I live around neighbors that I don't trust. Is there anything that can be done to prevent my car from getting keyed ?

You could hide an IR-camera-capable raspberry-pi nearby**. It won't prevent any scratches (is there anything that would?), but at least you have a good chance at catching them in the act and having a snapshot and/or recording of it as a bonus.
There are some cool video analysis software libraries out there (ie. OpenCV) that can monitor a live feed and react to motion events (such as recording that particular segment to the sd card). A $25 raspberry pi is perfect for this kind of project, along with a $25 camera attachment plus a few extra parts to make it weather resistant/proof.
Found this rather nice example of what I mean:
http://designspark.com/eng/blog/nocturnal-wildlife-watching-with-pi-noir
Hey, at least it would make for a cool weekend project.
That is, if you have a spare $100 bucks and like geeking out on stuff such as this.

Either garage the car or strongly consider moving.
Moving can be a tough chore, but why be uncomfortable
where you are living? :iono:

I like the Raspberry Pi idea. We are considering to move, nothing like this goes quick, especially a move. We have a whole parking dilemma going on where I live due to a bad ICE Storm the past week.

Not to mention that moving doesn't guarantee that your future neighbors won't be assholes as well.

True. My parking is included in the rent, but the tenant below me feel during this problem, they have parked directly beside the entrance / exit of the apartment since the parking area is filled with huge tree branches due to the ICE storm and I'm forced to park in another areas private property because she wants to come and go as she pleases and my landlord was suppose to clean up the mess on the weekend and never did so we could have our own parking space, there is more but I'll trail off topic :)
That will come to a halt tomorrow if the mess is not cleaned up. I'll have to block her car, no other choice !
If she scratches my Yaris because of anger, I will have to sue her pay for a whole new paint Job. It seems you can't have anything 'new' for long anymore, when I'm angry I let it out without damaging peoples stuff, it's a shame that there are many who only know to damage other peoples stuff.
2 weeks after I got my 2013 Wrx someone put a 2 inch door ding into it so I feel you. I was sitting in my Yaris as well and someone opened the door on my car. I dont like being a nasty person but dam where did everyones manners go. Its tiresome to check everyone left and right sometimes I just want to chill. Thats like when all the bad stuff happens lol. So at least your not the only one hope it works out for the better for ya.

And the easiest way to live with it, is to not care.
Paint...is just the surface. Cars start out new and shiny; and end up dull and scratched and dented. Along the way they have lots of help.
Accept what you cannot change. When and if you move, you can get the car repainted. Until then...unless they really smash it, it'll drive as well.

I had an argument on New Years Eve with the tenants below me. Apparently they wanted the parking space that my car is parked in due to the fact the actual parking area still has huge broken trees and the landlords fail to clean it up. She wanted the parking space back, she harassed us, tell us that we have to be fair, my mother who was with me at the time, told her she has to be fair too, she didn't like my mothers position and was calling her rude etc. I had to calm things down, it was reaching a point whereas the other women who is probably in her late 20's to early 30's was going to start a fight with my mother. I'm still worried about the Yaris, don't quite trust them, our landlords have real bad issues, combined with tenants who want to start fights, yeah one would worry.

That's why the Yanks originally stipulated a RIGHT to KEEP and BEAR ARMS.
Because an armed society is a polite society (Robert Heinlein).
Since you don't have that option; and your neighbors are less than polite...your choice is twofold. Move to a better neighborhood; or buy a beater car they can key and kick and even set fire to, with minimum loss to you.

Do the neighborhood a favor - and set fire to it.
They're not armed, either.

You base that assertion on, what?
I can tell you Heinlein's reasoning, which was proven in the American West frontier as in other places. When you have reason to believe a stranger may be armed - you do not push your advantage. Not if you're Mayor. Not if you're the gang that controls the town. Not if the guy you meet looks like Justin Bieber.
YOU WATCH YOUR STEP.
Criminals will always have arms - no matter the law. That's what criminals DO - violate laws.
The presence of LAW ABIDING ARMED PERSONS deters crime and criminals. And even sometimes dispatches a few perpetrators.
In Australia, violent crime and homicide ROSE after firearms bans. Which also mirrors American States' experience with firearms prohibitions.

When the Second Amendment was enacted, we were long removed from any shooting with the British. The Authors recognized that ANY government could get as King George's government got - and history, before and since, proves them correct.

