Hi, what is the maximum wheel width I can safely use to mount the factory 175/65R15 tire?
Is 15x6.5 too wide?

You would have to check the specs for the actual tires, but typically 175s are rated by the tire manufacturers for 4.5" to 6" rims.

get a wider wheel and a wider 185/60 15 tire .. yaris comes in stock with this size so there would be no worries for you

My 2013 LE from Canada comes with 175/65 15 tires on steel wheels.
Well, my winter tires are 185/60 15, so maybe I will put the alloys in the winter tires then. Kinda stupid, but looks like that's the only way to go unless I go find some OEM toyota 15x6 alloys.

You can easily run 175's on a 6.5" wheel width. It will stretch a little, but it will work just fine.
I am running 205/40 on 10" wide wheels so if we assume your brand tire stretches as well as mine, then we could assume via a proportion that a 216.829mm wide wheel would fit which converts to 8.537" wide. So 6.5" should fit in there no problem.
