I needed to change my oil. (10K miles) I had 2 qts of Amsoil 0W-30, 1 qt of Mobil-1 0W-30, and 1/2 qt of Mobil-1 5W-30 laying around. I used a Napa Gold filter and in went the oils. It seems to run just fine, but I wanted some input from y'all on this. The 5W-30 was about 4 years old but was kept inside my house.
BTW - I overheard the Napa guy tell a customer to wait 'til you get 30K miles, then switch to synthetic oil, but you can never go back to conventional after that. LMAO! I wanted to ask him some more questions about synthetic oils but I was in a hurry. My brother was with me, being an ex-mechanic he was interested as well in what BS this guy was spreading on the subject. Where do they dream this stuff up?

As long as we're talkin about oil. I'm comin up on my first oil change as well. I don't even know what the Yaris takes now that I think about it. What would be a good "performance" synthetic oil?

I would go Amsoil Series 2000 0W-30. Same Price and protects just as well.
No one game for a Synthetic Cocktail? Anyone ever tried it before. I don't think the additives should work against each other. I hope not anyway.

hahaha, i dont know what those numbers all mean, but either one is a good choice! i really dont think mixing those oils will cause any damage in the short or long run. we all live under a budget, and we use what we can. if we werent on a budget, we wouldnt be driving the yaris! amsoil states that you can even mix their oils with conventional oils, so your mixture with other synths and synth blends should be just fine. its not like you're mixing 5w-30 with 10w-50 (totally different viscosities)!! now that would be cause for concern...

I hate it when people post with their sales BS instead of answering the original poster's question....to answer his question, NO the cocktaile you wrote of will not harm your engine.
To the Amsoil guys, could you please keep your commercial posts down to a minimum...otherwise I will complain to the web owners...and STAY ON TOPIC please!

Yeah, I am being a cheapskate. I had a little worry that something would go weird on my oil by mixing competing brands. Mainly worrying about additives doing weird stuff when combined, but like someone said earlier, if you can mix it with conventionals, I should be OK. The Mobil-1 5W-30 was the old formula. Maybe a synergistic effect will occur in wich I will achieve 200WHP and get 98MPG. Oh well, wishful thinking...

Mobil SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic is the way to go. A little over 4 bucks at Walmart. I'd buy the OEM Toyota filters on Ebay - 40 bucks for a case of 10. At 4 bucks a filter, thats half the cost of the dealer.

How do you guys change your own oils? :iono:
Don't you need a machine that pulls your car up, so you can get under the car and change the oil?

The last time I mixed oil weights in a car, it was blowing smoke out the exhaust pipe until I changed it. I also suffered a number of driveability issues. I would advise not mixing weights. I'm sure it's fine for temporary use, but for long term I would use only corresponding weights.
As far as I knew, it was fairly common knowledge that AMSOIL produced performance fluids for cars - most notably their oil. This answers the question posed in the second post. Look at you guys; arguing and flaming over motor oil. Pathetic.
Soner: The machine that pulls your car up is called a lift. Those will usually run you a couple of thousand dollars for a cheap one. You can go ahead and get one if you like; they are very useful. I personally use a set of ramps; you can also use a carjack and jackstands, all readily available at your local auto parts store for significantly cheaper than the lift(under $60 for a good set?). They all accomplish basically the same thing. The service manual describes the steps required to change your own oil. The filter and drain plug look basically the same on every car, so I'm sure most of the helpful knowledgeable individuals posting in this thread don't rely on the manual. Hope this helps.

nope just creep underneath get the drain plugs out ' u may need a jack ..of course take the engine filler cap off first then the most important thing is "drain"..then change oil filter.., put plugs back in fill oil 5w-30 for canada. wala!!!!! you should get this done in under ten minutes including clean up. :w00t:

companyxpaladin and marcus thank you for your responses.
I like your sarcastic style paladin :) "You can go ahead and get one if you like; they are very useful."
I will look into the autoshops for jackstands b/c I don't want to pay $50 for synthetic oil change everytime. Plus even if I paid $50, I don't even trust mechanics will put expensive synthetic oil anyways... They will probably put cheap oil anyways b/c not many people can tell the difference.
I have no trust for mechanics. I have my own share of experience with them!

As far as oil goes, I've used every brand of 5W-30 syntethic oil out there From Toyota to Mobil1 to Wal-Mart Super Tech. With my car doing 155,000 miles, I've done 30 oil changes @ 5000 miles and each oil change, I use one Toyota oil filter, 3qts of Wal-Mart Super Tech 5W-30 oil and 1qt of oil stabilizer. And my car idles and run as smooth as the first day I bought it.

lmao....I made the mistake of using my ramps when it was raining...my tires gripped them too well, and slid one underneath my civic and left a nice dent in the stop at the top of the ramp...from the rail...
oh and no harm done on the 'cocktail' its like mixing 2 flavors of gatorade powder together....it may look different, taste different, but it's still gatorade...

Hey, I sell Amsoil! Anyway. 5W30 is a great spring/summer/fall oil to use. In the winter I suggest 0W30 as it flows better in colder temps. I use Amsoil (obviously) in all my vehicles. The one that surprised me the most was my G6, which netted +2.1mpg overall from changing both the engine oil and tranny fluid. Great products.
