Lately it seems like my starter stays engaged longer.. almost too long.
Seems like it is staying engaged even after the motor turns over..
I have found out the key does not control the amount of time the starter turns.. so I cant tell if the motor really is started before cranking stops or not :bonk:
Sticking starter?? ECM telling to crank too long??
Anybody ever have anything like this?

The engine should wind the starter pinion back. If the armature is bent or the pinion is sticking it will cause the problem you describe. Only way to find out is to remove the starter and check for the above.

So the force of the engine is what determines when the starter disengages?
Cuz that's exactly what it sounds like.. like the engine is forcing the starter gear out of the flywheel. But it didnt do this before.. I thought there was something else controling disengage.. like crank/RPM sensor :iono:
What if the engine doesnt start? Perma-crank?

Seemed to have worked it out!! Went to this post: http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40811
Have tried starting car this "new" way and it seems to have worked!!! Stoked. Thought my starter motor needed a overhaul..
