Hi all

Everytime I turn on the AC, that horrible squealing noise comes on. And just recently (after starting the car in the morning), the same thing happens but without the AC on.

But whilst I'm driving, the noise seems to go away. Is it a loose fan belt or do I need a new one ? - if it does need tightening, can I do it myself ? - please bear in mind I'm a complete novice.

Also, what are the repercussions of driving with a belt that needs looking into ? - is it dangerous ? - will it damage any major parts ?

It's a 2001 Yaris CDX btw, and not sure if the belt is original or whether it's been replaced in the past.

Thanks in advance

It is indeed a loose or worn belt. Once you run it loose for a bit it gets "glazed" on the contact surface and at that point no matter how much you tighten it it will squeal at least at startup.

The Yaris belt is under $20 US and it quite easy to replace, so your best bet is to do so.

Thanks Scott. And what if I preferred to tighten it rather than get a new one ? - is there a vid or diagram to show this ?

I agree 100% with C. T. Scott. If the belt is glazed it is scrap. Fit a quality new one and clean each pulley carefully. Tension correctly, no more squeal.
