View Full Version : Contest - Guess the Weight of a Bare Yaris Shell

CTScott
09-03-2013, 04:05 PM
Let's see who can guess the weight of a completely empty Yaris shell (to the nearest lb). When I weighed it every single item that could be unbolted or pulled off/out was removed.

If no one gets it prior, I will post the answer on Friday.

P.S. One guess per person!

And, the winner is edmscan, who's guess of 520 lbs was only 4 lbs off the actual weight of 524 lbs

I hadn't noticed that before. It does look like some kind of a prehistoric elephant skull.

Nope on the 768.

LOL.....just think though.....I, for one, know quite a bit more about my car (even given other reading on my own) from CTScott's posts than I otherwise would have.

It really is a shame, but the front frame damage, would have resulted in some mighty costly time on a frame machine. I was considering trying to sell the whole rear clip, but found out that there is zero market for it, since the Yaris is too inexpensive of a car to warrant the labor associated with swapping a clip. So, I removed everything usable and the rest of the body will be off to a scrap metal recycler for $.06 per lb.

That's what makes it interesting. It's one of those things that is very difficult to calculate and therefor fun to take wild guesses at.

And the actual retail price (err weight) is 524 lbs.

edmscan was the closest (guessing 520 lbs).

I was pretty amazed as to how light the Yaris shell is. When you look at the curb weight of this car (2290 lbs MT / 2335 lbs AT) it is pretty amazing that the shell is less than 1/4 of that weight.

I will be posting another thread with detailed pictures of the cut sections to show the details of the construction.

Ironically at $0.06 per lb for scrap steel, it cost me more for sawsall blades and angle grinder cutting discs than I will make off the scrap steel. But, it was all worth it to have the opportunity to see how these cars are assembled.

Wow that is surprisingly light! This was an awesome thread.

Edit: Just looked up the weight of my '91 Miata shell for fun, 466 lbs.

My car sits at 1850lbs with an 8-point cage in it. I think you could have a "streetable" car without the cage around 2000lbs.

Our cars are so light, they won't even bust a water/soda plastic bottle that's capped on the road. I've tried driving over them when people leave them in the road. My car drives right over.
