a manual differently. There isn't really a set way you need to shift. Enjoy the drive!!!
Back in the day, there used to be a little light (arrow pointing up) to tell you when to shift. I found out quickly that if you floor it, the light goes off...

I don't think shifting at 2000 rpm gives the best mileage, and it usually bogs the motor if you're trying to accelerate. At least 3000 rpm will make the car a lot happier.

I used to shift at 2k rpm when ever I was able to creep up in speed. But since getting heavier wheels, I'm now shifting between 2.5k and 3k.

do what feels right for you.
depending on power needs and the situation.
My Yaris doesn't have a tach. I pretty much follow this ^^^^^.

I've made some spreadsheets and charts to figure out speed vs rpm (before I had a tach). Here's a post that has the stock gears vs their redline shift speeds: http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showpost.php?p=634853&postcount=9

New manual transmission corvettes lock out gears 2 and 3 when in eco mode. This forces you to go from first to fourth.
Some GM engineer thinks it is best to do most of your acceleration in first and then maintain speed with the higher gears.
FYI...after the fourth gear shift has been done, you are allowed to downshift to second or third.

^ That's the goofiest thing ever. Who would want to hypermile a Corvette?

Somebody that builds corvettes. .....That doesn't want to get hit with gas guzzler taxes.... that doesn't want to take a big hit on their CAFE average....GM.

100% true for me at least... tried doing the 2000rpm-for-"best"-economy and didn't get the world's best results... but at around 3000-3200rpm I'm good to go!
Fuelly lists my last 10 fill-up average at 39.7mpg, and that's with consistent 3k shifts!

Yup, each car is different. When I drove BailOut's LB, he told me to drive 55 mph in it since that's where he got the best mpg. Then I applied it to my car for almost a year, and got fed up with the not so great mpg I was getting. So I started experimenting and found that going 60-75 mph (just keeping the throttle at 24%) produced the best mpg for my car. hahaha. Last tank for me was 39.4 mpg with mostly city driving and I kid you not, 95% of all stop lights I encountered turning red on me last second. Also, with having to rotate 43.5 lbs in each corner. HAHA

 Thanks. Interesting info.

you have to experiment to find what works best for you, your location, etc.
Myself, in So Cal, I shift 1st to 2nd at about 3k, and 2500 for the rest of them. I'm getting 41 mpg (cruise freeway at 60mph when it's clear, 65 when moderate traffic) and it doesn't feel slow shifting at that range.

I shift at about 2,000 rpm for all shifts. Where I live, I rarely have the need to accelerate in any meaningful way. My last tank was 45.2mpg, with approximately 60% highway, 40% city.

I shift first at about 2.7k but I can't figure out why the car seems to be needing more power... I'm confused and don't know if I'm letting the clutch out too quickly or if I'm shifting too slowly. I guess time will tell.

That has more to do with the power curve of the engine. The 1NZ doesn't have much oomph below 2k, but gets a nice torque bump around 4k. The only way to hit the power band in second gear is to wind it up to 5.5k in first and shift fast--otherwise the engine will feel like it's bogging down when you mash the pedal.
Tooter was kind enough to document multiple pulls (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showpost.php?p=685328&postcount=13) when he was installing his custom intake. Horsepower is the one that's almost a straight line up and to the right, torque is the other one.

I don't have a tach on my liftback but I shift really early. You want to shift late enough that you're not lugging the motor but you'd like to shift early enough that you're not just high revving the motor. This will also be heavily dependent on the level of incline or decline.