I'm female and armed with a Glock 9mm.
A friend of mine (with a female friend of hers) rented a two story townhouse in an upscale, low crime Seattle suburb. One night, they heard someone using something mounted on the side of the residence to aid in trying to climb to the second floor. They managed to scare off the potential intruder. The next day my friend started the ball rolling (instruction, and whatever else was required), and eventually was carrying a Glock 9mm.

He's Canadian. Many U.S. citizens can't imagine having 'Peace, Order, and Good Government' (POGG) enshrined in our constitution any more than some Canadians can imagine having our 2nd Amendment in their constitution. However, see link below from a newspaper in Canada. The author has a less than rosy view of POGG.

I wanted to add, the neighbors had a ICE Tree branch destroy there window, now one would think you would get it repaired.
Instead they bought a brand new Hyundai Sonata, I don't know if it's a lease or they signed on to one of Hyundai do-not-pay-for-85-yrs contracts. Window destroyed, don't fix it, buy a new car. There former car was a Yaris 07/08.

Since there are trees around where I live, there is literally a 'car fight' going on. They own (2) cars, now the snow plows can't clean up tonight because they blocked the drive way to clean the parking area with there second car, when then saw me move the car to a drive way beside where we live, instead of doing the same, they blocked the drive way, no snow plow can clean, the reason being, they want the same parking space so by blocking when this so called storm is over, they can just drive back and park. There a couple with a child, but in all honestly they are copy cats and somewhat trouble makers.
I was shocked when I saw a new car in the drive way, I couldn't believe it, they just got a new Kia roughly 2 yrs ago, now they go for a second new car because of a window. If I move my Yaris, they move their Kia, why I say 'car fight'.

Why doesn't the landlord call (or have the snow plowing people call) a tow truck? Is he or she that freaked out that the people might move out and an apartment would be vacant with no rent coming in? Or are the neighbors technically not violating the lease with their activities?

Our landlord had a high paying career Job and lost it due to substance abuse, now her Job his to manage this place, very poorly.

I don't use Google (1. IMO, Eric Schmidt's statement "If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, then maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place" to Maria Bartiromo on CNBC is THE MOST ARROGANT statement ever uttered in the U.S. by the CEO of a publicly traded company...and...2. I don't want to utilize a service provided by a company that is so Orwellian that they store EVERY search EVER performed when there are alternatives that are at the other end of the spectrum). I did, however, do the search you mentioned on DuckDuckGo (which has seen a HUGE increase in traffic since Snowden's revelations...I started using it LONG before that) and read some of the hits. Almost all of the people I've encountered in Canada have been extremely nice people and your country is breathtakingly beautiful, but If I had to live (reside in rather than visit) under these laws your Supreme Court upheld in 2013 I think I would scream (and I think many very patriotic Americans would agree with me). I think this is feelings centered leftism run amok. Cameron, Sarkozy, Merkel, Aznar, and Howard have all, probably reluctantly, expressed the sentiment that Multiculturalism does not work. I think Houston is an example where assimilation seems to be more prevalent than other places I've been in the United States, and yet the flavor and wonderful authenticity of each community doesn't seem to be compromised. Houston also, fairly recently, became the most ethnically diverse metro area in the U.S. (passing New York and the S.F. Bay Area), which I think is fantastic. I also, of course, respect that this (hate speech policy as codified) is the course that Canadian citizens choose and support. If the U.S. Code ever changes to reflect a similar policy, I'd be motivated to attempt to find another country to live in (I may do that anyway if "Mrs. What difference, at this point, does it make?" gets elected POTUS in 2016).

Mostly you live around people but you don't really care to know them. I pay for my space which I rent out, and what I pay for is mine, that's all there is to it :) And with that I deserve my privacy and human respect, don't say hello, but respect my space. If I want to let you in, communication and body language will clearly demonstrate that, which goes for anyone.

Directly in front of us was (IIRC re type of car) a new SUV parked with the person doing what you mention in your post. He was also, obviously drunk and was damaging the other two cars quite a bit. The light changed right as he finally got out of the space. We started following him and my girlfriend attempted to contact the police. He knew we were following him and sped up (breaking the law again) so we gave up. Perhaps even more appalling than what happened with the two other cars, and what may have happened after we gave up, was the yawning indifference of SFPD re the phone call .
