Found rare Toyota Japan made oil filters

These Japan made filters are installed at the factory. As you can see they are quite different internally. If you did your first oil change yourself, you would have seen the orange rubber filter.
Most interesting thing is they are repackaged as GM parts!

They are definitely rare, as Toyota replaced 90915-10003 with 90915-YZZF2. The Matrix (Pontiac Vibe) used the same filter, so that is probably where the GM label comes into play.

I was thinking more the Geo version of the corolla myself. I scored 2 on eBay for $24. Expensive but I just had to have em!

Outer box: made in Japan.
Inner box: made in Taiwan.
Oil filter: made in Japan.

Woah... that must mean that the inner filter membrane was made in Taiwan. :wink:

That seems to be where Japanese industry "outsources" jobs for products for Japanese consumption. And to some extent, world markets.

I'm not seeing something here. Is there some reason a Japanese-made filter would be more desirable? Different construction and packaging, sure. But if it's made directly for the parent company to their tight specifications...it all should be good.

Novelty interest? Okay, sure. Seems a bit esoteric, though. Like oddly-stamped connecting rods or other hidden part...

Construction seems much more robust and intricate to me. Completely different internals.

The Japanese one seems a little more solid than the Thai one, can you snap a better pic of the internals of the Thai one though? It looks like the filter media can get a lot more flow through it?

I like the FRAM filters with the black grippy surface. That way I dont need an oil filter wrench when I change the oil. About $4 at Walmart.

Im not sure cars even need oil filters. The engine of my 1974 VW Beetle went 250,000 miles on the internal components. It needed a valve job at 125,000 miles but that doesnt have much to do with oil. I changed the pistons and cylinders too at 125k but I could have just put in rings.

$88 for 4 cylinders and pistons.

They were upgraded with fuel injection in the 2000's or something. The later 2003/2004 edition sports a MP3 cd player and AC. LOL

I am at a point where i don't really care about the oil filter. You may or may not be right about it, but for everyday use, it's all good. I tend to pick up FRAM filters over the cheaper Purolator filter.
But if i were racing my car, i'd probably get an AMSoil filter since i'm using AMSoil now.

1975 the Beetle got FI.

I changed the 2.5 qts of oil every 2k miles and I drove 30 miles to and from work and 250 miles each way twice a month to see my gf so it was all highway.
