Would be cool if they actually do it. Not that we would get it here anyway.

You know. I really hope they follow thru with this. I mean, a Mini Cooper awd and fiesta awd... I don't see why the yaris could not be a good platform to convert to awd for WRC.

Not the same trim level as they will do for WRC.

I dont even care if they never make a production awd yaris. I just wanna see it compete with evo, fiesta, wrx and Citroen. I hope Loeb signs on driving it. That would be epic. Highly unlikely, but awesome

I have a friend who's rallying the B-spec Yaris in the US. UP in Canada we just won the 2wd overall at the Big White winter rally last weekend against Porsche, Saab, VW's, Fords, ae86's, Celica's and a gaggle of Subaru's that had some problems like Max Riddle.
What was the car? A production stock engine 1nzfe Yaris ncp91. Who Co-drove/Navigated? Ex Team Subaru rally Navigator and Verena Mei's current Co-driver Leanne Junnila. Who drove? a 73 year old man named Taisto Heinonen who's old rally Corolla is sitting in a museum in Finland. He was the Toyota Team Rally driver in the 80's who competed against Buffum and Millen for North American championship points. At this rally they came 6th overall. Quite a feat considering this car was stock. There maybe rumours about a cool Yaris rally car for 2014, but you might have to come to Canada to check it out. Or maybe we'll be down in the US for the Olympus/nameless rally for some fun.

I would not call that set in stone... Notice the date on that story is the same as my original post and news feed, and its essentially word for word the same release. Rerunning old news is not a conformation.

I would imagine if it happened at all it would be along with the next Yaris update.

Only one year. With the lack of manufacturers I am sure they would forget about an past indiscretion just to get another car out there.

I'm not so sure, Toyota has been moving away from that kind of engine development, and moving towards hybrid drivetrains for their smaller gas vehicles, and leasing diesel drivetrains from other oems for their international diesel cars.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say in 10 years unless Toyota radically changes itself its newer engine options are either going to be hybrid or eol gas engines.

Diesel seems like a long shot, at least here in the States. Most of the people there that I have talked to realize (outside of the freaks that think you need a crew cab dully diesel to tow 500lbs, and misguide tree-huggers) understand the break even point for a diesel is beyond the period of time most people keep cars - in most cases its worse than the break even on a hybrid.

Outside of more hybrids, the inevitable direct injection and Valvematic, I doubt there will be much change.

xnamerxx

By diesel I mean sub 2.5l passenger car engines for Europe, where the diesel prices are more favorable than here. Trucks are a different conversation, since the US is a bit unique in that aspect.

I believe currently Toyota uses BMW and AVM for their current engines, but are going to be switching to Mazda pretty soon at least for the sub 2l category. It completely makes sense to me as to why Toyota doesn't develop diesel engines, since only 1 market uses them and they can get a much better return on their investment by using hybrid drivetrains.

But I your likely correct, DI and valvematic engines will probably start popping up soon along with newer hybrid engines for the more popular vehicles.

I think the issue of that Toyota doesn't have any Atkinson cycle larger displacement engines, and using an electric assist motor would require them to lease less efficient technology from another mfg. That and I don't think the existing CVT transmissions are durable enough. I'm sure they've been working on something though.

After 2010 the engine regulations changed. Previously you could have a 2.0L turbo charged engine, for 2011 and up they adopted the S2000 spec (no, not the Honda) for engines, this limited cars to 1.6L with turbo. Since most cars fitted with these small motors seem to be B segment cars its only fitting this is what you see being raced.

In keeping with the regulations, it looks like Toyota will be selling at least 2500 rally-spec versions of the Yaris. There's speculation that this new rally-spec Yaris will be powered by the Lexus 200t model's, 8AR-FTS engine. (2.0L turbo with direct injection - 175KW/235HP)

They dont have to build homologation cars for WRC S2000, that car was never going to happen, the current road going version of the Auris was enough to qualify them.

I would put my money on a Toyota iM rally car.
